Default Arithmancy Lesson 2: The Major Cycles

As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see the room set up as it always is: neat and exactly-positioned rows of wooden desks and chairs, the latter of which have cushions in a myriad of colors and textures to match your comfort and liking. The walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, on which rest a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference.

Professor Shackleton sits behind her desk at the front of the room in lilac-colored robes, her skin a bit pale and her hair pulled back off her face. Her head is resting against the back of the chair and her eyes are closed, though she is clearly not sleeping. She lifts her head and opens her eyes to greet each of you softly as you enter the room and gestures for you to take your seat.

Kyler caught on A bit after taking down notes. Turning the page, he wrote his calculations.

Quote:
First Cycle: o9= 9
Second Cycle: 2o= 2
Third Cycle: 2o49= 15- 1+5= 6
Then lower on the page he wrote down the meaning of these numbers.

Quote:
NINE (9) - A Cycle of Selfless Service and Reward:The 9 Major Cycle is an excellent time to develop compassion and tolerance, a fuller scope of humanity, and a genuine concern for the well-being of your fellow human.

TWO (2) - A Slow Cycle: With a 2 as your First or Second Major Cycle Number, this is a time of unhurried, patient development, where your innate gifts of gentle suggestion and peacemaking will often be employed. You are discovering how to be part of a team and cooperate with others - partnerships of any kind are important under the 2.

SIX (6) - A Cycle for Marriage, Family, and Responsibility: A 6 Major Cycle is a time for learning the lesson of codependence - to not subjugate your needs for another's and not go overboard with responsibilities. The matters of commitment, marriage, family, and responsibility all dominate under this Major Cycle.

Austin began to write his other major cycle numbers in his notebook.

Quote:
2nd Major Cycle
(2+2)
4

FOUR (4) - A Time of Putting Things in Order: For all three cycles, the 4 carries with it a time of hard wok and forming foundations for your life. Practical things of life (work, career, family, buying a home, building a solid community, etc.) will dominate this period of your life. Money matters most now as you try to secure a sound financial future.

3rd Major Cycle
(2+0+4+9)
(1+5)
(6)
SIX (6) - A Cycle for Marriage, Family, and Responsibility: A 6 Major Cycle is a time for learning the lesson of codependence - to not subjugate your needs for another's and not go overboard with responsibilities. The matters of commitment, marriage, family, and responsibility all dominate under this Major Cycle. When one is committed and can live with acceptance and respond lovingly, this is the cycle of joyful heart and home. If commitment cannot be made deeply or is broken, separation will be the emphasis of this cycle. This is also a time that accomodates starting a home or family-run business, especially one that is service oriented. Under this cycle new opportunities for self-expression are found too. You're learning the power and problem of responsibility. When the 6 is your Third Major Cycle Number, expect to be surrounded by family, content with your home and garden, and active in community service.

Professor Shackleton saw her students writing an awful lot, more than likely necessary for just the first Major Cycle. She assumed they had moved on to the Second and Third Major Cycles, so to get everyone in the same place Macadrian requested, "If you haven't already, please find your Second and Third Major Cycles as well and write the number as well as the interpretation in your journals. Remember if you have a Master Number in your Major Cycles, do not reduce it to a single digit." Professor Shackleton rested her head against the back of the chair, much the same way she appeared at the start of the lesson, breathing deeply and slowly.

Shayna scribbled into her journal furiously, flipping through her textbook whenever needed. At the beginning, the board had seemed only like a jumble of numbers, but when she looked over at it several times, she breathed out in relief. She'd skipped over the part about the Life Path number.

Quickly shuffling to the previous pages to refresh her memory on how to calculate her Life Path number, Shayna hummed along to an old ballad as she continued with her work, this wasn't so bad. Maybe she'd actually even begin to enjoy the subject this time. With frequent glances at the board, she was nearly done in next to no time.

Finishing writing her last line with a flourish, Shayna placed her quill into her ink pot, before leaning back to admire her work:

Quote:
Life Path: 08/04/2050
8 + [0+4] + [2+0+5+0]
8 + 4 + 7 = 19 => 1 + 9 = 10.
Wait a sec. The number 10 wasn't even listed on the board. With a groan, Shayna raised her slowly. 'Professor, I think I've a problem here.'

After finishing his work on his three major cycles, Austin looked up to see the Professor Shackleton. "Are you all right, professor?" Austin asked.

Kyler kept his gaze on the professor, she seemed like she was in pain. "Erm, are you alright?" He questioned, brow raised. Surely Shackleton shouldn't be teaching A class when sick. This wasn't good. "Maybe you should go to the hospital wing.."

Professor Shackleton raised her head seeing a hand raised, Professor Shackleton lifted herself out of the chair, using the arms of the chair as a brace. She approached Shayna's desk and looked over her work. She replied, "No problems at all. You've done the calculation correctly. Now you need to reduce it to a single digit. Ten reduces to one because it is one plus zero." Macadrian made a note on the girl's paper:

Quote:
10 = 1 + 0 = 1
She then concluded, "Your Life Path Number is 1 and from that you should be able to determine when your Major Cycle transitions will occur."

Professor Shackleton smiled weakly and replied, "Thank you both for your concern, but the hospital wing will not be necessary. I'm feeling a bit weak today, but the lesson will be concluding soon and I have every intention of resting all afternoon. So no worries. I'll be as good as new in no time."

With that said, Professor Shackleton glanced at her watch and explained, "Alright, I have one last request before I end this lesson. I would like you all to interpret the book's explanation of your First Major Cycle. This is the period in which you all reside at this moment, so determine how valid you think this assessment is, whether you feel you've already starting to experience these things or whether they may be coming in the latter half of your First Major Cycle. Maybe give some examples of where you see these lessons in action."

"I hope so," Kyler muttered. He was starting to like this class; getting easier after actually paying attention and all. But it wouldn't be any good with A sickly professor. With her explanation, which there really wasn't one, he nodded and turned back to his paper.

After reading his notes over, his hand flew into the air. "Do you want us to write what we think on paper and turn it in or what?" Now kyler pondered if they would be getting homework or not. For he would be busy and need to schedule A time to do it all. It was adding up too much with this band thing going on.

She had forgotten the interpretations... she flipped through the textbook. The professor seemed ill...

"You should write your opinions in your journals here in class. This is separate from the homework, which I will assign in just a few minutes. I will award three points to each person who gives their opinion in their journals of the textbook's explanation of their First Major Cycle Number."

After what Shackleton explained, A wide smirk spread on his face. "Sure, sure." He said casueally, reaching for the pencil and scribbled down words furiously.

Quote:
I do believe that the first cycle I have fits me. I do experience the Cycle of Selfless Service and Reward frequently. For example; I'd rather be with Whigalima than anything, for she is my girlfriend. And My father has beeen keeping some important things from me, and yet, I know I should be mad at him for doing this, But I dont. I know he does this for A reason, for my sake in fact, and I allow it. I might not understand it now, but it will come. I let go and dont bother to stress over it. For life moves on and there's no need to live in regrets.
His scribbling slowed down to A stop nd A massive writers cramp came. But he didn't care, he needed to finish all this work. After that full paragraph, he signed his name at the top and leaned back in his chair.

Professor Shackleton made her way slowly through the desks, making a note of the names of the students who did as she asked regarding the interpretations/opinions of the textbook's explanations so that she could award house points. Finally, she arrived back to the front of the room, where she drew her wand and wrote the homework assignment on the board:

Quote:
Arithmancy Homework #2
Due: Sunday, March 30th by 11:59pm EST
Worth 20 points

1. Using the Timing of Major Cycles Chart posted in class, determine the ages at which Harry James Potter's three Major Cycles would have started. (Birthday - July 31, 1980)

2. Calculate Harry Potter's Three Major Cycles and provide the textbook's explanation of those cycle numbers. Also give your opinion/interpretation of his First Major Cycle and how well it correlates with what we know about his younger years.

3. Using the Timing of Major Cycles Chart posted in class, determine the ages at which Tom Marvolo Riddle's three Major Cycles would have started. (Birthday - December 31, 1926)

4. Calculate Tom Riddle's Three Major Cycles and provide the textbook's explanation of those cycle numbers. Also give your opinion/interpretation of his Second Major Cycle and how well it correlates with what we know about his middle years.
She closed the class, "Once you've copied down the homework, you're free to go. Have a nice afternoon."

Cassandra read her first Cycle.

Marriage, Family, and Responsibility. Learning the lesson of co-dependence... Although now, marriage, family, and responsibility... those didn't seem as close as they had been... Alex had broken up with her after 5 years.

'If commitment cannot be made deeply or is broken, separation will be the emphasis of this cycle.' Yup... this was her at this very moment she thought reading it. 'Under this cycle new opportunities for self-expression are found too. You're learning the power and problem of responsibility.' This fit with her prefectiness... Yup, this was rather accurate.
