AJ smiled as she entered the room, but her expression was replaced with a mask of confusion as Professor Clark stood there instead of Ophelia. She nearly stopped moving for a second but shook her head slightly and made her way to a seat, not wanting to make a fuss about it. "Good afternoon, Professor," she said passing him and slid into a chair next to Kerry. She passed a smile over to her friend and raised her hand, "The department for the regulation and control of magical creatures," she said confidently. |
"Indeed, the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures at the ministry oversees all Magical creatures in and out of our country. Its divided into three divisions; the Beast Division, the Being Division, and the Spirit Division" nodding at the three students whom answered correctly, "1 point to each!" "Now, a lot of ministry commotion arises when certain creatures get assigned to certain divisions. So lets do a small recap on what does each division host. Anyone care to define the term Being for me?" |
"Professor, I believe a being is a human." Isabella said, for that was the only thing she could think of. |
"Part of the wizarding community that isn't a wizard? Such as a house-elf, a goblin, or giants?" Saylie wasn't exactly sure, but gave the answer a try. |
Jasmine sat in the back of class with her book closed and her arms crossed. She was not at all happy Professor Maline wasn't there. She rolled her eyes at the first question. |
Diabolica raised her hand. "As far as I know, a being is the fact of mortal existence, substance or nature, or more likely, something that exists in either spiritual or material form." she smiled. |
Ryan raised his hand:"That which exists in any form, whether it be material or spiritual, actual or ideal; living existence, as distinguished from a thing without life" |
"Well it could be interpreted as anything that exist and have a life. The nature of being varies by philosophy I think, giving different interpretations in the frameworks of Aristotle, materialism, idealism and existentialism" she said quickly as her hand rose the air. |
Kerry raised her hand again, "Well a being is generally any creature that has enough intelligence to understand the laws of the wizarding community and because of this, the beast that are categorized under it are expected to except responsibility of obeying and upholding these laws. Umm.. if I recall they also include the Goblin Liaison Office, the Werewolf Support Services and the Office of House-Elf Relocation" Kerry said. |
"A being is a creature which is not completely animal, but not completely beast, such as house elves, goblins, giants, and other creatures that can think and talk for themselves." AJ said while raising her hand. |
Christian listened to what people were saying. His eye brow slowly raised at the questions. What in the world was up with the attack about this and that involving the ministry? As if following a ministry official wasn't bad enough. Not to mention redecorating that official's office. "Being...being a living thing? Like a human or something." |
"A being is a creature that just 'is.' A Creature that does the act of being..." Cassandra said. |
Jasmine sighed heavily and tried to stay awake. This class wasn't the same without Professor Maline, to tell the truth it was quite boring. Professor Maline always made the class exciting and fun. Jasmine decided she would sit through class if she had too but, it just wouldn't be the same. Frowning at the Professor, she tapped her fingers on her closed book and wished to Merlin the class would end soon. |

"Precisely!" he echoed after both prefects, "Most of you were close, but Kerry and AJ here got the facts right. Beings are creatures with sufficient intelligence to take part and responsibilities for Wizarding Laws. Some of these, as stated house elves, goblins, giants, fairies, pixies, and gnomes and the list can go on" he smiled at both girls. "Two points each!" "In contrary, there are some creatures that rejected the being status in favor of beast status. Can you think of any?" |
Diabolica's hand shot up. "Cerberus? Or Manticores?" she asked. |
"What about Acromantulas?" Saylie was still slightly confused, but this seemed likely. |
Ryan raised his hand but he wasn't sure "I believe Centaur and merpeople have reject that status in favour of "beast" status, as have leprechauns" |
Kerry raised her hands, "I think centaurs, merpeople and leprechauns are some of them.." |
Amelia raised her hand, "Dear Professor, I do believe that Centaurs have chosen to be called beasts by the ministry, even though they do not partake in any part of governing. In addition, werewolves, dragons, and hippogriffs are also a part of beast division." |
Willow wrote everthing down in the parchment. and then heard the professor's question. "Centaurs and merpeople maybe?" she said a little uncertain. |
"Centaurs & Merpeople" Cassandra said shooting her hand in the air. |
"The centaurs, I believe, but I'm not totally sure on that," AJ said, a small smile growing with the fact that she finally earned Slytherin some points... her first points for the term, she thought. "Yeah that's all I can think of immediately, Centaurs and maybe the Merpeople... " she trailed off finally. |

"Close enough, Manticores did not reject. They were rejected due to their violent tendencies" winking at the girl before glancing at Ryan. Quote:
"Correct. Centaur, Merpeople, and Leprechauns decided to not take part in governing and as such decided to stick with Beast status. Mind you the ministry would have been in a better state if they ran it" rubbing his nose as he realized he got off topic, "Two points for you!" "Moving on.. who can define the word spirit for me?" |
Kerry raised her hands, "The spirit division is basically anything that has to do with ghosts, and I believe dementors even come under this category." Kerry said with a shudder. |
"A being that doesn't possess a physical form?" Saylie was getting more confused by the second, but was still trying. |
