Themea 03-21-2007 01:05 AM

Themea saw the notes floating back and forth. He wished he was close enough to nab them out of the air. He looked over at the Gryffindor prefect hoping to catch her eye.

Alexis sighed and started writing a new piece of paper. It was weird how the people who complaned about their house loseing points were not doing anything to stop the ones makeing trouble. Which would make them just as responsible. Not that she was even doing anything about it.

Reading her note smiled and nodded but that was his only reply.

Ariana glanced at Kerry, wondering when she was going to stop the nonsense that was going on. She could tell she was biding her time, waiting for the perfect time, but Ariana was beginning to get extremly annoyed and wondered when they would stop.

Michiko 03-21-2007 01:08 AM

Michiko looked around the class, she didn't see many Hufflepuffs and hoped to make some new friends in the class. She leaned her chin on her hand and sighed, drumming her pencil on her desk. While she waited for the professor to return, she started to doodle in her muggle sketchbook, which she took with her to every class.

atmor 03-21-2007 01:09 AM

Atmor chuckled at the note passing, she knew points would be deducted from Ravenclaw and Gryffindor and hoped no Slytherin made that same mistake.

Cassirin 03-21-2007 01:09 AM

ooc: I'm breaking my own no OOC rules. *sigh* Some of you behaved VERY well, and I DID notice. Thanks, guys. For those who didn't ... consequences...

Rae glanced up from the notes on her lesson and quickly Accio'd a floating note. "I can tell there are no questions, so we can continue. I'm taking two points from Ravenclaw for tardiness, next time it will be five. No exceptions. I'm taking two each from Ravenclaw and Gryffindor for passing notes. Next time it will be five also. This is my only warning, so I suggest you all help each other learn how to behave."

She turned and dropped her wand onto her desk. "I'd like to focus this term specifically on the concept of Defense. Let's get a working definition of what Defense Against the Dark Arts is all about. Tell me what you THINK a Defense class is for."

Then pointing his wand at it he muttered a Levitation charm and sent it over to the Ravenclaw's desk.

With a frown on her face, Erin watched as a Gryffindor passed notes with a Ravenclaw student. She knew for a fact that Gryffindor was in third place in house points, and she really didn't think they could afford to lose any more. Erin quickly reached in front of her and tapped the Gryffindor on the shoulder.

"This is a class," she whispered, her tone friendly, not rude. "So maybe you could hold off the talking and note passing until later." She offered a friendly smile before sitting back in her seat.

Kerry raised her hand, "A defense is a protection of something, whether it be an enemy, curse, hex, or anything else."

marfamarfa 03-21-2007 01:13 AM

Torie raised her hand and spoke clearly from her spot in the back of the class. "As with all things, Professor, sometimes bad situations arise. Just like some people chose to learn first aid as a preventative measure in case of an accident, so too must we learn defense against the dark arts, just in case something should happen. It is a class of preventative measures, and allows us to prepare ourselves, just in case."

lilbit255 03-21-2007 01:13 AM

Dinara cleared her throat and raised her hand. "Professor, I believe that a defense class is used to prepare us for what we may encounter in the wizarding world that is dark. This way, we will be able to properly defend ourselves if the time should arise."

Grovie14 03-21-2007 01:13 AM

Megan raised her hand, "Professor, a defense class is for the practical and intellectual learning purposes of defending yourself." To herself that sounded terrible but she felt as if she had to say something.

Erin put up her hand, a smile on her face. "Well basically," she began, "I think a Defense class is not only about learning spells to protect ourselves against dark creatures, enchantments, or people, but also learning what to do in the situations. It's not only about performing the spells the protect ourselves, but learning when it's the right time to use the spells."

Erin put her hand down. She thought her answer was good, but she wasn't really sure if it was correct, or what the professor was looking for.

shortfry 03-21-2007 01:15 AM

Kerry raised her hand again, I apologize Professor I thought you asked what a defense is. A defense class would be a class to help us learn how to protect ourselves against and enemy, curse, hex, or any other danger we might face in our lives."

CelestialLight 03-21-2007 01:15 AM

Vince, sighed, but was happy since they didn't lose more points than just four points. He really wanted to let Ravenclaw win the House Cup this year, knowing this will be one of his best years ever. Looking at the professor, he raised his hand, thinking about his answer. He smiled, knowing he had to guess, since he had randomly raised his hand. "Well, professor. For me, I think this defense class is very important to many wizards and witches. This class is very useful when many students turn into adults because they will possibly confront a Dark Wizard. This class is a class that teaches many things about defending yourself, making sure you will be safe when you do confront a Dark Wizard," he said confidently, wondering the answer was a good one.

Ariana raised her hand." Defence is when you have to take action to protect yourself by any means necessary. With the exceptions of the unforgivables curses and a few others. There are diffrent ways of defending youself, verbally, mentally or physically. You have to find any ways of protecting yourself." she wasn't sure if this was what she was looking for, but it sounded good to her.

atmor 03-21-2007 01:16 AM

Atmor raised her hand and looked around wandering if she had to wait if she was aknowledged to answer. After noticing everyone had answered she did the same "Defense is protecting oneself from evil hexs, thoughts or actions."

She cautiously raised her hand slowly, she hoped to herself that she wouldn't get it wrong. "I-It's to teach us to defend ourselves from hexes, charms, jinxes, and curses performed by a dark magic user, magical beasts or creatures?" she ment for it to sound like an answer, but it sounded like a question when it left her mouth.

Themea 03-21-2007 01:17 AM

Themea raised his hand. "You asked about a defense class? In which case I can only surmise that is exactly what it is, a class in which you learn how to defend yourself against, well, whatever's attacking."

Suziella 03-21-2007 01:18 AM

suzy raised her hand, " a defense class is something every wizard should take. It will help us learn to protect ourselves from any danger. Especially against dark wizards."

quidditch_chick 03-21-2007 01:18 AM

Adeline raised her hand, "I agree with what other people have said. I mean, a defense class is not only to learn defensive spells, but the knowledge too. Knowledge is just as important as the spells themselves, because if you get in an unfortunate situation, a defense class will have prepared you with the knowledge to come out of it alive."

lemondrop13 03-21-2007 01:19 AM

Kennedy raised her hand and said, "Professor, I think a Defense against the dark arts class should serve expose students to the reality that not all wizards and witches are good, but that those who are good do not have to sit back and let those who are bad take over the world. I think it should cover dark spells, dark objects, defensive objects, but also the general notion that in order to defend oneself against dark arts, you must think 2 steps ahead of the dark wizard."

Cassirin 03-21-2007 01:23 AM

"Alright, it sounds like we're all on the same page here. I've heard a variety of answers, and many of them are very good. I hope you took good notes, because I can almost promise we'll work on this definition in our homework. You all have entered this classroom with expectations and beliefs. You believe Defense is a specific class, or you believe it's a useless class you have to take, or you believe that you don't know what to believe yet." She smiled at that. "And you expect me to teach you how... to survive, maybe. Or you expect me to teach you how to fight. None of those things are wrong, but they're not all right. I'm going to teach you how to think."

Grovie14 03-21-2007 01:25 AM

Megan was still writing down everyones answer. When she was finished she looked at the Professor waiting to see what was next.

Themea 03-21-2007 01:26 AM

Themea arched an eyebrow. To think? Intriguing. Albeit to truly defend yourself you must outwit your oppent not just out match him. Themea grunted. Suberfuge and cunning are often better allies than a feirce heart and a strong back, Themea almost chuckled when he realized that the professor was teaching the very ideas of his motto.
