Lesson 3: Water plants Class: Monday, 15th (just this day) |
Professor Virohsa opened the door and waited for students to pour in. |
Kerry entered the room and smiled at the professor, saying "hello" as she walked past. She found a seat near the back of the room, where she gently slung her bag down, took out her quill, parchment and textbook placing it on the table and awaited her classmates to arrive. |
Eliza strolled into the Herbology classroom in wonderment. She had never been there before so it took a while for her to absorb her surroundings, she snapped out of her trance-like state and took a seat(?),waiting for her friends to come in. She smiled at the professor "Good day professor!" |
Professor Virohsa looked at Kerry and nodded. Deciding it was time she started preparing for class, she stood up and waved her wand. Suddenly, there were very large bubbles everywhere in the classroom. Waiting for more students, she sat down again and waited. |
Megan walked into the classroom, said "hello" to the Professor and took a seat in the front row. She pulled out everything she needed for the upcoming class. |
Nathan walked into the classroom he loved to learn. He smiled as he saw the teacher and siad. "Good morning Professor," and walked toward a desk and wited for others to arrive so that the professor would begin the lesson. He ran his fingers through his hair. He then saw the bubbles and smiled. |
Professor Virohsa smiled. "Ok, class! I hope you all brought your gloves. Trust me, you will need them!" Suddenly, inside each dark blue bubble, a red swirl started to appear. "Now, who can tell me what this magic is?", she questioned the children. |
Sarah slipped in the room and she looked up at professor virosha. She slipped into a seat in that was in the back of the room. she looked around and saw the bubbles all over the room it was very strange. Sarah Smiled anyways. |
Megan glanced at the blue bubble with a red swirl in it and raised her eyebrows. How was it doing that? |
Kerry watched quickly checked her bag to make sure she hadn't forgotten her gloves for class and then watched in awe as the bubbles around her began to fill with red swirls. She was unsure what the magic was, but she was certainly fascinated by it. |
The swirl started to swirl a bit faster, when it suddenly produced the following inside each bubble: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...nc1z/weird.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v167/fr2nc1z/okok.jpg Professor Virohsa looked at the confused children and waited to see if perhaps, they will have a better idea what the spell was. Or what a similar spell would be. |
Megan's eye widened with wonder at the new thing inside the bubble. Still, she had no clue what magic it was. She hoped one of her classmates would know to put her curiousity to rest. |
Sarah Raised her hand, "oh professor is it a spell for water plants?" she asked not fully sure what it was or if it was the right thing at all. |
Eliza gazed at the plants inside each of the bubbles I remember seeing that somewhere....I know what it is,but what is the name? she tried to rack(sp?) her brains to remember what it was. |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "Yes, it is a spell focused on water plants", she explained. "2 points for that observation", she added. After waiting for a while, Professor Virohsa decided it was about time to address the question. "This spell is very much like Accio spell. I'm sure you have heard or at least studied it?", she asked. "The only difference is that it calls plants from within a distance. Now, why would this be beneficial to us, studying Herbology?", she asked the class. |
Kerry raised her hand, "This spell would be beneficial for plants that we are unable to reach any other way, for instance we are studying water plants but we can't go diving to the bottom of the lake to get any for ourselves, so using the spell, allows the plants to come to us." |
Emily raised her hand and responded. "If someone has been injured and could use a plant for a remedy, you'd want to be able to call a plant to you rather than having to go looking for it and maybe not find one." |
Megan raised her hand, "When someone is in desperate need for a plant that is not within grabbing distance, Professor." |

"So now that we know what this spell is, we may continue. How do you think you can handle a plant that has been called through this method?", she asked the class. She waited for them to look at the bubble and guess of the best way of working with them. |
Kerry was proud she had earned Gryffindor some points, she raised her hand again, "Well professor, I would guess it's ok to gently pop the bubble to acess them and you did say to make sure we had some gloves so I would think that these plants are very fragile after being in the water so long so we need to be very gentle when handling these plants, using gloves to prevent damage to the slippery plants" |
Emily pondered this question. She thought she'd take a stab at an answer and tentatively put her hand in the air. "Professor, since it's a water plant, it would seem logical to conjure some sort of container with water in it to hold the plant in. Otherwise, it might not be as useful." It sounded like an obviouse answer, but sometimes obvious is right. |

"So, before you go ahead and pop the bubble. Let's talk about the plant. Who can identify this plant?", she asked the class. |
Emily looked at the plant. She thought it looked somewhat familiar. "Professor, it looks like some sort of sea anemone. Is that what it is?" |
Kerry raised her hand, Professor the one picture looks like a red sea coral or red sea fan," but she was unsure if she was right. |
Megan raised her hand, "Is it part of a sea corral, Professor?" |

"So, what is a coral?", she asked the class. |
Megan raised her hand once more, "the hard, variously colored, calcareous skeleton secreted by certain marine polyps, Professor." |
Emily flipped a page in her textbook, raised her hand, and read: "Corals are marine animals of the class Anthozoa, which also includes the sea anemones (order Actiniaria). Corals are gastrovascular marine cnidarians (phlyum Cnaidaria) and exist as small sea anemone-like polyps, typically in colonies of many individuals." |
Kerry raised her hand again to add a little more to what her classmates had said, "Corals come in different shapes and sizes and usually form reefs that become home to many sea animals such as starfish, sea urchings, sea anemones, fish, clams, crabs, and sea horses." |

"Ok. Any interesting facts about corals?", she asked the class. OOC- Btw, don't edit your posts. I know you just changed your color, but editing your posts may be considered cheating |
Megan raised her hand, "They can be used to make Jewelry and ornaments, Professor." |
"The ancient Romans believed coral could protect children from harm, as well as cure wounds made by snakes and scorpions and diagnose diseases by changing colour" Emily said, with her hand once more in the air. OOC- sorry! Won't happen again! :-( |
Kerry smiled and raised her hand again, "Coral reefs are usually found in shallow waters, that are warm and tropical and usually live in large colonies." |

"Ok, so now, reach into the bubble and grab your plant. But before you do, make sure that you keep a pitcher of water nearby and constantly water the plant", she added. |
Dis thought about some interesting facts she knew about coral before raising her hand. "Technically, they're not considered plants but rather animals. They all contain a sort of skeleton underneath their exterior and can actually catch prey such as fish and plankton." |
Evy raised her hand. "Corals are very sensible to changes in their environment. A change of only one degree of the temperature of the water in which they live can cause them to bleach or even die." |
Megan put on her gloves, grabbed a water pitcher and reached into the bubble to grab her plant. She kept watering it, waiting for the next set of instructions. |
Dis stared at the bubble of brilliant red coral floating near her head. Gently, she placed her hand inside but instead of having it feel like a normal, empty bubble, it felt more gelatinous and she expected water to pour everywhere, but it didn't. She cautiously picked her coral from the bubble and gently places it ina tray (?) on the table. Instead and continuously having to fill a water pitcher, she resorted to using the Aguamenti charm on her coral, watering it every minute or so. |
Emily looked around for a pitcher of water. She then got out her gloves and put them on. She wasn't quite sure how to reach into the bubble, so she just stuck her hand in. It burst immediately. She siphoned off the mess by saying "Tergeo" and waited for further instructions. |
Taking the last of her notes for a bit, Kerry put away her quill, parchment and text book and walked up to the front of the room where she filled a pitcher with water, and then picked up the bubble gently and returned it to her desk. Putting her gloves on, Kerry popped the bubble and gently handled the plant, pouring water lightly over it to keep it saturated as she examined it. |

"The purpose of this exercise is to move the coral from the deep waters, into the Greenhouse. Simply grab a movable aquarium and place the coral inside. If for some reason, you are cut by the coral, remember that the cut will close very quickly. So pay no attention to it", she added. "After the aquarium is set up, then we can begin to work with the coral more closely", she added. |
Emily walked over to where the aquariums were and picked one up. She brought it back to the table and set it down. She carefully picked up the coral and placed it in the tank. She tried to not get cut, remembering her last accident in Herbology class. She poured more water on her plant and then listened attentively for the next set of instructions. |
Kerry returned to the front of the room and picked up a moveable aquarium and returned it to her desk. She gently placed the coral inside and poured a bit more water on it as she observed it just a bit longer while she sat and waited for further instructions. |
Chikie followed the instructions of Professor Virosha very closely. She put on her gloves and pulled her pitcher of water closer to herself. She carefully popped the bubble and made sure not to do any damage to the plant itself and put it into a movable aquarium. Once everything had been completed she waited for the next part of the lesson. Normally Chikie would not have been so precausious since Herbology was not her strong point, but Ravenclaw was seriously behind and she had to help in what ever way possible to put and end to it. |
"As you may begin to notice, the color of the color is still very much bright red. So, come up here and gather some ingredients. Based on the last two classes, I have mixed your homework. The purpose of the coral will soon be evident when we poison the water to some extent", she explained. "Everyone, please put your eye gear and drop 3 drops of the mixed liquid into the aquariums. You will note that each coral will change the aquarium water to different colors, and in some cases, the coral itself will change", she anticipated their confusion. |
Kerry walked up to the front of the room again and picked up the ingredients as instructed. She was a little sad at the notion of poisioning the coral as it had such a natural beauty, but did what she was told. Returning to her desk, Kerry tied her hair back, put on her protective eye gear, and picked up the dropper. Carefully counting 3 drops aloud to herself, Kerry watched as each drop fell into the water around the coral. Kerry sat back for a few moments and awaited the changes that was to quickly come if she assumed correctly. |
Emily was concerned that they were poisoning the plants, but she trusted Professor Virohsa. She walked up and grabbed a bottle of the mixed liquid and returned to her desk, where she promptly put on her eye gear. Then, very carefully, she put in 1-2-3 drops. She was pleased to see that her aquarium's water had turned Hufflepuff yellow, though she knew it was just a coincidence. |
Dis followed the professor's instructions and grabbed a moveable aquarium and placed her coral into it, filling the aquarium with water using her Aguamenti charm. She then made her way up to the professor's desk to grab the ingredients and walked back, making sure to put her eyegear on before adding the three drops of the solution. She watched as she added the poison and noted that her coral had gone from a brillian red to a lime green, and the water itself was now a shocked blue. Dis raised an eyebrow and looked around at other students' aquariums to see if anything similar was happening. Dis raised her hand, "Professor, why would the colors change differently? Isn't it the same water, same coral and same poison we're all using? Does the effect have to do with the person administering the poison?" |
Sini put her eye gear on and added her 3 drops of the mixed liquid into her aquarium. She was taken aback hearing that the water would change, and possibly the coral. Coral was so pretty, she hoped whatever tehy were adding to it would not kill the plant. She gazed at her water that began to turn a shade of deep blue, raising her hand, "Professor, will all of our aquariums change color, or just specific plants?" |
Kerry watched as the water inside her tank turned a vivid blue color. Watching even closer, it appeared that the red coral inside was now turning a dark purple in color. Kerry couldn't figure out if this just an illusion that she was seeing through the now blue water or if the blue dye had indeed transformed the red coral purple, knowing red and blue makes purple. Kerry was going to have to investigate that further. |
Sini looked over to see that for some reason Kerry's water was now the same shade as the water in her tank as well. She was confused as to why the water was changing and was curious as to what this all meant. She saw Kerry's coral appear to change color, but looking at her tank again, the coral had not changed yet. |
Professor Virohsa walked around and looked at the children's work. "Very good class. Make sure to write 1 parchment detailing these observations, such as the color changes. I will compare these with your homework. Class is dismissed", she stated. ooc- sorry, I have a lot of hw! |
Kerry carefully picked up her coral out of the tank before she left to examine it and it indeed had changed from red to purple...interesting she thought as she noted this change down on her parchment. Placing the coral back into the tank, Kerry raised her hand - "Professor, what would you like us to do with our coral? Should we bring it to the greenhouse or leave it here?" |

"Thank you professor," Kerry replied as she gathered up her supplies and wrote her name on her aquarium. Returning the aquarium to the front of the room, Kerry made on more quick note to check back on the list of colors and medicines for the plants later on so she could complete her homework. When she was done, Kerry slung her bag over her shoulder, untied her hair, shook it out, and walked out the door smiling at the great class she had just had. |
Nikki rushing to keep up, placed on her eye gear and eye gear and adds 3 drops of the liquid into the aquarium. Nikki watched as the yellow liquid started to surround the coral and start to turn a slight orange. Lastly Nikki put her name by her aquarium and put it in the green house. then she gathered her bag and books and ran out of the door. |
Emily put her name on her aquarium, which was now filled with yellow water. She placed it on the front table and made a mental note to check back later for the list of color changes and their meanings. She said, "Great lesson, Professor!" and walked back to her common room. |
Dis took off her goggles and protective gloves and placed them back into her bag. She wrote down her homework on a piece of parchment before storing it and her quill back into her bag. She shouldered her bag, this time crossing it over her body so she could get a better grip on her aquarium. Before she left the classroom, Dis asked, "Excuse me, Professor, when is the homework due?" |

"Thank you, Professor." Dis walked carefully out of the classroom, being sure not to spill any of the water from her aquarium and she headed over to the Greenhouse to deposit her classwork. |
"Thank you for the wonderful class Professor." sini said after she wrote her name on her aquarium. She then picked it up and placed it at the front of the room with the rest of the aquariums that were being put back on the main desk. She was looking forward to studying her results more clearly and figure out what was happening to her coral. Gathering her bag and school things she walked out of the room heading to her common room. |
"Thanks professor," Sarah said as she slowly grabbed her bag and looked in her aquarium she turned toward the door she was mentaly trying to figure out what she would do to find out more about how her coral changed. Sarah had gathered all her stuff and headed out the door to the common room. |
