| Professor nodded and glanced at Naibya. "You are right, it is a marigold also known as a Calendula. You get 8 points.. however, since this is a classroom and not a circus, you are required to raise your hand before talking and 5 pts will be taken from your action", she explained.
"Now, moving on.. Can anyone tell me an interesting fact about this plant?", she asked the class.

Frowning slightly at her own stupidity, Nabiya made a point to raise her hand this time "Calendula can be used in cooking, the petals are used to garnish fish, meat soups and rice dishes. it also has medicinal uses; it is an antiseptic and can treat ringworms and athlete's foot. the flowers can also be used to lighten and brighten hair colour." reading slightly out of the text book.

Alex raised her hand, rather hesitantly.
"Er, the petals of the Pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis) are spicy and are edible, added to dishes as a garnish," she replied. Okay, perhaps the fact wasn't that interesting, but at least it was a fact, no?
"Also, the oinment of this herb is known to cure skin problems from burns to acne." edit: [mutters incoherently about her timing]

Having found the right page, Jaren raised his hand. "A myth describing the creation of the marigold is mentioned in the story of Clytie and Apollo, although it is usually referred to as the sunflower."
"In addition, in India the Marigold is known as Gendu the leaves of which are used to heal conjunctivitis, cuts and scratches and bruises. The fresh leaf is ground up, the juice is squeezed and applied a few drops at a time to the affected part."

After trying with light, finally achiving the result and returning the plant to the desk, Nadia raised her hand as well, "We observe the flowers are open from nine in the morning till three in the afternoon. It was believed only to look on Marigolds will draw evil humours out of the head and strengthen the eyesight. It must be taken only when the moon is in the Sign of the Virgin and not when Jupiter is in the ascendant, for then the herb loses its virtue."

| Professor Virohsa nodded. "Very good, Ali. That is true, calendulas are used for muggle remedies. 3 pts for Ravenclaw".
She nodded as Nadiya spoke. "Very good, dear. That is true! Muggles use it to treat athlete's foot, to garnish meals, and to change their hair color. 4 pts for Hufflepuff", she added.
She turned her attention to Alex and nodded. "That is true, it is edible and has a spicy taste. It can also treat acne. Very good, 3 pts for Slytherin", she added.
She listened to Jaren and nodded. "Oh my, that is an interesting fact indeed! 3 pts for Slytherin", she told him.
She listened to Nadia and nodded. "Ah, that is an interesting fact. To draw evil humours out of your head, now that would be an interesting sight... 3 pts for Slytherin", she replied.
"How about the name? Do we know why this flower was named marigold or calendula?", she asked the class. |

"It is said to be in bloom on the calends of every month, hence its Latin name, and one of the names by which it is known in Italy - fiore d'ogni mese - countenances this derivation. It was not named after the Virgin, its name being a corruption of the Anglo-Saxon merso-meargealla, the Marsh Marigold. Old English authors called it Golds or Ruddes. It was, however, later associated with the Virgin Mary, and in the seventeenth century with Queen Mary," Alex answered quietly, her hand waving in the air.
She sounded like she had just swallowed the Herbology textbook. Ah well.

Laurasia was just finishing up with turning the blooms on her Evening Primrose pink. She sat her wand down & retrieved one of the pink-lidded containers. She carefully placed the petals into the container & then returned the plant to the table & the petal container to the professor's desk.
As her fellow students began to respond with various facts regarding the Calendula plant, she quickly took her seat & began taking her notes.

holding up her hand "marigold, means the golden flower of the Virgin Mary.nobody knows for sure why the flower is associated with the Virgin Mary, however, in the early development of England as a nation it was established. the early origins of the name came from the many variations of how it was spelled : mary-gould, mary-gowles, and much later Mary's Gold. Slurred speech eventually shortened it into one word: Marigold!"

Peony raised her hand. "The Marigold was associated with the Virgin Mary by early Christians - like Nabiya said, it was originally Mary's Gold. They are also considered one of the most sacred herbs in India and used in temples and weddings. The blossoms are strung up in garlands."

Stumped, Nabiya flicked through the pages which covered the plant Calendula. Reading every single line, she did not seem to find the answer. Not finding the answer, she looked again and again. there was plenty on how it has a fire element, but she must have missed the part about the air element.

Nadia tried to recall, "Air is the space in which everything happens. Might it be because it's asked to leave the marigolds 9 to 10 inches apart, so that their branches may have room to spread? In which sense, they act contrary to the fire plant Evening Primrose," she said, raising her hand.
"So air isn't only for their feeding but means space where the Marigold is," and to Greek in those times air was synonym of emptiness, wasn't it? "Might there also be a reaction to sound the Marigolds experimentate, since sound is the chief characteristic of Air? I have heard some flowers react to outside noises."

| Professor Virohsa frowned. "I see that all of you forgot to do the reading on what greek philosophy says about the air element", she said disaprovingly. "Air.. possesses a cleansing quality.. which the Marigold has", she explained.
"Now.. everyone please grab a plant and place it in your table. I want you to really look at it.. and I want you to take notes on your guess as to where you get the cleansing qualities from it", she stated. "And when you are sure, please feel free to raise your hand and let the rest of the class know", she told the class. |

Nadia frowned feeling afronted. She had read. Couldn't the professor tell she had been quoting her? Then again it looked like Virohsa had a book on Greek Philosophy only she had and no one else. Not to mention a book which said all this confusing things and no other book had.
Nadia walked back to her desk with the plant, but still too mind-troubled to try deciphering what Virohsa meant or try to.

Professor Virohsa waited for all the students to grab their plants and sit down. After a few of them had done so, she waited for them to examine the plant and its parts. |

| Double Agent Stamps! Terry goes up front, gets a plant and returns with it to her desk. She tries to examine it, but it's a little difficult with the strong smell the flowers emit. Terry knows from her reading that stringing a garland of Marigold around a house's front door will prevent evil from entering the house and placing marigold flowers under your bed will protect you while you sleep. She not too sure about this cleasing of the air. After all all plants cleanse the air, it is not a trait exclusive to marigold plants. She continues to examine the plant and take notes. Plants make food using photosynthesis and that requires cylorphil, a green substance. That would eliminate the flower as a cleansing agent and the roots too. They are located underground making it a little more difficult for them to breath. Plants naturally inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. "Professor, could the marigold use its leaves to cleanse the air? It would seem to me they would breathe using them inhaling carbon dioxide and exhaling oxygen which helps cleanse the air we breathe." |
