Nikolaos Katsaros, a child shaped by ambition long before he learned to name it, was born beneath the relentless summer sun of Thebes. His father, Andreas Katsaros, once tasted professional Quidditch glory: he had been a rising star, cut short by a brutal collision with two Bludgers that shattered more than bone. Unable to reclaim his former heights, Andreas turned to Auror work, carrying both bitterness and pride in equal measure. From the moment his sons could walk, he made his expectations clear: they would fight, they would fly, and they would succeed where he had fallen short.

His mother, Larisa, softened the sharp edges of their household. Where Andreas demanded, she nurtured; where he pushed, she steadied. She was warmth in a home ruled by discipline, laughter in the narrow spaces left by duty. Nikolaos clung to her gentleness, and in many ways, she became the only refuge he trusted without reservation.

As soon as he could grip a broom, Nikolaos was enrolled in Quidditch summer camps. The pressure to excel was immense, but he discovered he loved the sport for its own sake: the speed, the risk, the rush of air tearing past his ears. He was gifted, effortlessly so, and his father's pride in him grew loud and unmistakable. That pride, however, came at a cost. His older brother, Georgios, lacked the same talent and grew to envy him. Nikolaos also learned early that success at home was a currency that bought short-lived attention and approval; he realized over the years that his achievements were not enough to satisfy a father who would praise publicly but only demand more behind closed doors.

When Nikolaos was 10, his mother fell ill with Scrofungulus. The decline was slow, cruel, and inescapable. Both sons were present in her final hours; their father was not. Georgios, unable to bear the sight of their mother fading, stepped out of the room while Nikolaos stayed until she stopped responding. In that moment, grief and anger fused. He resented his brother for leaving and his father for never arriving, and so the fractures in their family became permanent.

Months later, Nikolaos' father remarried to a much younger woman whose presence felt less like healing and more like replacement. Nikolaos tried, for a time, to offer courtesy, to shape something resembling a relationship. But grief and loyalty to his mother's memory left no room for another. His stepmother remained a stranger in his home, their exchanges polite but distant and cold.

At Omphalos School, Nikolaos distinguished himself not through scholarship but velocity. He thrived on a broom, in duelling rings, any arena where speed and instinct triumphed. He carried himself with easy confidence, a smile always half-mischief, half-challenge. Peers gravitated toward him, and girls were smitten with him. In contrast, many of his professors merely tolerated him. His grades were unremarkable, earned with the bare minimum of effort, but no one doubted where his true brilliance lived: in the air, where gravity and doubt both lost their hold.

The moment he turned 14, Nikolaos joined the Southern Europe U-17 Quidditch League. The competition sharpened him, the travel broadened him (during this time, Nikolaos began exploring his attraction beyond females), and the scouts across the entire league had their eyes set on him. It was never a question of if he would go professional; it was a matter of who would be lucky enough to claim him first.

The Chania Chimaeras signed him at 18. By 21, he wore the captain's band. By 25, he had already outgrown the league that had once thrilled him. The Greek Quidditch League was fervent but underfunded, adored but insular. Nikolaos wanted louder crowds, sharper rivals, contracts that reflected his worth, and a better chance at making it to the Quidditch World Cup. He did not want to be the best among a few in Greece; he wanted to measure himself against the world.

So when the Quidditch League opened its draft period for the 2120–2121 season, he stepped forward without hesitation. The Banchory Bangers, newly reinducted into the league, took a gamble on Greek fire.
