Put your hands together for today's member of the week, SS Hogwart' heart throb: Backslash
aka Jaren aka Steve aka Maurice aka Jim Bob and affectionately known by a few as 'Jay Jay' (Just kidding on that Jim Bob... I think...) Backslash is in navy and as usual, Kris is in green. Very busy with xander right now? Yes and no. We could do that interview thingy now if you're free enough. Sure, I should have a little time, I think. k...shoot. BANG! *giggles* (falls over) ugh. i'll be okay! Just a flesh wound? I totally asked for it, didn't I...>.< Yes, you did walk into that one. I think my many layers of winter clothing caught it better than Kevlar. Ahem Who are you and why am I interviewing you? I'm Backslash, and you told me something about MoTW...(looks around) or do I have the wrong number? Nope, this it.
How does it feel to have been bestowed this most prestigious honor? Hmmm...on one hand, (shrugs)...and on the other...well...(points to tag) (Note: His MSN tag read “If I could change the world…) tee hee
So, why don;t you tell us a little about yourself? Your name, age, your deepest and sarkest desire... You know, just basic stuff. Lol
*darkest (too much Sark for you...) I really don't know who that is, a lost person, I think (I'm typing one-handed so typos abound) There are those who call me...Jim...well no, joking. I go by Backslash, though I answer to Jaren, Steve, and Maurice. I'm...old. (lol)
Well, maybe not. I'll be 19 in a month and three days approximately. *notes it* (paranoid) What are you writing down?! A month and three days=party lol lol. My deepest darkest desire...hmm...to take over the world! And what would you do once you'd taken over? Well, that's a good question. I'll get back to you once I've taken over it. Alright, but I'm going to hold you to it.
So, what do you do when you're not online wreaking havoc in the school RP? I do not wreak havoc! I plan and initiate it. Uh huh Between SS and...other online chatty things, I'm usually found sitting somewhere with my head in a calculus text, trying to learn by osmosis.
Random: Did you know calculus is supposedly the Latin word for rock? That never seems to work. I used to sleep with my text books under my pillow. My textbooks *are* my pillows. That's really odd Hmmm I guess sometimes you want to bang your head with a rock while doing calculus. Yeah...though maybe it's because people used to count with rocks? tee hee, well yeah that's more likely. So, why calculus? Calculus because...I have to take it. Because we need it to calculate. lol What sorts of things are you calculating? I had to take calculus, too but, I never actually used it for anything. Let's see...(pulls out stack of notes) volumes, areas, polar co-ordinates, approximations... What would you use them for, though, practically speaking? …vectors, distances, velocities, accelerations, graphs, cylinders, Torcelli's Law of Drainage...am I boring you? Graphing, I suppose...if you needed to graph a cone or something...and get the computer to do it...so programming graphing software or plotting some shape on a grid. tee hee
Ok, so anyway, enough math talk. I think a little birdie told me that you draw, too. There's a thread around here somewhere... Yeah, there is... Is that something you've done for a while? Yeah, I've been doodling ever since I learned how to hold a pencil...or crayon. Do you doodle during calculus? Er...too frequently, actually. The margins are all cramped with doodles that later get erased for looking odd. And for all interested, this is my art thread on SS: updated link (shameless plug) I love shameless plugs and encourage them (which was where I was heading with this quesion). I knew that. So, we have SS, other online chatty stuff, study, doodling, amd what other stuff do you do or are you interested in? Other stuff? Well...there's always anime...in what spare time I have left that isn't taken up by the above, I like to read...and occasionally play badminton or something like that. oooooooooo I love badminton. I suck but, I like it. You do? Nice. *watches the birdie* I'm not that brilliant at it...but at least it's something I like. Shawn and I have a cheap setup that we never got to use this summer (go figure). There's a nice big badminton court that was built in a factory storage room or something...nice high ceiling... ooo Fun!
You also mentioned that you like to read. And what HP fan doesn't? What other books do you like? (lol) The Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a big one. There’s also a wide selection of Manga, Artemis Fowl… ooo I just watched most of the Silk Stockings thingee on PBS the other night (tough to watch a whole TV show, let alone a whole movie on TV without TiVO with Xander) Really? I just read the books, I've never been keen on any theatrical reproductions or the like of it. Shawn very glad they included a scene that we cannot discuss in the Witch Weekly forum. (doesn't ask) (CENSORED) *edits interview later* (kk) Ok, so Sherlock Holmes Has that had any influence on your school character? Not really all that much...I only managed to get my hands on the series recently, but yes, definitely, my character likes to emphasize on induction and deduction quite frequently. In a sense I regret not reading Sherlock Holmes sooner. I’ve always meant to read it but, never got around to it. Yeah...and there are loads of stories...and no book seems to have all of them in one place. Do you like movies at all? Don't get out enough to see very many...but I guess I do. I'm no movie buff though. lol
What is your favorite movie? If I say PoA, would that be cheating? (is lazy) Nah; this is an HP fansite. You're expected to like HP stuff. lol Indeed. I'm too lazy to think up of another one on the spot. Well, in my opinion, if you have to think about it, it can't really be your favorite.
But, anyway, how did you first get into HP? Well, I must admit that I absolutely detested the notion of reading HP. I'd grown up with the bulk of the Pokemon Mania that hit North America...and I really didn't want to get into something just because everyone else wanted to, Me too! lol Really? Nice! Here I thought I was the odd one out. Yes, I didn’t want to read it because it was so popular. Same reason, I suppose. LOL Yes, completely. You’re not as odd as you think. Tee hee Apparently not. Although, just because I'm the same way doesn't mean the both of us can't be odd. *ponders*
Ok, so you didn't want to read but, how did you get hoodwinked into it? Well...my brother left his copy of CoS lying about in broad daylight where I could see it. lol Sounds like the reason I became a ham. The book was just lying there, what else was I supposed to do? And on that particular day, I was quite bored...the rest is history. Though I didn't take to liking it instantly. It took somewhere halfway into the book before I decided I needed to read the first one and then continue. I'm a...more cynical fan in my opinion in that I like to pick at what went wrong with each book then go OMG this is like FANTASTIC!!!1!!1! lol I think I'm a laid back fan. I read them quick and then sit back and think how entertaining it was. I'm not a picker. I tried that with OotP but couldn't...too many things for my brain to run through and digest. Though, now that I think about it, how laid back of a fan can I be if I'm an administrator of an HP website? lol You're much more obsessive than me at any rate...at least, I think. Which was your favorite book? It would have to be PoA, hands down. I know it's been said by loads of other fans but hey, that was the book I liked the best. Goblet of Fire wasn't bad either. What did you think of HBP? Oh...um...do I have a word limit? XD Nope. *sits back* Seriously? Because I think I could write an essay on my thoughts on it. (If we go over the amount of characters for a post I'll either cheat and change the character limit or post a couple posts) Well, you could write the essay or you could sum it up; whatever you want. I don't have a problem with either; this is YOUR interview. lol kk I'll summarize it so I don't bore everyone half to death then. lol Okie pokie. Too bad we didn't have something like an LJ cut so they could skip it if they wanted to. Of course, you could just write the essay version up as a thread in the essay forum (goes to find it) and link to it in the interview. Nah, won't have time...though I daresay I have a draft of it.
Well, the first thing that really bugged me...is all the snogging. I'm well known here at SS (and in real life for that matter) for having severe intolerance to PDA. It just didn't seem to add too much to the plot in my opinion, and I found it rather distracting.
I found Harry rather out of character in the sense that he seemed to get over Sirius' death rather quickly than in comparison to Cedric's. It almost seemed as if someone had hit the reset button on him. Maybe it's just because I was expecting more character development on Rowling's part, but oh well.
The last thing I'm going to complain about before moving on to what I liked would be the absence of any not-generically evil Slytherins. I've been waiting since GoF for some sign or indication that Slytherins are not as bad as they sound, because Dumbledore has mentioned that not all Slytherins turn to the Dark Arts, yet...I can't find any. Slughorn comes close...but he isn't exactly what I was looking for. I was expecting a more...cynical Slytherin, one that sneered at the general stereotypical view of the House.
What I really did like about HBP was the glimpse into what made Tom Riddle Lord Voldemort. I like being able to see into the workings of a villan's mind and figure out what made them turn out the way they did, and it makes me wonder, would they have turned out the same way of something different had happened or they had made a different choice...
(I'm more or less done rambling now.) Is that the only thing you liked (I loved that bit, too)? That was the thing I liked the most, on top of Snape and Draco's character development. I seem to focus a lot on Slytherins, don't I? (sheepish) There's nothing wrong with that. Indeed, especially if you're one of them I guess. tee hee
Wow, this is going to be one of my longer interviews, I think, I almost forgot to ask you about SS but, thankfully you gave me a good segway. lol So, you're a Slytherin. I know you're really active in the school RP. How did you find out about the site and how did you get involved with the school?
[color-navy]Well, in truth, someone gave me the wrong URL for a HP fanart site. It somehow lead me to an arts and craft search engine. I typed in "Harry Potter", hoping to get back on track, and ended up at Snitchseeker. For some reason, the school RP was the first thing that jumped out at me, even though I had to wait two months to get sorted. I didn't pay attention to the rest of the site until maybe in the last year or so, actually. Oh, dear, I smell something that needs to be changed, brb (kk) Okay, so would it be safe to say that the school is your favorite part of the site? It would be very safe. I'm actually getting as obsessed as the people I RP alongside whom I constantly accuse of being too obsessed O_O I think it rubs off. tee hee *pets* What are you going to do when Jaren 'graduates' at the end of this term? In two words? No idea. I guess I'll start over...or see what fate throws me. Would you play the same type of character again? Or will you stick with someone like JayJay? Whatever it is, I seriously need a break from playing someone that serious. The next one up will have a better sense of humor. oooo But probably just as analytical and quietly nosey. tee hee You know, I finally thought up of answers to the movie question. Spiderman and Star Wars. How could I have forgotten?! So, I have to ask, what do you think of this whole 'JayJay thing ? (cringe) First of all, don't call him that unless you want to spend the rest of your life as a slimy snotball. lol and secondly? I find the whole thing to be blown out of proportion. It wasn't this bad a few terms back, but then again I'd just started getting active in the RP. I think it has something to do with the fact most characters in the RP are all female. If we were to be realistic, NOBODY would want to be within 3 feet of Jaren. Very, very, true; no offence. None taken. (thinks) Though maybe that's why he's attracting so much attention...his character can be quite..."Snapelike". And we know how big a fan club that particular wizard has... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee *fangirl squeals* Thank you for that wonderful illustration of my point. Ahem *regains composure* (waits patiently) Okay so... If you were in charge, what would you change about SS? (to improve or whatever) This is one of those "If I Could Rule the World for 24 hours" type questions, isn't it? Yes, kinda like that 'what would you do if you took over the world' question you answered with a non-answer earlier. Hmm...a n00b converter, but I think that was already taken. In that case...I'd say a system that douses spammers and flamers in cold water. tee hee Nice!
Alright, this interview is winding down to a close. Which means it's time for the real torture. Ohhh maaan. Well, third to last question; everyone's favorite. Hit me with your best shot! Previous MotW, Jan (aka evlpez) asks, "Let's say that creating a Horcrux didn't involve committing an evil act, such as murder, and you find yourself wanting to make one. What object would you choose to store a piece of your soul?" My sketchbook, or my laptop. None of them are going to be disposed anytime soon, though I think the only problem with the laptop is the possibility that my soul might be lost in cyberspace. On the plus side, whomever gets my laptop would be severely freaked out and be convinced that their computer has a virus. lol Nice!
Now it's your turn to ask a question. If Voldemort and/or his Death Eaters arrived at your doorstep and were about to storm down the door, what would be your first reaction? ooo.. . Very creative questions.
And finally, if you were a food, what food would you be? Food? Not ice-cream this time? Well...I'd be...chicken satay. Not like anyone here knows what that is. What is it? http://www.globalgourmet.com/destinations/thailand/chicksatay.html It's malaysian actually, I'm quite sure. Like a shiskabob, except only meat. ooo You dip it in this special peanut sauce too...mmm...(drools) Yummy! I stand corrected, it's a Thai dish too. (is stupid) *pets*
Well, thank you for being such a good sport. (beams and bows) tee hee |

randomness: but is it just me or was the significance of the HBP to the plot of HP not emphasized?
