Exclusive: SnitchSeeker reviews Half-Blood Prince Wii video game

It's time for another exclusive SnitchSeeker contest! At the end of our SnapeSeeking Event we promised more great prizes were coming soon. This time we have copies of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince official video game courtesy of EA Games.

Our Assistant News Admin EmmaRiddle was given an advance preview of the Wii version of the game. Here's her review:

The game touches on essential plot points but, by and large, these are cut-away segments rather than interactive elements. As a fan, particularly one who doesn’t like to be challenged (I’m likely to walk away from a video game if it takes more than three attempts to get past a certain point), hearing the cast voice-over contributions, and watching the characters re-imagined in much-improved graphic form, is enough for me. But the more sophisticated gamer and the muggles out there will be left feeling a little cheated.

That’s not to say there aren’t good bits. Duelling has been amped up a level, in terms of excitement, and is worked into the story rather well, even if it does get tiring to be stopped mid-mission to fight a random Slytherin, repeatedly. But after a while, the motions become repetitive and you find yourself flinging your arms any which way, simply to escape.

Mixing potions is similarly frustrating. Getting the movements and the ingredients right, in good time, is demanding enough the first few times, but again becomes boring; there just isn’t enough variety. And the much-talked about Quidditch is reduced to a simple ‘fly-through-the-shapes’ exercise.

Basically, your enjoyment of this game all comes down to the expectations you bring to it. If all you want is to revel in the world, collect items and get the pleasure of seeing the characters come to life, then you won’t be disappointed. Particularly since there are developments, in terms of subplots, that you didn’t see in the film and extra nuggets of comedy for the attentive fan. But if you want to be properly challenged, then I’m afraid you’re playing the wrong game.

The game will be up for grabs in the following formats:

I have it for my DS!!! Anybody who thinks about getting it well...DO!!! It is very fun like the 5th one. i like the music (which is Very catchy) the graphics (which are clear), the mini games (they even have quidditch which is a bit tricky when u have to get the snitch, but still simple), u also get to cast spell with different stylus movements (Which u learn in classes too) and of course the game overall (the story and the game in general)!!! I like the 5th one better but thats cuz it was one of my first DS games and ya kinda get hooked, but anyway its a great game too!!! :-D

I want one!

Woo! I rented that game from Blockbuster THE DAY it came out and I beat it in a week. It's awesome. ^_^

bonnieginnyfan1 09-29-2009 11:17 PM

I have it on pc and it is hell fun and I want to try it on my wii!
It is the best on wii cause when you duel your remote is your wand, when you play quidditch your remote is the brooourstick and when your making potions it is so messy!
I have completed the whole game about 15 times, found all the hogwarts crests (150/150) I got, done all the potions, quidditch and duelling clubs! I had finished the game in less than a day (I am just a natural with video games)
It is easy for me! (But at the beginning I struggle a bit but got the hang of it)
Good luck to everyone who has enter!
Have fun with the game!

Meh, it sounds like it would be fun, but I am not good at this kind of stuff. And, I played the game on the XBOX 360, and the only reason I liked it was because it was a Harry Potter game. Basically, it is extremely repetitive.

James_Potter 09-30-2009 12:48 AM

Haha, I just entered my submission. Although I've beat it, like I stated in my last post, I still enjoy some parts of it (Like potion making and dueling). And I did beat it for the Wii but I still would like it. :) haha

Good luck to all that enter!

SlytherclawPoet 09-30-2009 12:58 AM

I have this for both Wii and DS and I have to say that the Wii version entertains me much more with the duelling and the potion making.

DH Vixen 09-30-2009 03:35 AM

I got it for my DS...I LOVE it!

PotterGirl714 09-30-2009 03:58 AM
