SPAM Scam Alert (UPDATED)

We have recently been made aware of an email scammer who seems to have figured out some member email addresses (which are set so that they can ONLY be viewed by FULL members - no newbies or guests are allowed to see them). I assure you that we are doing everything we can to ensure our members's safety and security and urge you to report any emails to your email client that you may receive from 'Juliet' as spam or phishing. Do not reply to these emails!!

If you are concerned about your privacy, feel free to change your email settings in the User CP under Edit Options. If you uncheck the box that says 'Receive Email from Other Members' your email address will be completely hidden from view. However, it appears this particular spammer is merely guessing at email addresses, putting usernames in front of the popular email clients so this may not alleviate all unwanted email if your username (like mine) happens to be the first part of your email address.

Again, we are aware of this issue and will do what we can to prevent this in the future, but unfortunately this is just one of those things that even the best security measures can't always prevent. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience because I know how you feel (apparently Juliet doesn't realize I'm a happily married female ).

~The SnitchSeeker Site Elves (aka Technical Support Team)

Note: This particular spammer doesn't seem to have taken addresses from profiles. I just merely pointed out that you could ensure that your email address is not viewable to other members (it is NEVER viewable to non-members, newbies, suspended, or banned members) if you so wished. SnitchSeeker.com will NEVER EVER use your email address for anything other than contacting you about site-related things and will NEVER EVER give your email addresses out to anyone for any reason and we take steps to ensure your privacy is secured, though given the nature of the internet we cannot guarantee it.

UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that if you have your email addresses listed in your profile for IM information that might have led you to receiving one of these emails, as well. I highly recommend you keep your contact information private and PM your IM usernames and addresses to those you wish to have it. :)

Edward Penguin 05-01-2009 07:44 PM

That's not cool that someone would do that...but I know you guys work very, very hard to take care of us. Thank you. :glomp:

purple·myst 05-01-2009 07:46 PM

I got an email like that too, I sent it through onto the junk mail and reported it like that

EDIT: I may take my email off here for awhile...[:/]

Ameh 05-01-2009 07:54 PM

Oh dear. =[ People on the nets just CANNOT be nice, can they. Thank you for letting everyone know, Kris. :glomp:

EDIT: Apparently I've gotten one as well. Might be a good idea to take your MSN/Yahoo/etc. accounts off your profile temporarily? It's quite possible that's what she/it's using, as my username and emails are utterly and completely different. Has most everyone else gotten them to the email they have for MSN?

EquestrianGal88 05-01-2009 07:56 PM

Eek! I got that email too!

I'm glad I didn't open it. I sent it to my junk mail and deleted it...

Thanks for the info, I was wondering about it. :glomp:

milloy112 05-01-2009 07:59 PM

Thank you for posting this Kris and i hope my information helped you.

Slytherin Fox 05-01-2009 08:00 PM

Yes, definitely report this to your ICP if you receive an e-mail like that and don't reply back. I know on AOL it's TOS, so forward it on to them (or whoever takes care of this sort of thing for your ICP).

I truly hope no one falls victim to this scam, and am shocked they would choose SS for this sort of thing. Thanks, Kris, for letting the members know! And thanks, Ross, for being on top of things!

Antarctica 05-01-2009 08:03 PM

Rawr! Go Site Elves! :glomp:

Although I can't believe anyone would fall for that e-mail, seriously. :xd:

FoxFire 05-01-2009 08:13 PM

*screech* ACK thanks!! ^______^

Actually, this particular scammer didn't get emails off profiles. pparently this is something happening on other sites and they are merely taking usernames and adding @hotmail or @yahoo etc to the end in the hopes of finding a live email address. My email happens to have my username before the @ of my email address so I got one as well. I've double checked our settings to ensure that the member list is not viewable to guests, but member names are viewable next to posts for everyone so, this particular spammer couldn't have necessarily been stopped (rather ingenius of them). However, should we find that this is a member of the site doing this then we will, of course, take appropriate disciplinary action (ie: automatic, permanent, ban).

X-Girl 05-01-2009 08:34 PM

:xd:

Dude, that was so disturbing to read. *shudders*

My email is nothing like my screen name so I'm just gonna run off and remove it. Fwaaank you. =]

PACHOW! :whip: Disciplinary action!

Thanks for the updates and clarifications.

momentai 05-01-2009 08:37 PM

Phew. My email and my username have nothinggg in common.

However, it sounds like someone needs something better to do...

Lissy Longbottom 05-01-2009 08:41 PM

BOOOOOOOOOO to spammers <_<

They'll never crack mine  Hopefully they'll give up eventually. Thanks for the heads up Kris!

Daemon 05-01-2009 08:44 PM

EEEP! I got one too! >_< Scary stuff I tell you - especially when coming from a site such as this one!

My email couldn't be more different from my email address though, so maybe you guys should look into members as well (no idea how...).

Thank you so much for protecting us though! *snuggles you*

:glomp: <-- you

:poke: <-- them. *bares teeth*

BanaBatGirl 05-01-2009 08:45 PM

Yeah......that scammer.....actually, all spammer scammers are irritating. Ugh.

I haven't gotten any emails but go SS elves! :glomp: Kris and everyone is awesome. ^_^

Ginevra_P 05-01-2009 08:45 PM

Thanks guys, for letting us know. :glomp:

My emails are totally different from my username, so hopefully I won't get such an email.

Zoe 05-01-2009 08:46 PM

Well ... my username and e-mail address are NOTHING alike and I have recieved one of these e-mails from the said "person." The e-mail got to meet my lovely e-mail delete button simply because I had no idea who the sender was (and that's where everything else from scary people I don't know go too).

But thank you for the update on that! ^_^

Lindzers 05-01-2009 08:50 PM

I got one too... I didn't answer it though. Thanks TONS for the warning though. :glomp: That had me worried... :(

I think I'll take my email address too off too...My name on MSN and e-mail is completely different as well so there's no way she could guess it by looking off my username...at least not my username on SS...

Padfoot7 05-01-2009 09:12 PM

I don't know why anyone would WANT to spam...

Ameh 05-01-2009 09:17 PM

It's a sad fact of the world that some people just have nothing better to do, sweetie. They figure 'why not? It'll get me some attention." And it sure has... they'd better hope that Kris doesn't catch them though. Not even the Incredible Hulk can beat her when it comes to SQUISHING POWAAAAH.

Cristygen 05-01-2009 09:18 PM

Ohh, I just checked my Hotmail account (I only use it for MSN and saw that email! Thankfully is in the Junk folder because I have my non contact emails sent to my junk folder. And She did it by using the MSN contact bit, since my hotmail account and my username have nothing in common.

Thank you for handling this, Kris!

Biochemkris 05-01-2009 09:22 PM

Yeah, it seems there could have been a number of different ways this was done (neither my email address nor my msn address are viewable on my profile, though it is on the staff page, I think). We've got the technical team on this though and hopefully we'll be able to at least suss out the problem and ensure it doesn't happen again. Unfortunately, this IS the internet and no security measures are foolproof. That's why we try to encourage safe internet practices on this site since we attempt to be family-friendly (and many of our staffers are parents which helps to ensure that). :)

ZDARDSKY 05-01-2009 09:27 PM

My email and UN are quite different as well. Thank Merlin. That is sooo disappointing that people just decide to go do stuff like this. :/

Thanks for all the hard work tech team! <3

SilverTiger 05-01-2009 09:30 PM

:hmm: I haven't become a victim yet, but maybe I'll go take my msn off my profile just to be safe.

Since the tactic of using my SS username wouldn't work for me, since it's nothing like my email (Actually, even the tactic of adding @hotmail, @ yahoo, etc. wouldn't work either.) And any emails from people I don't recognize go directly to spam anyway.

Padie 05-01-2009 09:49 PM

Thanks for the warning, guys! :D

I don't get how some people waste time by doing that kind of stuff *shakes head* though I have to admit that it was rather amusing to read it XD

D.A Forever 05-01-2009 09:54 PM

My email and SN aren't alike either, and as far as I know I haven't gotten one of those emails as of yet. I'll be deleting it first thing, if I do. Thank you SO very much for the heads up, Kris! :glomp:

Luna Laufghudd 05-01-2009 10:16 PM

Thanks so much for letting us know!
This is why we love you so :loved:

Saz Hale 05-01-2009 10:35 PM

i havent got one yet but anyway ive taken my email addy that i use only for msn off just in case im rather wary about spam cause i always seem to get it a lot

daydreamer 05-01-2009 10:39 PM

I quite agree on this issue. I would be really upset if I get another worm on my laptop if the scammer was good at that!! It cost me and my husband $80just to get it fixed and I don't have that kind of money to fix it again!!!! There rant over!!

Golden Monkey 05-01-2009 10:40 PM

My email is totally different from my SN so I think I'm safe, though I'll definitely delete any that I do get.

Thanks for the heads up Kris :glomp:

MeredithRodneyMckay 05-01-2009 10:50 PM

My SS email is different to my UN so they shouldn't get it through that.
Mind you I think I did have two of those emails today...on two seperate addy's.
Both were in my junk/spam folders so I didn't open them.Never do when it's from someone I don't know. :)

Thanks for the heads up though!

Paint.the.Limelight 05-01-2009 11:03 PM

My email is pretty far from my username. I haven't gotten this email. I want to thank you Site Elves for all your hard work anyway!!

Kranendonky 05-01-2009 11:03 PM

ohh this isnt good. Im gonna take my email off here for a while. Im also gonna go check my inbox now :/

EDIT: Im only letting you Admins send me mail :)

obsession8888 05-01-2009 11:09 PM

I got an email like that too. I was like.. "I'm not a guy." DELETE.

Alicia08 05-01-2009 11:47 PM

Thanks for the heads up;), I got 2 email from this person and tracked down there name on another website of people complaining about the samething, that this person is finding there email adresses and sending them stuff!!! Man dont people have lives and better things to do?<_<

Patronus Charm 05-02-2009 12:52 AM

thanks for the info.....all my spam goes to a spam box....

Gryffindor2009 05-02-2009 01:41 AM

I checked and I don't have any of that listed on mine. i don't use IM much anymore; my e-mail and SN are completely different, lol. I'll never understand why people get bored and think it's cool to spam.

Deadmau5 05-02-2009 02:50 AM

LOL I saw that. Wish you guys could see my response

princess of*hp* 05-02-2009 03:20 AM

Thanks for the warning, guys :D I'll keep a look-out

SheydaMalfoy 05-02-2009 04:23 AM

*shakes head* spammers..

half_blood_prince 05-02-2009 06:23 AM

oh my thats no good at all i hope who ever is doing this either stops or gets caught

harita 05-02-2009 06:25 AM

thanks for letting us know...i will report if i find any such spam in my id...

BR1TN3YY 05-02-2009 09:17 AM

I luckily haven't got any messages, and my email address is nothing like my name on here so i should be good. Thanks guys.

Princesspotter1234 05-02-2009 09:44 AM

That's a pretty serious thing, but I've not received any such emails. Plus, my SS Username is so far away from my email id that it'd be hard to guess, and as you say, the real id's aren't available to the spammer.

Kazters 05-02-2009 01:29 PM

i got it the other day, i just marked it as spam -

Sneakeh Cat 05-02-2009 01:41 PM

I just checked my MSN account and I have no emails^_^ Thank goodness.

But, thanks Kris for the telling us what's going on.

Hermionespell 05-02-2009 03:26 PM

Thank you for letting us know about this.

Ameh 05-02-2009 05:03 PM

So I just logged on to my hotmail... and I got the second one, the money one this time. Just thought you should know. ;)

finfin91 05-02-2009 06:09 PM

How did the scammers do this through SS? Please do all you can to make this not happen again!

Crayola 05-02-2009 06:16 PM

So ... I checked my email today, and it turns out I did get this too! :xd: Totally didn't know, which clearly shows how much I check my emails. :hmm:

Anyway, can I just say I found it hilarious? :lmao: Totally creepy and stalkerish and not correct, but still .. hilarious. :P

But thank you, Kris, for letting us know about it! :D

Pigwidgeon Took 05-02-2009 07:27 PM

HAHAHA I had gotten one of those and thought it was just a hilariously desperate member... okay I'mma go play with privacy settings now.

Thanks for sharing!

Yaya 05-02-2009 11:32 PM

OK...that makes me think...*takes off msn name for a while*

done..

and of course, no one would fall for that email....it was just too weird...

Ginny GL 05-03-2009 03:20 AM

GinnyW21 05-03-2009 05:41 AM

XxX.BettingOnMe.XxX 05-06-2009 06:26 PM

It's not through us, they've just chosen our website, for whatever reason, to target.

Con_Stripes 05-08-2009 10:47 AM

Weirdly... I am a guy and I never got the email. I feel left out

Mrs_Molly_Weasley 05-09-2009 03:11 AM

Thank the lord! I didn't get one :) Thank you Elves!! You rock the world!

PS. 'Juliet' my edress has nada to do with my User name so you might as well not even try it.

Maxilocks 05-30-2009 02:48 AM

"Apparently Juliet doesn't realize I'm a happily married female." :lmao:
