Default Lottiepot’s Stitches Through Seektober

Hi friends!

A warm welcome to my first ever Seektober challenge. I am terrible at drawing so there was no way I was going to be able to get through this on artistic talent alone. I am however somewhat able to sew and as my sewing machine is currently broken, I’ll be attempting hand embroidery instead.

I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to finish as hand embroidery takes a considerable amount of time but it’s worth giving it a go right? As my options are a little more limited, I’ll be doing the Aparecium challenge so I can pick from the other categories.

Hope you all enjoy and good luck to my fellow challengers!

I love that tree and the texture of the leaves. Thank you for explaining how you make the magic happening. I don't embroider at all, except for a cross stitch, but in my mind, I'm taking very careful notes.

oooh, lots of fun things to look at since I last checked in. the peacock feather is so cool, the chain stitch looks really fun. and I really like the colours you used in your polyjuice prompt. the snake is absolutely adorable and it looks like it's all come together really nicely.

the tree I think is my favourite so far, and the grass is a really nice touch

I also enjoy reading your descriptions of the process before I open up the spoiler and see what delights lay inside

What a gorgeous little tree! It does look complicated, TBH, despite how you modestly described stitching it. Such a neat tree *continues to admire*

Prompt #7 - Seeker

SPOILER!!: A little golden friend

I was extremely sick yesterday so double the amount of work today in order to keep up. Could’ve gone for something simple but you know me, why would I make it easy on myself?

I haven’t quite achieved the level of being able to embroider people. The next best thing was a Golden Snitch for the Seeker prompt. Once again it also gave me the opportunity to embroider cursive writing. The actual Snitch is outlined using a ‘Back Stitch’ and filled in using a ‘Satin Stitch’. If I had more time I would’ve neatened up the satin stitch to remove some of the twists but it is an extremely time-consuming thing to do. The wings were a little more complicated in that they are comprised of several layers of ’Stem Stitches’ which I alternated the direction of in order to give it that fluffy feathery look rather than being flat.

SPOILER!!: Friends are the best!

If you can cross stitch, you can definitely embroider! I’m enjoying keeping a record of how I made each one in case I want to go back at a later date and improve on them. Thank you for your comments

Definitely chose the right house to do . Not sure I could even begin to comprehend how to embroider a badger.

Thank you! A tree jumper would be amazing. Trees are the best!

I can definitely feel the improvement. It’s a bit like training your hand to do it without thinking, once you get the hang of each different kind of stitch it almost becomes second nature.

Thank you I think I’m better at sewing letters than writing them.

Thank you Felix! Your comments mean a lot to me considering the level of artistic talent YOU have. I might give a full sized tree a go one day. Working on small scale is unnecessarily hard but I feel o can get even more detail in a big tree scape.

It’s something I think beginner stitchers could do as you don’t really have to plan it as such. Just go for it and keep building up until it looks good. Can’t go too wrong. Thank you

Thanks Kate! Wish I’d made it just that tiny bit bigger and then could’ve included some actual toadstools etc.

Prompt #8 - Tea

SPOILER!!: Fancy a cuppa?

I’m British which means I am obviously impartial to a good ol’ fashioned brew and I have a mug collection to prove it Went a slightly more civilised (and Umbridge approved) route with this one though with a cup and saucer combo in a fetching shade of pink. The type of stitch I used was a new one for my Seektober challenge and is called a ’Whipped Stitch’ which gives it a 3D twisted effect with little gapping and is super useful for outlining a design. The cup itself I doubled up the thread which I regret as it’s a little to think but we live and learn. Unfortunately I didn’t have a paler brown thread for the tea, I much prefer mine with milk but I’m sure Umbridge could put up with the bitter taste. Once again I used a ’Satin Stitch’ for filling in larger areas. To continue the theme I opted for flower details using the ’Woven Wheel’ stitch complete with a two stranded ’Fishbone Stitch’ for the dinky little leaf.

SPOILER!!: Replies <3

You’re far too kind to me! ;_; I wish one of the prompts was practice and I could’ve done a little tutorial on the different kinds of stitches. Maybe I’ll just tack it on the end?

Hello! Welcome to the wonderful world of embroidery! Thank you for your lovely comments. It’s honestly not too taxing, been doing it whilst watching back to back episodes and it becomes a sort of mindless thing to do with the hands xD

That tree the detailing/effect you did for the leaves is just breathtaking. And AGAIN with the stitched lettering under the snitch...so pretty and what a lovely complementary color too!

And as I sit here with my cuppa....YOUR cuppa is stuuuuuuuuunning. Love seeing a return of the flowers and just wow! It's is so cute and that whipped stitch is really interesting to look at.

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

Lottie Lottie Lottie!

I know I've been following your work through messages but there's much more on here than I've seen so far!

I absolutely adore the wee snake, as you know, but that tree is so GOOD! The detail and the way you've made the leaves look. It must have taken you HOURS.

I also love the snitch and the teacup. Heck, they're all bloomin' AMAZING! I don't know how you get your stitches so neat - and freehanding it too. You're very talented. I admire your dedication and focus to this - I wish you could lend me just a wee smidge of it.

Prompt #9 - Halloween

SPOILER!!: Spooky Stuff

I left this one a little late and it became a bit rushed towards the end so not my best work. I’m quite happy how the pumpkin came out, ‘Whipped Stitch’ for the outlining and ’Satin Stitches’ to fill the rest in. I used slightly different shades of orange to help with the slightly 3D effect which I think worked out well. It took a LOT longer (try finishing at 1am) to do the pumpkin that the bat just became so rushed and my fingers were aching and it was easier to fill the outline with ’French Knots’ which is why it has become misshapen. Nevermind.

SPOILER!!: I appreciate you all ;_;

I think whipped stitching might come up a lot. It helps form a constant unbroken stitch so is super useful for outlining. Haven’t tried it with lettering yet though

Thank you Kath. Your supportive comments mean a lot to me

Prompt #10 - Weasley’s Wildfire Whiz-Bangs

SPOILER!!: Boom!

Who doesn’t love a good firework? Except my poor dogs of course who are terrified and I spend hours trying to calm them down but that’s beside the point. Fireworks are pretty to look at, just wish they were all silent. ANYWAY, my inspiration for this came from incorporating fire-like colours into my design. The outline is made using a ‘Split Stitch’ which is a new type for my Seektober although really commonly used in embroidery. I find it works best with two/three strands rather than the full six that embroidery thread comes in otherwise the lines become too bulky. The explosion is made of dozens of ’Straight Stitch’ dashes. I’d love to one day use a darker base fabric and fill the hoop with a load of colourful fireworks.

Thank you! I think the bright orange could work really well on black/navy fabric for a cool Halloween embroidery.

Oh my goodness!

What a cute snitch! It reminds me of Lindt chocolates with the shape and the bright yellow colour

The tea cup is SO elegant!!! Makes me immediately think of having tea with the late Queen {and I also think of the series The Crown!}.

Love the pumpkin and bat! With regard to the latter, you can immediately tell what it is so don’t you worry about it being misshapen! :3

Of all that I have caught up on in this post, the firework piece is my FAVE!!! The colours have me like *___*

Your firework is very pretty and you definitely should fill a dark fabric with lots of them, that would look so cool.

So it’s been a WHILE since I uploaded anything thanks to a rough couple of weeks. I love seeing but it does take a lot of concentration and planning and time to complete that I just didn’t have the energy for. HOWEVER, I am determined to complete this challenge and so shall be working overtime until I get them all complete. Therefore today I present to you three prompts!

Prompt #11 - Purple

SPOILER!!: Lavender!

I’m starting to run out of space on my fabric so these prompts are going to become smaller and smaller. Unfortunately small things aren’t so neat as I didn’t change my needle size and it became harder with every stitch. Nevermind. Nothing says purple to me than a sprig of Lavender. Comprised of a ’split stitch’ stem and ‘Detatched Chain Stitch’ petals.

Prompt #12 - Imperio

SPOILER!!: Unforgiveable!

Went relatively simple with this one and just embroidered the actual word. Tried to switch up my font a little and go a bit disjointed and odd to reflect the negative nature of the spell but it just ended up a bit.. messy. Clearly need to get back into the swing of sewing again and rebuild my tolerance. Chose a dark red for the aforementioned reason too. The only stitch I used here is a ’Whipped Back Stitch’.

Prompt #13 - Valentines

SPOILER!!: So many hearts!

Keeping it simple she says as she decides to do THREE variations on a love heart rather than just stick to one. Couldn’t help it though, my favourite colour is pink and the more I can include on my fabric the better. Unfortunately I should’ve thought about placement here as the edge of the fabric was unable to sit in my embroidery hoop correctly and therefore wasn’t pulled taut enough. The result is some misshapen hearts but who says hearts have to be symmetrical?! Bottom left is a simple ’Satin Stitch’, bottom right is a load of ’French Knots’ which I think resembles those teddy bears you can get made of roses, and the top? I have no idea if it has an official name. It’s basically a satin stitch but crossing to the opposite side resulting in this twist effect that I really like. Or at least I would if I could get it even. Will definitely be trying it out more often though.

Thank you SO much for everyone who has offered kind words and support so far. It truly does mean a lot to me . Hugs for you all!

Ooooh, multiple entries to admire at once. I particular ADORE the lavender, omg it’s perfect, I just LOVE the shade of green you used for the stalk as well. As always, huge fan of your writing stitches. I find it amazing how you can stitch in cursive, it’s better than I could ever do with a pencil, lol!

The hearts are so cute :3 and I love that you’ve used different types of stitches on them. All very well done. <3

I am determined to complete this challenge so please prepare yourself for a whole bombardment of multiple entries over the next couple of days. I honestly don’t know how I’m going to do it seeing as each entry, as tiny as they may seem, takes me about 45 minutes to an hour and a half to complete. I need more hours in the day!

Prompt #14 - Obliviate

SPOILER!!: Fading Memories

Started relatively simple with my first challenge tonight. I say simple but unfortunately quite poorly again and my hand was absolutely shaking as I attempted to write neatly. Apparently my sewing is neater than my penmanship tonight so at least that’s something. The writing is a super simple ’Back Stitch’. My idea behind this design is the purpose of the spell, to erase memories, and therefore the ombré effect is supposed to symbolise that happening. It’s a little hard to see the white thread. Should’ve perhaps gone for a brighter white which may have stood out a little more. I do like how the ombré turned out though.

I’m always so happy to see you here, my lovely!

I too love the green shade, it’s that perfect pastel green without verging on lime. Truthfully I actually find it easier to sew neatly than I do to write. My actual handwriting is so small it becomes eligible. I’m restricted with the size of the needle when I sew so it has to bigger
