What lessons can HBO Max learn from the original films?

The original Harry Potter films hold a special place in the hearts of millions, but even the most loyal fans can admit they weren't perfect. From iconic scenes and brilliant casting to rushed plot points and eyebrow-raising decisions (looking at you, "HARRY! DID YAH PUT YAH NAME IN DA GOBLET OF FIYAH?!" and "Shoelace"), the films offer a rich source of both inspiration and cautionary tales for the TV series.

This thread invites thoughtful reflection on what the HBO Max reboot can learn from its cinematic predecessor. What should be preserved—whether it's the stunning production design, a particular tone, or standout performances? And what missteps should be firmly left in the past—questionable adaptations, dropped storylines, underused characters, or tonal whiplash? How can the series strike a better balance with pacing, develop character arcs more faithfully, or enrich the world-building that sometimes got sidelined for spectacle?

Bring your critiques, your nostalgia, and your hopes for how HBO Max can honour the legacy of the films while carving out a story that feels both familiar and fresh.

Next to nothing.

TV and movies are not the same thing. This is the first time a Harry Potter tv show is ever being attempted and, according to some fans, it almost definitely will be making mistakes of its own. It is just the nature of the beast.

For that matter, both the movies and the books are not perfect to some fans, and vise versa. There are plenty of people who love the movies who are afraid that the tv show will somehow mess that up, which it won't, but, nonetheless, the feeling is there.
