| | | Potions Laboratory The Potions Laboratory is a place of shadows and simmering light, its stone walls lined with shelves of jars containing dried herbs, curious powders, and various pickled things that float in viscous solutions. The air is thick with a mingling of scents from acrid smoke to sweet herbs to the faint metallic tang of scorched copper. A long central worktable bears the marks of years of brewing, scarred with stains that refuse to vanish despite repeated Scouring Charms ― let's just say it gives the table character.
Tucked into the back corner is a perpetually damp nook outfitted with enchanted scrub brushes and self-heating basins. The brushes here at the Cauldron Wash Station scrub and clatter of their own accord, sometimes overzealously... sometimes sluggishly, leaving most students reluctant to linger here but always satisfied with the cleanliness of their cauldrons. A glass fronted case gleams along the side wall, filled with rows of neatly labeled vials containing potions in every imaginable shade and viscosity. A few are used for study while others are locked with a complex rune seal and marked strictly for observation only. At the back of the room, a stone archway opens to a narrow annex enchanted to draw out smoke and noxious fumes. Though designed for safety, it has also become a favored escape for students needing fresh air — or the equivalent of it as found in the dungeons. Near the Ventilation Annex sits a long battered table where failed concoctions are emptied into neutralization cauldrons ― Professor Cox does not approve of Vanishing Spells. The mixtures inside bubbles ceaselessly and give off unpleasant ever-changing stenches that seems to cling to anyone who loiters around any of the cauldrons for too long. Ever wondered what the antithesis of Amortentia may smell like? You've likely found it here.
Professor Cox holds his Potions office hours here when classes are not in session. Students may approach him here for consultation on coursework, brewing difficulties, or research proposals. Please be mindful not to interrupt if he is overseeing an experiment already in progress ― he will acknowledge you when it is safe to do so. If he is not present, do not wander the dungeons in search of him. Instead, trace the Lagaz run upon the enchanted rune plate affixed to the wall near the Cauldron Wash Station with the tip of your wand and he will be alerted to your presence. If urgency warrants, the professor will return through his private passageway... though otherwise expect a reply delivered in writing at a later time.
Professor Cox is also not responsible for the fate of any lost pet that may or may not be harvested for ingredients, so do ensure that yours does not just-so-happen to get lost in here.

Collin O'Shea Owl Post | Ariannnnnnnnaaaaaaa Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo ❄ rolling in the ink ❄ It should be a surprise to exactly no one that knew her that Cat found herself in the potions laboratory during her free time shortly after the term started. There were several reasons for it (not least of which was the fact that she had missed it, okay?). The reason she was giving herself was quite simple: she had used the last of her Craterotomy Potion store over the summer and she was not looking forward to acne returning.
So, here she was with her potions kit and textbook, prepared to spend the next few quiet hours here. Alone. Brewing potions. Just as she preferred.
She took her time setting up her space, making sure everything was clean and in order before starting to gather the needed ingredients. She fell into a rhythm easily, going about her movements through the laboratory like it was her second home. And, really, that's what it felt like. This place and the library felt as comfortable to her as the Ravenclaw common room did, and she probably spent more time in the first two than in the latter over the past three years. Why should she start off this term any different?

This place and the library felt as comfortable to her as the Ravenclaw common room did, and she probably spent more time in the first two than in the latter over the past three years. Why should she start off this term any different? This castle is an impossible maze. Poorly designed. Architecturally absurd. Dark, dingy, and DAMP.
It was this last thing that bothered Asena the most. The castle's humidity was already doing a number on her hair and it would only be a matter of time before it affected her skin too - something that she took immense pride in. Hell would freeze over before Asena Kaplan let Scotland ruin her skin. As such, she planned on taking matters into her own hands. Her Kaplan Co. serum, while truly a miracle product, wasn't a preventative solution. Not yet, anyway. With some tinkering in the potions lab, surely she could find a way to enhance its--
Oh.
She wasn't alone.
Asena wore a look of surprise as the door closed behind her. Bit loud, they should fix that. "Hello." She didn't recognize the girl from "the Feast" (misleading, disgusting food) which meant she was not a first year, transfer student, or Hufflepuff. "Mind if I join you?" She was asking to be polite, but did not plan to turn around no matter the answer, fyi. This was dire.

Collin O'Shea Owl Post | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo ❄ rolling in the ink ❄ Her space was set. Her ingredients and other necessary items were spaced in the correct order; the sequence she’d need to use them throughout the potion brewing process. The fire was lit, and the water was heating.
Nothing made Cat feel so in her element as this. Studying made her lose time, sure, but more in a “get sucked in without a life vest” sort of situation. It was in potion-making only that she felt she was floating rather than treading water and hoping for the best outcome.
She liked to float.
The loud click of the door was enough to get her attention, though. Cat jumped slightly at the sound, turning immediately to see who - or what, even - had joined her in the room. It was… just a girl.
Cat eyed her for a moment, trying to determine if she knew her. She quickly decided that she did not.
She gave a half-shrug with one shoulder. “It’s open to any student, so, it wouldn’t really matter if I did,” her tone was good-natured, friendly even. “But thanks for asking.” And, because she couldn’t help herself, she continued, “What are you working on?”

| doesn't proofread tweets | #wrongaboutcereal | #siriusly? | emo to the extremo Asena offered a polite smile, not overly exuberant, but friendly enough to suffice as well mannered. "I am altering something for my skin," she admitted as she set her things down. She hadn't planned to be forthcoming, but the question hit a nerve and triggered a shift in her features that let way into some of her building frustrations with this place. "The humidity is unbelievable." It was humid in Istanbul too, but this was somehow different - it seeped through the castle walls and her hair was suffering the biggest hit. This was something she would have to deal with later. "Terrible for the skin." Her expertise, so. She would know.
Enough about her, "What are you brewing?" She surveyed the neat array of ingredients, already forming a guess, but choosing to ask anyway as she set out her own cauldron. Asena was impressed, tbh. From her initial assessment of the student body, she noticed a certain lack of ... let's call it, haste. Hogwarts struck her as a place of very little rigor, so it was refreshing to see someone else taking matters into their own hands. Why wait for a potions lesson to get started for the term? "I'm Asena, by the way." Vital info.
