You shall have to. Fifteen minutes or so. I need to EDITT! ^_^ |
“Good to see you, Bella,” Lucius’s voice was stiff as he greeted who was the eldest of the trio that was the Black sister. He did not dislike Bellatrix – they were friends, and could get along fine -- even amazingly when Jenna was with them, though much of the open warmth evaporated, only to be replaced by formalities, when the two of them were not in her presence, together. But the fact was, his mother had just half-dragged him here and, at the moment, he was not feeling too chummy towards her. Towards anyone, in fact. “Good to see you too, Lucius,” Bellatrix replied with a quick smile. Next to her, Mafilda's eyes travelled down Bellatrix’s bare, honeyed shoulders, and she nodded approvingly to herself - the action would have caused anyone to freak out but, of course, this was Bellatrix, who only raised an eyebrow. “Good evening, Mrs. Malfoy," she said, coldly. “Good evening, honey,” Mafilda replied, and for once she sounded genuinely pleasant. Or as close to the term 'genuinely pleasant' as she could. “Charmed to meet you. It is quite a wonder that we have not met before.” “The pleasure is all mine,” Bellatrix replied coolly, one eyebrow still arched – as far as she knew, Mafilda Malfoy was not supposed to be nice. The older woman's change of tones hinted at ... some sort of disturbance, and Bellatrix wondered what new, disastrous plan Mafilda had at the back of her wicked mind. “You are looking for prospective bachelors this night, I hope?” Mafilda said, with a huge smile. Get straight to the point, always Mafilda Malfoy's motto. Her strategy made Bellatrix take a step back, though, and it was clear the Black found the statement most distasteful. What was the old woman trying to get at? “I have no wish to do so, Mrs. Malfoy.” “That’s what they all say,” Mafilda giggled brightly [Lucius's eyes widened in part-horror, part-disbelief]. “... then they fall in love and, before you know it, they elope." She gave another giggle, then waved to Bellatrix. "Well, tata honey. I should leave you and Lucius alone, you two seem quite taken with each other.” With that, she swept off, her purple dress trailing behind her. “The hag –” Bellatrix hissed dangerously, not at all caring that Lucius was present, and could hear her. If his mother could not keep her toe in line, neither would she. “Need I apologize?” he asked coldly. “Ignore her, if you must. You know fully well that I have no intentions of -” “Cut the crap," Bellatrix interrupted. "If you can’t get her to keep her mouth shut, then you had better stay away from me tonight, Lucius." Her tones were as angry as they were haughty. Which was very. “I am no ScaredyPuff like Andra Castle, who tolerates her for the most part. If she troubles me – I shall not be kind.” |

When she came up to him, she did not look very happy, and Varius knew at once that something was wrong. Would have known, even if her face had not been this transparent, or this irritated. “How did it go?” he asked her, as he pulled up a chair and motioned for her to sit down. If she was going to rant, she had better do it while comfortable, right? Andra did not sit down. She was too distracted to register his little act, in fact. “It went – oh Varius, it went terrible,” she said, shaking her head. She would have grabbed him by the shoulders and shaken him a bit, too, but she knew pretty well that this was not their drawing room. People like Mafilda would love to sorely misinterpret the friendship between them. “She had the nerve to call me a copy cat, and I really wasn't too good either, so she took her chance to say a bunch of stuff about how I’m not a good hostess.” “I told you to stay away,” Varius pointed out most unhelpfully, as she finally decided to sit down besides him. Their little place of seating was shaded by beautifully-lit rosebushes, and presented an adorable view, but that did nothing to calm Andra down. “I had to greet her!” she scolded him. How could he act smug, right now? Right now, when she needed him? “You know that is expected of me tonight, Varius." But Varius was not going to give in. “That's not even a good excuse,” he said a little crossly, and he folded his arms across his chest. “You should have come away at once after the hellos. You know how she is. She was bound to make trouble, for you – she loves causing that more than she does putting on that load of make-up she cannot live without out. Though,” he went on, more thoughtfully. "I'm pretty sure she does it for our benefit. We might have a heart-attack, all of us, if we were to see the face that launched ... a thousand cosmetic lines. Because the people behind those lines didn't want to have to look at her face - bet it's all scary, without the powder stuff." “Forget the makeup,” Andra mumbled. She knew he was trying to make her laugh, but it did nothing to lift her spirits. “I'm going to get her back for this.” Plan A - make her laugh - had failed. Varius switched to Plan B - talk Lucius - with ease and grace. “Come on cheer up, Anderz – you know you shall get your revenge when you marry Lucius.” Have lots of babies. That thought tickled him, but he did not say it out loud - she would probably thwack him in the face, if he did. But what he did say, had the desired effect - Andra’s eyes totally lit up. “Thanks,” she grinned, and her chair scraped back, across the grass, as she rose to her feet once more. “You’ll go far yet, boy. In the meanwhile, I think I’ll give this whole hostess thing another try. And Var?” “Yes, An?” The corners of his mouth twitched with laughter, but he held it back. She did not always chop his name down into this nickname, but he certainly had fun when she did - it gave him an excuse to chop hers. “She’s arrived.” Her tones were quiet, much quieter than usual, and the start of the smile left his face as if it had been a bolt of lightning - quick, attention-catching, but not long-lasting. Not as a rule, anyway. He turned round, knew it would be her. Jenna. |
