It is January. Winter was in full scale, prompting some toasty classrooms. Arriving, students would notice Professor Menon waiting by the door to welcome you. Inside, the classroom was decorated per usual with muggle items. Today however, the main table up front was filled with open boxes of arts, crafts, and supplies. On the blackboard it reads, "You can look, but don't touch, and then have a seat." So go on ahead and pick a cushy bean bag chair to sit; you're free to chat quietly among yourselves until the lesson begins.

Levi Singh-Phora :: Hufflepuff

Such lovely weather it was!

The perfect sort for chai. Had he been the sort to skive off classes, he’d have headed off to the kitchen to grab himself a cup. As it was, he was not that type so Levi continued on his way to Muggle Studies. Arriving there, he sent Professor Kraetos a bright smile. “Hi, professor!” Ooh, boxes of stuff! The Hufflepuff peered into them, his eager beaver mind full of interest.

Artsy things.

Cool, very cool.

He couldn’t wait to find out how they’d all be using those. His mind still on chai, Levi chose the squishiest bean bag he could find before crashing onto it.

Ayden D-K; Hufflepuff

Winter meant one thing for Ayden Diggory-Keighley - birthdays! Him and his siblings were turning fourteen this year which kind of seemed unreal and yet also not?

The arts and crafts meant one thing, which was that they were clearly doing some sort of craft project. Unless Professor Menon was pranking them, as professors seemed to like doing. Not really pranking, but more just taunting? Teasing?

"Hi Professor M," Ayden said in his usual greeting. Surnames were hard and he was all about just the initial. Surveying the seating arrangement, he had to admit that bean bags did not really seem conducive for crafting, so perhaps they were being pranked.

Taking a seat, cross-legged on one of the bean bag chairs, he sent a friendly smile at his [slightly] older housemate. "You did great in the match last weekend." Just in case Levi was curious - even though he hadn't taken an interest in playing for Hufflepuff himself thus far, he was fully attuned to the quidditch world.

Tiana Patterson l Gryffindor

Winter was in full swing and Tiana was happy that she didn't have flying lessons today or a quidditch match in this cold, windy, and snowy weather. She was not a fan of feeling cold from top to toe, so toasty warm classrooms were right up her alley. Beaming brightly as she passed by Professor Menon on her way inside the classroom Tiana greeted "Hi Professor Menon, can we bake like muggles do sometime?" The young lioness then proceeded over to sit down on a purple bean bag chair she had selected after taking a quick peek at the boxes up front. Maybe they were going to get to paint their portraits today or something else just as fun? Curious, Tiana then took out her writing supplies just to be ready in case she needed something to write on.

"Hello, Mr. Singh-Phora." Chip off the old block, is what they would say.

"Hello Mr. D-K." He rolled with the naming. "Try not to sit like that for too long, its bad for the blood." Though there was a potion for everything these days.

"Hello, Miss Patterson." Baking? "Hmm... take a point for the suggestion. I'll keep that in mind for the future." Though what they'll bake may not be what they have in mind.

Kraetos gave them plenty of time to settle in before he shut the door behind him. The deep orange curtains were drawn close.... no, he wasn't going to be that dramatic today. The curtains were drawn open again, keeping the natural light in before he stood in front of the table to address the class.

"Alright, everyone. Thank you for not touching the contents of the box up here." Giving one of the boxes a bump. "Before we get into the contents, what are some ways you spend time with your family or even a group of friends?"

He paused, giving the students a chance to share their answers, curious to hear their thoughts.

OOC:Thank you waiting, everyone! Class has officially started, so new posters can join in as if they’ve already been here to avoid IC consequences. Expect the next post in at least a day from now. ^_^

Levi Singh-Phora :: Hufflepuff

Soon enough, Levi was being joined by classmates. One being Ayden, his fellow Hufflepuff. The fourth year shot the third year a grin. “Thanks! I try my best for our House.” Seeing that he was kinda sorta really good at the sport, Levi was reconsidering his career path from becoming a professional duelist. He wasn’t quite sure what Auntie Winnie would think about that - he just hoped he wouldn’t be disappointing her.

But that would be thought of more in depth later since the lesson was getting started. Which was a relief because Levi could already feel the stress he’d endure mulling it all over. So instead, he focused on Menon’s question after tilting his head at the curtain shenanigans. “Well, this isn’t something I do with a group of friends but my bestie and I bake chai cookies together in the kitchen.” Diallo usually went along with this, no matter how many times Levi dragged him off to be his baking assistant.

Nordic Witch 10-17-2026 01:04 PM

At least Prof Kraetos didn't say no to her idea. He seemed like he could think about it and that made Tee happy. It was just an idea, after all. Muggles baked fine without magic so maybe they could too? The lesson kicked off with the first question and Tiana raised her hand quickly to answer a smile pursing her lips. "With a group of friends or my siblings we often play board games together. Muggle games like yatzy, ludo or trivia questions are popular since then we can play 4 or more together." The more the merrier.

Hmm, another baking reference. Looks like he will have to look into making it a reality. "Nothing like a homemade treat."

"That is another great activity to connect with others." Nodding with a knowing smile.

Kraetos waited for each response before continuing, "Those are fine ways to spend time with your friends and family. You'll often find an activity is the one of the quickest ways to connect with others. Whether those connections build or break off, varies." Now for the build up. "Today our focus in on board games and designing one."

"While we have games such as Quidditch, Gobstones, Wizard's Chess, and Exploding Snap. Non-magical people have board games and game consoles to connect with other people. The oldest traced board game, Senet, hailed from Egypt around 3,000 BC. These board games not only focus on connecting with others, but can be teaching tools. Some modern examples include Scrabble, focusing on words and Monopoly with budgeting and finances."

"Before we come up with our own board game, what are some important features attached to one? Alternatively, if you've played non-magical board games, your favorite one and how do they stand out from the previous examples?"

Levi Singh-Phora :: Hufflepuff

Levi would like a class on baking, yes. Hopefully it would allow them to bake their favourite treats and got to share them with everyone. His thoughts also floated towards his family. He thought about how much he loved spending time with his fathers, family pets and occasionally his sister; he still found it awkward to be around her but at least he was more confident about it now.

Board games!

That was one thing that he did with his dads, especially when he was younger. He remembered falling asleep during one Monopoly night because the game was so lengthy and he got extremely tired, especially after filling his stomach with cookies and other deliciousness.

The Hufflepuff barely had to ponder for too long on the questions, even if he was drawn to answering the first. Up went his hand. “They all are designed for recreation and fun, even those that are more on the intellectual side - like Scrabble. Board games are a great way to de-stress.”

Nordic Witch 10-18-2026 05:05 AM

While Levi suggested baking, Professor Kreatos mentioned other games you could use when spending time with friends or family that were both magical and non-magical. Tiana didn't think of quidditch, gobstones, exploding snap or even wizard chess which she thought was sooooooo boring because they felt like too obvious answers. The next question gave her some pondering before she raised her hand to answer "Board games should be fun, have some element that challenges the players minds, but also train traits like waiting for your turn, fin motor skills or just simply socializing with other people."

QueenPhoenix 10-19-2026 03:15 AM

Ayden grinned when Professor M played back with the initials only thing. He knew there was a reason he liked him - of course there was very few people that Ayden disliked, but that was a different story.

How did he spend time with family or friends? Well family was pretty easy - either watching or playing sports was a number one in the Diggory-Keighley household. He personally had an interest for anything hands-on.

Huh so they were creating their own board game? He was actually glad when Levi added on about the intellectual bit, because his mum was a big fan of educational games. The de-stress through? That could be debatable since depending on how competitive one was, board games could become a dangerous activity and more stressful.

"Probably should know how many people you need to play the game. Some games, card games in particular, could be geared for one person, but sometimes need at least two and sometimes games are better with more than three. Would also want to know an age range as well - is it suitable for a 4 year old? Do you want adults to have as much fun playing the game as kids? Because sometimes kids games could be boring for adults. Probably the broader the age range, the harder it will be to keep everyone interested"

"Right." Nothing else to add there.

"True, while the age rating can denote the challenge, it can be nostalgic for a grown adult to replay a childhood game. The age rating also serves as an indicator for safety with the game pieces."

Kraetos waited for each response before continuing, "When we look at each board game, we consider these factors. Will this be fun? Are the rules hard to decipher? Then when a game is decided, who gets to play which character?" Not so simple when it comes down to it. "Now today you'll get to design your own board game." Flipping the board to the other side, Menon revealed the guideline.
Quote:

Designing A Board Game

Purpose: What is the overall objective of the game?
How Many Players: Solo? Two? Up to 6? More?
Setting: Where does the game take place? An enchanted world?
Game Pieces: Does it require dice? game characters? Set pieces?
Colours: How to make it stand out? A specific colour theme?
Age Rating: Is this a complex game? Explore a specific theme? Or is it purely for safety?
Inspirations: What games or ideas influenced this design?

"Before you get started, think about what game you'd like to design. A game of strategy, a race to the finish, a mystery to solve, or something entirely different? You'll need to decide what the objective is, how players will take their turns, and what rules they'll need to follow." Gesturing the other basket. "Next to the crafts of supplies, we have some example board games, you can look for inspiration. There's no wrong set of creativity in mind as long as it's not a carbon copy." Moving on, "After you've worked out a plan, you can come up and grab some supplies. As you can see, the arts and crafts supplies available for you to use, including paper, cardboard, markers, and other materials to help bring your ideas to life."

"Now, since this Muggle Studies, your wands are not needed to bond your game together. Elmer's glue is your friend, not a snack. Along with scissors and tape, as covered previously." Kraetos gestured toward the other basket, "Now, let's see what you can come up with!"

OOC: Thank you waiting, everyone! Catch up posts are welcome if needed while you work to design your game. For any questions, feel free to ask Menon or VM/IM me. ^_^

Levi Singh-Phora :: Hufflepuff

Then Jenga, and other stressful games should be avoided in Levi’s opinion, especially if one’s intention alone was to just have a chill time. At least this was what he would do! As the class moved along, he couldn’t help but mull over his Professor’s words, especially the ones after all of the other students had volunteered their answers. He had never stopped to think about all of those questions, because yes, they were common and important when playing a board game. Maybe the next time he partook in one, he’d pay better attention. But…

They got to design their own game?!

VERY cool, Professor Menon! Now the presence of all the art supplies made sense. Also, let it be known that Levi suddenly got slightly overwhelmed when a barrage of ideas attacked him. One that stuck out? His creation MUST be centered around Pavitr Prabhakar and some adventure of his.

Taking Menon’s advice on how to get started, the rather keen Spider-Man Levi got started.

SPOILER!!: Levi’s brainstorming

Name: Spider-Man: Pavitr’s & Friends' Great Mumbattan Rescue

Game overview: A grand adventure, strategic race, and superhero rescue mission inspired by Pavitr Prabhakar {a version of Spider-Man} and his hometown. Players ‘swing’ through the fictional city of Mumbattan in {the very real} India to save citizens, take down villains, and protect the city.

Purpose/Objective/Setting: A team building game designed for recreation and to test the thinking abilities of the players; said players must collect four Web {literally shaped like spider webs} tokens by finishing missions across Mumbattan.

The four players are united by three main common goals:
  • Save civilians caught in danger throughout the city.
  • Complete missions, defeat obstacles, and collect clues.
  • Choose efficient routes, and decide when to use special abilities.
The player with the most Hero Points at the end earns the title of Mumbattan's Greatest Web Slinging Hero.

How to Earn Hero Points: {more tasks may be added as ideas come to me}
  • Rescue a civilians = 2 points
  • Complete a regular mission = 3 points
  • Help a teammate complete a mission =1 point
  • Defeat a villain = 4 points
  • Collect a Web token = 3 points

Game pieces:
  • Pavitr Prabhakar
  • Miles Morales
  • Peter Parker
  • Gwen Stacy

Tokens for the missions:
  • 10 Civilian Rescue tokens
  • 12 Web tokens
  • 12 Hero Point tokens

Other:
  • 30 Mission cards
  • 20 Web Challenge cards
  • 20 Chaos Cards
  • 1 die {six sided}
  • The game board {duh}

Colours: A variety! But mainly blue and red.

Age Rating: 13+

Inspirations: Spider-Man variants from across the Multiverse.

How to arrange the board:
  • Place all four game pieces at the rooftop's starting location.
  • Shuffle the Mission and Web Challenge decks respectively.
  • Give each player three Web tokens and place the remaining resources beside the board.

How to play:
To start, each player rolls the die. The player who rolls the highest number starts things off. If players roll the same number, they must each roll until a winner is determined. Each round, players take turns clockwise. On their turn, a player receives three action points to spend on the following actions.
  • Swing through the city = 1 action
    Move to an adjacent location connected by a web route. Some routes require a Web Challenge.
  • Rescue a civilian = 1 action
    Spend one Web token and collect a Civilian Rescue token. You also gain 2 Hero Points.
  • Complete a mission = 1 action
    Draw or resolve a Mission card at a designated location. Successful missions gain 1 Hero Point.
  • Help a teammate = 1 action
    Give one Web token to a player in the same location, or help with a mission that allows teamwork.
  • After each player's turn, draw a Chaos card and follow its instructions. These cards bring added fun to the games in the form of traffic jams, collapsing web routes, villain encounters or sudden emergencies.

Extra, Extra!
  • Web Challenges: roll the die when crossing a dangerous route. A result of 4 to 6 means the challenge is successful; a result of 1 to 3 means the player must spend one Web token or lose an action.
  • Villain encounters: some missions require two players to be at the same location to defeat a villain. Both must contribute one action.
  • Chai Corner: players may stop here to replenish two Web tokens, but doing so costs one action.
  • Heroic teamwork: if a player helps complete a mission, both players earn one Hero Point.

How to win:
The four players win collectively when they have collected all 12 Web tokens and all four pawns reach the edge of Mumbattan City. If they succeed, each player counts their Hero Points. The player with the most points becomes Mumbattan's Greatest Hero. Ties are considered victories also.

With his plan out of the way, Levi glanced over it. He didn’t think it was perfect, and he was sure there was bound to be some amount of conundrum if anyone were to actually play the game but… hey! Overall, he thought he had done a pretty swell job. Plus he has managed to sneak some chai fun in there. Now for the other part of today’s task.

The Hufflepuff hopped on over to the boxes, collecting as many supplies as he needed: cardboard of various colours, glitter {because what was life without shinies?, pencils, markers, glue, a pair of scissors among other materials. He decided that he’d use an entire piece of black cardboard for the city - that way, the buildings would be well highlighted since they’d be in other colours. Next up, roads were sketched out in white coloured pencil. Afterwards, he began the process of sketching, cutting and decorating those buildings - homes, skyscrapers, apartment buildings, work spaces. They were then stuck to the board. It was a lengthy process, and far from the neatest. Some of his buildings were even lopsided. If there was even the most minor earthquake there in Mumbattan, they would fall right over. Oops.

Red and blue tokens were created, the Web ones had spider webs {obviously} atop each. Even a die was put together, and a few cardboard squares were cut out to represent the decks. But the four player pieces? Well, Levi just liked to imagine that there would actually be tiny figurine versions of the four characters designed to their likeliness.

Kraetos spent time looking at each project people were working on. Moving over to Mr. Singh-Phora. "Good start." Before he moved on to the rest. Answering any questions, offering suggestions.. and correcting how to handle the scissors. Luckily, there wasn't any replicating of students eating glue from the popcorn for the alphabet from a previous lesson, ahem. After some time, at least one project had a full detailed plan. Some students decided to craft their instruments, figures, and board before writing out the plan. Whatever works, Menon thought. Giving everyone the chance to learn or prove him wrong on the order of operations.

Kraetos checked the clock eventually, "Goodness... Alright, everyone, we're near the end. I'd just about wrap up what you got. For homework, finish up or start writing the instructions for your game plan, even if you haven't finished or even started the design process." Adding, "We will continue this in our next lesson and potentially get to playing some of your designs within the week." Something to look forward to. "Class dismissed!" Last thing, "And be sure to return anything you used in the class in the appropriate basket." There were some things that should avoid the chance to be charmed out of the classroom.

OOC: Thank you stopping by, everyone! You're free to make one big catch up post and/or make your departures. Tomorrow the thread will close. You were all wonderful. ^_^

Nostalgic to play childhood games? Ayden made a face and wondered if his parents felt that way with playing games with him and his siblings or if they were secretly bored. Perhaps one day he'd see the point of the nostalgia but at fourteen years old, his vision was quite short-sighted.

Shouldn't really have been a surprise that they were designing their own board game - it would definitely explain the arts and crafts supplies. Only problem was that Ayden was feeling uninspired right now. But he really ought to get started...

Text Cut: Board game brainstorming

Designing A Board Game
Purpose: Defeating boredom
How Many Players: Solo or two
Setting: Enchanted world
Game Pieces: Dice
Colours:
Age Rating: 12 and up, most likely
Inspirations: Jumanji

He had filled in a few things, but didn't get too far in his thought process, as he had deliberated too long on some aspects like inspiration. Which meant finishing his board game for homework. Placing his notebook in his bag, he stood up to leave. "Thanks Professor M, see you next week."
