"Can't say I have," he replied when they were finally through and in an area filled with chair upon mismatched chair. "It's... um. Very... festive?" Nice Christmas lights. Dale took a seat on the sofa, actually on the butt-cushion part, and stretched out his legs with his lunch on his lap. He'd not failed to notice the differences in their lunches; Dale wouldn't usually have considered his choice of mozzarella sticks, ham and cheese sandwich, and chocolate cookies to be 'healthy', but it certainly contrasted with Lex's lunch quite well. "This place is full of surprises," he commented, taking a sip of his own coffee to check the temperature. "I daresay you've already discovered most of them? On your patrols, I mean?" |
Quote:
"Don't reckon they're in need of any more chairs." Her attention turned back to him at the inquiry about her patrols and the places she happened to run into. The smallest glance was given to his lunch and the way he stretched to occupy the entire couch. "Not most....not yet anyway. We do patrols by roster and I haven't been given specific levels yet--got down into Mysteries once, they have a death chamber, souls trying to suck you in and all that." Wait......."I dunno if I'm meant to tell you that...but you're MLE and this'll go into our records anyway." There were a couple good reasons why Lex couldn't be an Unspeakable...this was one of them. "Got to sit in on a court hearing last week, but that was mostly me forgetting I had patrols to do." Bright side? It was an interesting trial. |
;-; at my lateness Quote:
He listened to Lex even as he took a bite of his sandwich, nodding along as she spoke and-... raising an eyebrow at that little snippet about the Department of Mysteries. He couldn't help but smile. "No worries. I'm basically sworn to secrecy in my job-" scribe, secrets, lots of court things and that, you know "-so I won't go blabbing." But then, would anyone really admit to having intentions of going off and revealing state secrets? Even admitting it for a laugh? Dale hoped not, but he knew one idiot who might. "Ahh, court hearings," he repeated, a wistful look on his face as he peered off into the middle-distance. "I find myself in a lot of those. Mostly misdemeanors and official warnings, but occasionally there's something juicy going on." Ahem. But he was totes professional, so maybe it was a good idea to shut up at that point. More coffee was sipped. |
*gives squishy hug* Quote:
She was half way through a bite of her muffin when he mentioned something about being sworn to secrecy. "Whoa, really? I didn't know that? It's all those meetings and cases you have to sit in on, isn't it?" She couldn't remember if YATIs were sworn to secrecy on specific matters but it was starting to seem more like everyone was. It was good he wouldn't go blabbing though considering she didn't wanna be permanently banned from that level. And then he was going on about juicy court hearings. Lex quieted down, obviously expecting something epic but that was it, Dale had gone silent on her, effectively leaving her on a cliff hanger. "Well? You gonna tell me or what? I don't get to see nearly as many." Too busy sending the people to jail in the first place--if only, really she was just walking the Mystery and leaving with bruises from the day's training. No regrets though. Auror life would be worth it. "It's only fair." Nodnod. |
<333 Quote:
"Well, yeah," he said, with a shrug of his shoulder. "Like, it's in the job contract, sort of thing. No blood oaths or Unbreakable Vows or anything like that." Dale had a sudden mental image of himself letting slip this detail or that and immediately discovering that, say, every time he opened his mouth he let out a great squawk or siren noise instead. That seemed like the sort of thing that might happen. Dale grinned at Lex's eagerness then, even let out a little laugh before taking another bite of his sandwich. Heh. How to put this. "I may not be under an Unbreakable Vow, but I wouldn't be surprised if the job contract I signed had some kind of sneaky enchantment on it. One wrong word and I might..." he scrabbled around the recesses of his mind for some kind of creative possibility "... end up letting out a banshee cry whenever I open my mouth." Yeah, actually... Dale didn't know a whole lot about Rainey but he wouldn't be surprised if that happened. And he wouldn't want to face the man if it did, either. Merlin, no thank you. "I think I'll stick with my own dulcet tones." But really, maybe if there weren't that sliiiight possibility, he'd probably have dished the dirt, in a manner of speaking. |
I suck, it's official >< Quote:
While Dale explained his contract concerns, Lex finished off her muffin and reached for the ham and cheese from the bag. Thing is...the more she listened was the more interested she became.... "D'you really think it'll happen? Like they actually rig stuff like in our Department? I'd have thought something more deadly because...well...MLE and all but it might not be so bad, even if only to see if it works." Lex scooted a little closer but remained planted on the arm of the chair, hazel eyes taking him in with a new curiosity. "Naturally we gotta try this now. It's the only real thing to do now that we've thought about it." Or well...now that she'd been told the possibility of it all. He should find this just as fascinating because it was. "Worst case scenario, something DOES go wrong and we gotta make a trip down to Accidents and Catastrophes to fix it before the boss finds out." But Rainey was always busy with something else. What were the odds he'd go looking for one of his type-y scribe people? Even more, what were the odds he would go looking for Dale specifically when there were others employed. Fool proof. They had to. Yes? Yes. |
Oak Tree! While the Ministry is busy about the International Youth Quidditch, Mordred took the opportunity to use it as cover to sneak out of his cubicle and into the Underground Coffee Club to work on his research about Dragon Coffee. Maybe he'd strike some inspiration here as well. Indie spots and creations within are typically so good and so underrated. Also, he sent an informal note to one Oakey Richard Gunter up in A&C to meet him there. There's a lot to catch up on, and to be honest, he misses the guy. It may not be obvious, but Mordred does care for him. Especially now that he's heard rumours about...Ariana having a miscarriage. All are just gossip for now. Hopefully, the sad news is just a mean joke to trip everyone close to the couple. Oakey may not be aware, but the dragonologist still kept him as his best friend. And as he considers himself his best bud, he ought to know...things and will help him in anyway that he can. |
Quote:
As he pulled the tapestry aside and entered he wasn't really expecting anyone to be there, seeing as this was a rather conspicuous place that only few knew about. Thomas gave the other man a curt nod of his head and wandered around until he found a chair that looked safe-ish. He tapped it with his wand, scanning for any magic before taking a seat. One can never be too cautious. |
Quote:
Whether Oakey decides to show up or not, Mordred was going to stay in place and go with his readings further. The place was rather...condusive for researching...and passing the time. Crossing his legs, the dragonologist brought the cup to his lips once more and eyed the newcomer. "Do you come here often?" He was curious, obviously. He seemed to be so acquainted with this place that he had to check if there was black magic on his chair, like...it was most likely cursed or something. So far, he was feeling okay. His chair was safe, thank Merlin. |
Quote:
He acknowledged that the other person in the room talked to him, but he allowed himself to finish his ritual before answering the man's question with a curious smirk "I do, I actually work on this level." he leaned back on his chair bringing his cup to his lips and taking a sip. "How about you? I'm not sure I've seen you around here" he realized then that him walking around the room, picking out a chair and checking for dark magic might have looked.. curious to him. But, he didn't know these chairs had glued together bottoms in the past - the sick notion of a prank. Ungluing bottoms was not a funny thing. |
Quote:
"I honestly thought you were from A&C." he said coolly, giving the man a slight smirk. "Mysteries, yes?" Mordred never understood their level. They pretty much live up to their Department's name. With a nod, the dragonologist sat straight on his chair. "I don't come here often, but I just might." he said, leaning forward and offered his hand to the man, "Mordred Mordaunt, Dragonologist from Magical Creatures." he purposefully left the word 'junior' because he hated the title. It made him feel inferior. Not that his seniors, William and Tancred bullied him on a daily basis. They were in fact, great colleagues, of which he would like to become some day. It's just that, he doesn't feel a junior dragonologist anymore. With his recent record in the ministry, he ought to be at least in his senior level already. |
Quote:
"Wouldn't mind, but I find what I do much more enticing to be honest" Thomas smirking back at him, playfully, taking another sip form his coffee. Thomas placed his mug again on the table and shook the hand that was being offered to him "Thomas Black, Unspeakable" . He rested back on his chair again. The place was quiet and serene, just like he enjoyed it. "You're welcome to come as many times as you like, I'd say. I'm just not used to see people in here. Most of my colleagues find it unsettling and totally not worth the risk. Some of these chairs have been the object of some nasty prank-spells." again, the image of glued bottoms and growing pork tails flooded his mind and even though he wanted to laugh at the sight, the work they had been through after, discovering who did it wasn't something he found humor in anymore. "So, Dragons... how's that like? They're magnificent creatures. My son is completely fascinated with them." |
Quote:
The 26 year old sat back and tapped the table with his fingers right after the introductions were over. Thomas Black, Unspeakable. Well, isn't it his lucky day today? His family knew a lot of Unspeakables, but were of course contained to his older peers. Everything was marked Classified with these people, and to be honest, Mordred could not wait for the day to meet one. The dragonologist's inner Slytherin stirred from the deepest pit of his soul. The Unspeakables are dead useful. A genuine grin graced the young man's face as he gave Thomas a nod, "You better get used to seeing me around here. This place reminds me so much of my old Hogwarts house. Just the right atmosphere for me to get my research going." Mordred did a quick sweep of his surroundings and tilted his head to the side. "I say these chairs add character to the place." And if he did get a pig's tail sprouting from his bottom, then he's off to prove his capability of doing a counter-jinx on himself. And now...to a conversation that he can command any time of the day. "They are never boring. There's always something up with them. Different breeds, different temperaments, endless possibilities." Mordred quickly took a sip of his coffee and continued to talk to the man, "I'm currently doing a study about dragon dung, and how its powerful essence could be infused in our everyday diet. Like...coffee." Brilliant stuff. "Oh, is he? You should bring him to Level 4 some time. I've got 3 retrieved dragon eggs that are under observation. I'm giving it a month until it finally hatches. Should be a treat for him. Is he in Hogwarts now?" Maybe his son isn't so little anymore, no? |
Quote:
"Let me guess... Slytherin? " he chuckled. Ah, another fellow snake? This was wonderful, there weren't many in his department. At home Andi was a Ravenclaw and Wes was a Gryffindor and seeing as one was his wife and the other his son, he had no chance in displaying his Slytherin pride around the house. "At last, someone who sees the resemblance between this room's and the dungeon's atmosphere!" Again, Thomas grinned, knowingly "Yes the chairs certainly add.. character to the place" he snorted Ah-ha! Snort, that sounds like a pig! now Mordred must think he's insane. Not far from the truth, everyone has to have a little of insaneness inside, specially if you work with hyper classified subjects completely, and sometimes literally, out of this world matters. "Sorry, just remembered something." he chuckled. No need to worry the young man. He seemed to be doing fine in his chair and he knew they had localized most of the chairs. His own personal check up happened out of pure habit. Thomas listened to Mordred speak about his work with interest trying to memorize what he was saying which he was sure would be a delight for Wes. Specially the coffee part. He would totally have a blast if he ever heard about dung infused coffee. "Oh, I've heard about that in the elevator, a young lady from your level was talking about it with a friend. It does sound rather interesting, despite the whole, dung infusion part. Would you reckon that some people would oppose to drink it because of that?" Yes it did sound brilliant, and Thomas mentally added that to him list about this person. And then he offered to let Wes visit level 4 and see 3 dragon eggs and that alone gave him the hero statues. It was sore spot in his Father curriculum that Wes never got to write "What does my daddy do" compositions for kindergarten. But with that he would totally score a few Daddy points with him. "He's at Hogwarts now yes, he's a forth year Gryffindor" he stated proudly, his blue eyes shinning "and I'm afraid I'll totally take you up on that offer, he'll love it. I don't get many chances to bring him to work with me, you see?" he gesticulated "Not really child material my field.". |
SPOILER!!: Thomas! Ah. Now, things are more interesting. Who would’ve thought that this guy was a former Slytherin too? The man earned himself a grin from the dragonologist. He was obviously satisfied by this information. An Unspeakable, and a Snake? It really is his lucky day. “Indeed. No wonder we feel at home almost instantly.” It was just like the good old times, wasn’t it? The darkness of the place made Mordred’s mind more alert than when he’s at Level 4. A slight smirk graced his young face however, when Thomas let out a snort. Even if his chair is enchanted, or powered by black magic, he was sure his protective rune stones inside his trousers’ pocket were doing its counter charm. Mordred is never the flashy type of pureblood wizard. He’s usually the reserved, and quiet one, albeit the most observant. He is the type to make sure that he isn’t in trouble without waving his wand around for everyone to see. Always vigilant and ready to strike like a Snake, without the pomp and circumstance. The news about his research reaching parts of the ministry made him perk up slightly in his seat. Oh? Has it really reached some sort of interest among his colleagues? Good. They can all be taste testers once the invention is ready. And of course, he had been expecting that question. “I cannot force such innovation to everyone, so yes, there will be some who will hold reservations.” And honestly, they are the boring ones. “Not everyone is highly educated in the science of Dragonology and Magizoology in general. Secondly, not everyone has an exquisite tongue to taste such powerful tonic infused drink.” Was Thomas one of the...mediocre wizards out there? Hopefully, Mordred is wrong with his assumption. Never in his life did he imagine that he is actually capable of sharing his knowledge of Dragons to the younger generation. As an only child, and with an aristocratic upbringing, Mordred is used to being stingy with his things...and acquired knowledge. He’d always thought that the others are never worthy of what he knew. That gradually changed when he met his fellow Slytherins, and other students his age when he was in Hogwarts. Sharing the knowledge only made him thirstier for more. He was always in constant pursuit of information, getting the feeling that he was steadily, and slowly becoming a Ravenclaw. The only driving force that ties his feet to his Slytherin roots is his ambition to master all dragons. “Interesting. Most of the Gryffindors I knew tipped their energies toward duelling, and chased the dream of becoming an Auror.” Mordred got his almost empty coffee cup, and downed the remaining contents. “I can give you a tentative schedule soon. I will have to check with Harmony first if I can bring the two of you inside the laboratory. If not,” he shrugged continuing, “you can stay by the work cubicles and you can view it from there.” Mordred isn’t promising anything, but with Harmony’s positive attitude, he was sure the plan is a go. |
Quote:
The fact that Mordred turned out to be a fellow Slytherin made Thomas’ mind relax a little. Maybe he’s all right. Thomas wanted to believe Andi’s words that people weren’t all bad, but he wouldn’t help being suspicious and cautious of strangers since after all these years in the Department of Mysteries the most valuable lesson he learnt had been: better safe than sorry. Thomas grinned as the Dragon subject seemed to please the young man and he dove into conversation. “I won’t lie to you and say that the notion of how this drink is infused isn’t quite…strange” he picked his words carefully, he did not want to be misinterpreted “but I’m also aware that this, as any scientific experience, is a strictly regulated and controlled experience, right? I see no reason not to try it. Plus the after effects really intrigue me. I mean we all know about the properties of Dragon’s blood, but what do you think will be the effects of this infusion?”. Yes he wouldn’t mind trying the drink, he enjoyed coffee and even though Dragonology and Magizoology were fields he had little knowledge about, he was intrigued by the effects this powerful tonic infused drink might have. And in addition to that he was reasonably sure that there were more efficient and…clean ways of killing someone inside the MoM than with a dung infused drink. “I’d say Wes is a bit atypical since he was brought up by a Ravenclaw and a Slytherin.” he chuckled “Guess we rubbed off on him some other traits”. Yes, he knew all about the stereotypes that revolved around each house. Luckily for him Wes didn’t fit in any. He had his own mind and ideas about what he wanted to do with life. But he was dead loyal to those he loved, Thomas guessed that was the Gryffindor vein in his son. “Whatever you can arrange I’ll be in your debt Mordred, you have my word” and having a debt to collect from an Unspeakable often proved to be useful. |
Quote:
Ah yes. The joy of questions. Mordred is quite prepared for such queries since this has been his study ever since he started in the Ministry. “Of course. This is just the initial study backed up with information that we already know about dragons. And just like the responsible adults that we are, the study, for now, is strictly for research purposes. I dare not try it out on humans, given that I have only scratched the tip of the iceberg, so tests will be limited to...subjects that are...expendable.” Such as rats. Rats are made for that, yes? “The essence would act as the catalyst to rejuvenate the subject’s current state. Nutrients found in the food we eat, and liquids that we drink find its way in our bloodstream to help us function as soon as the initial stages of digestion is done. This is the same for the essence, only it is faster...and mostly effective to those who have wizarding blood.” It was all simple logic to be honest, but the process to get the essence in its most intact form would be the challenge. Too much extraction processes would weaken the magical properties of said substance. For some reason however, Mordred was able to pick up something from his conversation with Thomas regarding his son. Is he not close to his offspring? Daddy issues perhaps? “If I am going to be honest with you Thomas, it doesn’t matter where your son was sorted. It’s all about the upbringing, don’t you think?” Merlin. There are kids that are beyond rude and obnoxious, that Mordred has to completely turn around and be blind to it. If he had it his way, he would’ve hexed each and everyone of them. Thank the heavens for blessing him with a wife who could calm him down and bring back his rationale. “The houses are simply there to shape their best traits further, and be a better version of themselves in the end. Although I belong in a long line of Slytherins myself, I still consider my upbringing as the biggest deciding factor for me to end up in the Snake house.” Mordred may still be considered young, but he has given that opinion of his, much thought. He also has a cousin who constantly asked him why he ended up being in Slytherin too when he stood out like a sore thumb. The dragonologist grinned at the man, and gave him a nod. There was no harm sharing his knowledge with the younger generation and adults alike. He felt really good about it. It was...gratifying in so many ways. And although he’s going to do it without asking anything in return, Mordred was sure that he was able to forge a new bond of brotherhood with this man. He would know of course. They are, after all, former Slytherins. |
Quote:
He nodded as he heard the younger man speak. He wasn’t going to interject or act like he knew what he was talking about because his knowledge on animals such as dragons was indeed very small. He knew which end breathed fire and which end had spikes and that was - most of the times - enough to keep him alive in the rare occasions he had to face a beast like that. But he knew about magically empowered concoctions and the might of the wizarding blood and bonds. He tapped his chin a few times in thought. How to comment on this matter without giving too much away? “That is all rather interesting, I’ll give you that, no doubt. You should talk with my my department head sometime, maybe we can help you with your research. Provide some tools?” After all they did have all sorts of unusual equipment, with the proper authorization it was ok to share. Maybe they could use the Time Chamber to extract the essence while preserving it’s properties? Yes, it was all about the upbringing, yet he sadly he felt like that was something Andi deserved most credit for, not him. “Totally agree. Though I still like to tease him for being a Gryffindor when he’s was the biggest scaredy cat during his first year.” he chuckled “I mean, Gryffindors are supposed to be brave and have some sort of hero complex right?” he said with a smirk. He knew those stereotypes where rubbish but it still amused him to tease his son mercilessly. Thomas, liked to consider himself more like the Get-the-Job-Done-No-Matter-What type. Which coincidentally was in line with the description of his house "Those cunning folk use any means, to achieve their ends" or something like that right? He delivered his work, completed his missions, all very neat, all very clean. Never in 16 years had he returned empty handed. He particularly enjoyed working in the special rooms that existed inside the department where one could be stranded in time, floating endlessly... |
Jo! *starts to wrap things up because!!!* :D "You would have to ask my cousin. Either he's just pulling my leg...or he actually saw one but not the full adult merperson. Probably an offspring who wandered too far." It was possible. Certain wizards and witches can talk to them in mermish...so those creatures can get out of the shadow if needed. As much as Mordred wanted to delve into the subject more, it was however, a thing of the past. It's not as if he can sashay into the Slytherin Common Room again to investigate and observe. Oh, and was Thomas returning the favour now? Well, not quite since he said that he should talk to his Department Head. Merlin. What is up with that anyway? He'd been talking to 3 Chiefs, including his own this year. "That will certainly give my research a new depth. I've been meaning to take my experiment into an unorthodox study...and I think Mysteries would help me get that." Ah yes. The power of Slytherin brotherhood. No wonder Mordred felt assured with this man. Mordred let out a soft chuckle at the mention of being a first year. He can still remember his own years ago. "That is totally understandable. I could've passed as a Gryffindor as to how I dealt with things in my first year. But I suppose ambition and determination pushed me to the green side."So yes, stereotyping is out of the question." he said nodding. As much as he wanted to converse further with Thomas, time is no longer in his favour. "I'm afraid I have to go ahead. I have three eggs to observe, and a Department Head to talk to. I will get back to you as soon as I can once I get Harmony's approval." he said standing up. "I will send you a schedule...and your badges for your laboratory visit." he said, offering his hand to the man for the first time, "It is a pleasure to have finally met a fellow Slytherin." |
Oh, well that made more sense, a family prank of some sort. Though merpeople sometimes did get out of water and pursued muggles and wizards - they were, after all, the source for all those fairy tales things. "In fact, I should probably talk with them first about what you've just told me about your project and expose my ideas of how we can help you... lay the groundwork for you, yeah?" that was more reasonable. After all he was the one with the insight of all their tools and areas that could help Mordred's work, so there was actually no point in him going to request help without actually know what sort of help they were able to provide him with. Thomas stood up at the same time as Mordred did, shaking the man's hand with joy. He turned out to be a rather pleasant surprise and Thomas was glad that eh decided to take a break on the Mismatched Seating area. "Sure, whenever you can Mordred, I'll go have a word with my people in a bit too. I'll send you a memo when they're ready to receive you" he gave the young man a lopsided grin as he said it was a pleasure to meet a fellow Slytherin "Likewise mate". Thomas stood in his spot watching him leave thinking on how exactly he and his department would be able to help Mordred's research and how excited Wes would be once he discovered his father would be taking him to watch Dragon Eggs. After some time he too had to return to work, so that's what he did, but now without calmly glancing around the room, checking that nothing was left behind or that nothing was behind him. |
Ali! Alex hadn't been to the underground coffee...place lately, and he was really REALLY craving a good, hot cup of coffee now that the weather was getting colder. He'd started drinking coffee a lot more now that he was working so much...it was starting to become an addiction, he was pretty sure. Not that he cared, really. It was tasty, especially once you added syrups and sugar and all that other fun stuff. Now to find a seat and read over this new debriefing of events going on in DERP this month...there were a few to chose from, but they were all so SMALL. Alex was not a small guy. He was TALL. Lots of legs. He sat on a stool which...was a little odd, but at least his legs didn't look completely frog like on this one. |
SPOILER!!: Alex! <3 It had been so busy over the last few weeks that Megan decided to take some time by herself. She knew she could count on Kai to have a good time. Or even Logan or Zhenya but she figured some time alone wouldn't hurt. Don't get her wrong. Everything was going great in life especially with Yuna but she jut needed some 'me' time. Clutching a steaming mug of coffee, she wandered over to the mismatched chairs. There were other employees milling around so Megan diverted from the crowd to ease into a faded green chair. "This is more like it,'' she muttered. She felt very comfortable and at peace. That is, until she noticed the guy seated close by. Hmm, should she move? Or would it come off as rude? "Mind some company?'' The words were out of her mouth before she could properly make up her mind. |
Quote:
Alex felt like all of this stuff in the newest briefing had already been covered in the most recent meeting they had, but that didn't stop him from underlining all the important stuff with a green quill just to be sure he didn't miss anything. Alex always liked to triple check these things - just in case. Because it would be SUPER embarrassing if he didn't know about something the next time it was brought up and he looked stupid amongst his colleagues. He was still trying to fit in and act like he knew everything about plants...it wasn't at all true, but you know. He had to do it. He jumped slightly when someone started talking to him, and he realized that she was asking if she could join him. Erm...ok? It wasn't all THAT intriguing, this briefing, and he probably should try and like...socialize. Right? "Oh, um...yeah. That's fine," he said with a chuckle, shifting himself slightly in his chair so that he was facing her more. "I guess I could use a distraction from this paperwork...stuff," he added, trying to break into conversation and probably just making awkward small talk. |
SPOILER!!: Alex! <3 Uhhh, had she disturbed the dude? The moment she had questioned him, Megan regretted it. She hadn't failed to notice his jumpiness either. What was the matter with him? "Everything alright there?'' He must be one of the newbies, the blond thought. Even though Newbie isn't exactly the right word since it was quite a few months since the Ministry had last hired. "Paperwork is boring, don't you think?'' Megan raised her own cup and took a sip. Yum! The coffee was just perfect! The right temperature with the right amount of cream and everything else. "Let's leave that for now. Which department are you from?'' He was definitely not from Accidents and Catastrophes. |
Quote:
"Oh, no, it's nothing. Just too much caffeine today, I think," Alex told her with a chuckle. That was a lot better than I'm a complete wreck of a human being which was the first thought that generally came to mind when people noticed his awkwardness. Here he thought the job at the Ministry had been helping with his nervousness, and instead it was making it worse. Or so he thought. Probably talking to people would help, he supposed, and he hadn't done that very much yet sooo...yeah. Time to start? "Environmental Protection. I just started there," he told her with a smile. "And you?" he asked. Definitely not from his department. He knew everyone's face, even if he was still learning their names, and he was certain he hadn't seen her around. |
