If ever a movie should be redefined for the high-definition world of Blu-ray clarity, it's Baz Luhrmann
Moulin Rouge! The film is a burst of colours and extravaganza - though that does merit to the fact that the plot revolves around a young stage performer who falls in love with a writer. Admittedly, the weakest part of the film may be its plot, and some of the performances by the actors, but the chemistry between the leads, played by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, is palpable. While some of the dance-and-song routines are cheesy, even a couple of numbers with the lovebirds, there's no denying that McGregor's Christian would do anything for Kidman's Satine. Then again, just about any man in France would.
The remastered Blu-ray version is dazzling, as though you're sitting before a live cabaret show, with big song numbers and even bigger costumes and dance routines. You're meant to pity Christian, as he's so madly in love with a woman who does want him back, but at the same time has to take care of herself and company financially, so she has to lure a rich benefactor to become her lover.
Beyond the grand music numbers, there is the love story between Satine and Christian, which will never work. Satine wants more than love, and poor Christian can not provide for her financially. Plus, to add a bit of melodrama to the mix, Satine is dying from a fatal disease, so that leaves Christian far more angst-ridden than possible. At points, it gets a bit difficult to sympathise for either character because it feels as though one tragedy after another is thrown in their way, but in the end, you do feel sorry for both parties involved. It's a love story gone very wrong, on an intensely vivid cabaret scale.
