Featherbrained & Fearless (question mark?)
|
Bria's breath puffed in front of her like little clouds as she dashed across the snow-blanketed meadow, the chill nipping at her cheeks but her excitement keeping her warm from the inside out. Her boots crunched over the thin crust of frost with every hurried step, and she glanced back only once to make sure no one was following Bria scooted forward with a grin and knocked the board a couple of time. "Tiny but mighty! That's what mum always says anyway," she laughed before wedging her gloved fingers under the edge of the board beside Avalon’s hand and braced one boot against the frame. "C’mon, you old creaky beast, let us in! We’ve got nests to find and mysteries to solve!" Bria yanked and leaned back, pushing against the board with her foot and getting nowhere fast. "Silly us. We need to to this together. On three?" |
Bria's comment about the shack sounding haunted sent a chill crawling down Avalon's spine. Or maybe that was just the wind? It WAS cold out, even with her layers and scarf and gloves, and even though they were close to the shack now, it didn't offer much protection from the wind cutting through. Despite that, she returned Bria's grin. "Ooohh, I like that! Tiny but mighty!" That could be their catchphrase! Though hopefully not forever. Avalon was very much hoping that she would hit a growth spurt soon and become TALL. But then she could be tall and mighty! Or something else that sounded better. She didn't have time to think up a better phrasing right now. Because she had a board to tear off. And...and, yeah, it probably WOULD be better if they timed it together. Thank Merlin Bria was smart. "Right, that's a good idea," Avalon agreed, taking her hands off the board for a moment to flex her fingers, which hurt a little from her unsuccessful attempt so far. "Okay, ready!" She grabbed the edge of the board again, planting her feet to brace herself. "One...two...THREE." |
"THREE!" Bria echoed with gusto while she YANKED with all her twiggy arms' might. The board gave way with a splintery CRACK, and Bria squealed—half from surprise, half from glee—as the momentum flung her backward into a somersault. She landed in a poof of snow with a soft fwump, her knitted hat askew, pompom looking like a snowball atop her head, and her cheeks red from cold and laughter. For a second she just laid there, blinking up at the sky, a bit winded but absolutely thrilled―but it wasn't too long before she shot up from the snow like a Jack-in-the-Box. "Holy harpies! Avalon! It worked!” she giggled and brushed snow off her coat. "Okay, ow, but also...SOOO worth it." She glanced up at the now partially open doorway with sparkling eyes as though a massive herd of hippogriffs had all just bowed to her at the exact same time. The blonde struck a heroic little pose from where she sat in the snow before scooting to her feet again. "Let’s goooo—before we get mistaken for yeti." You know, because they were both a little more than lightly powdered in snow now. |
Avalon's shriek joined Bria's as she was flung backward, landing on her back with an "OOF!" and rolling a couple times until the layers of snow stopped her. She laid there for a moment, panting to catch her breath, and more than a little surprised that they'd actually succeeded. Once she saw Bria sit up though, Avalon did the same, finally taking a look at the opening they had created. It- It really had worked!!! "We did it!!!!" A part of her had thought the board would be too tough for them, so she couldn't help the big grin that instantly appeared. They really were mighty after all! She flexed her slightly sore fingers, eyeing the doorway and then casting a quick glance down at herself. Oh, wow, yeah, she probably DID look like a yeti right now with her clothes all covered in snow. A really tiny yeti. But maybe that was good! Maybe if there WAS something scary inside, maybe it would be scared of yetis, and they could scare it, instead of it scaring them! And then it would be safe and would be a great hangout for them every time they came to Hogsmeade, and everyone would think they were so cool, and they would be THE most popular kids at school. Seemed like a good plan to her! And so without further ado, Avalon scrambled to her feet and ran for the opening. "Last one in's a smelly yeti!" |
Bria sat up with a gasp and a cough of laughter, snow stuck to her hat and the tip of her nose. "We actually did it!" she squealed, flopping back dramatically into the snow and powdering herself even more in white. They could dub themselves Team Yeti...or The Yetiettes! But, for now, "We’re little legends!" Avalon’s cheer made her giggle even more and she brushed a chunk of snow off her sleeve with exaggerated flair. "I wanted to believe wholeheartedly in our strength but, honestly, I wasn't so sure we were going to be able to pull it off," she admitted, wide-eyed with giddy awe. "But nope! We’re pint-sized powerhouses!" She rolled to her knees, giving her gloves a brisk shake before pushing herself up and grinning even wider. At the 'smelly yeti' threat, Bria gasped. "Oi! Not me! My shampoo smells like wildflower honey and peach!" She took off after Avalon with a delighted shrill shriek, her boots skidding a little on the snowy wood as she scrambled through the gap they'd made. "Hope the ookie spookies and wigglewing tweeties like company!" she giggle, breathless and gleeful, as she disappeared inside after Avalon ― and, yeah, her friend had won the foot race this time but they were totally both winners in the end! |
