Default Greenhouses

The seven greenhouses of Hogwarts are a bridge between the castle and the magnificent grounds surrounding it. They are home to a wide variety of plants which, in the cases of Greenhouses 1-5, are organized neatly in various pots and grow boxes. If you look closely at the plants, you may occasionally find a name tag listing not the scientific name of the plant, but common names such as "Reginald" or "Phillip." In the cases of Greenhouses 6 and 7 the plants are more haphazardly placed and chaotically growing. Professor Lillian has yet to spend more time in those areas to tidy up, so please bear with the mess for a bit.

In each greenhouse there are shelves and cabinets containing empty pots, tools, and other basic necessities for working with plants. There are tables throughout and a large sink in one corner of each greenhouse, along with a compost pile behind Greenhouse 1 for unwanted clippings.

Greenhouses 1, 2, 3, and 6 are open for student use. Permission is required for access to 4, 5, and 7.

OOC: Here's a basic guide of what you might find in each greenhouse; please remember to play realistically based on your character's age and skill level!
Credit for the layout of the Greenhouses goes to previous Herbology Professors: BanaBatGirl, kayquilz, Shanners, Samia, MadAlice, and Holmesian Feline.

Freya sat cross-legged atop an overturned crate near a bench crowded with potted plants, her Herbology textbook spread open across her lap. A roll of parchment rested beside her, already littered with notes, corrections, and several frustrated scribbles she had long since crossed out.

Herbology was not impossible. That was what she kept reminding herself.

But it just simply wasn't Defence Against the Dark Arts.

DADA made sense. Dark creatures, defensive spells, practical applications—those things came naturally. Plants, however, had an irritating tendency to blur together in her memory. Every time she thought she had finally memorized the identifying features of one species, another appeared with nearly identical leaves and a completely different set of hazards.

Freya frowned down at a diagram.

"Ovate leaves..." she muttered to herself, comparing the illustration to a specimen growing nearby. "Or was it heart-shaped? No. Ovate."

The plant seemed unimpressed by her efforts.

A slender tendril brushed against the edge of her parchment, curling lazily around her quill. Freya gently unwound it and nudged it back toward its pot.

"Don't start."

Sighing, she returned to her notes. Turning another page, she studied a section on magical plant life cycles. While she was preoccupied, the vine responded by reaching for her again.

The lanky sixth year had been in the greenhouse long enough that evidence of it had begun accumulating on his person. There was soil beneath his fingernails and faint smear of dirt sat along one cheek where he had absentmindedly pushed a some stray blond hair that had fallen out of his poorly constructed ponytail ― he was still green when it came to such hair techniques ― from his face with the back of his hand. One of his sleeves was rolled unevenly to the elbow and a new collection of seeds, bark fragments, pebbles, and leaves occupied his pockets.

In short, he looked entirely at home.

And it had been a very, very long time since that had happened.

Some days ― a majority of days ― still felt like trying to coax growth from soil he'd spent months convinced was barren. The confidence that had once come so naturally around plants remained patchy in places, returning in slow growing shoots rather than flourishing like a puffapod.

But between Professor Hawkins' quirky encouragement, Professor Amstern's steadfast mentorship, and UncleProfessor Cox's stubborn refusal to let him disappear into himself entirely, Herbology had begun to feel like somewhere he belonged again.

Like a perennial testing the air after a hard winter, uncertain whether spring could really be trusted.

But the calmness, the brushes of confidence around his flimsy edges, were why he nearly walked past the fifth year without noticing her. His attention, more specifically, had been occupied by a tray of seedlings balanced carefully in his arms until movement caught his eye.

A vine. Specifically, a vine attempting what appeared to be a determined courtship of her quill.

Nyle slowed... then stopped.

The girl herself looked striking against the sea of green surrounding her. Not delicate in the way some flowers were...but like foxglove growing from a crack in stone or perhaps a sea holly standing stubbornly against coastal winds.

Meanwhile, the vine reached for her again and he watched as the tendril curled eagerly towards her sleeve.

"It likes you."

The observation escaped before he could reconsider whether interrupting her studying as a sensible idea or not. Which, naturally, meant he regretted the interruption on his next breath and the tray slightly against his hip and trying to make his towering frame fold in on itself.

"Erm."

Excellent recovery. He really needed to learn to just stop talking.

"I think it's just bored."

Freya looked up from her notes at the unexpected voice, one hand still holding her quill hostage from the vine's latest attempt at theft. The tendril, apparently encouraged by having gained an audience, became quite yare and bolder in its movement.

Only then did she properly register who had spoken.

She'd seen him around often enough to physically recognize him, though she wasn't sure they'd ever actually spoken. At the moment, he appeared as though he'd been personally adopted by the greenhouse itself. There was dirt on his cheek, dirt on his hands, and enough in his pockets to suggest as much.

Her gaze flicked from the tray of seedlings balanced in his arms back to the vine currently inching toward her textbook.

"It's plotting something." She was almost certain that plants could sense weakness. "I wouldn't be surprised if it knows I'm revising."

Freya glanced down at the page she'd been studying and suppressed a sigh. The diagram seemed even less cooperative now than it had five minutes ago. Closing the book and scooting it several inches to the side, she tilted her head toward the vine.

"What is it, anyway?" The question escaped before she could stop it. "Honestly, at this point I'd have better odds identifying a xeranthemum." Never mind the fact that the mentioned plant was what had been featured in the diagram.

The vine responded by curling lazily around the edge of her textbook, almost as though attempting to volunteer an answer. Freya stared at it.

"...See? Plotting."

Nyle's attention followed the vine as it curled around the edge of her textbook with all the determination of kneazle looking to settle on a book you were trying to read because they wanted attention you were not providing it.

"Well," he said, adjusting the tray of seedlings against his hip as a soft laugh escaped him, "maybe they are trying to help you turn the pages...help you with that revision."

Or, perhaps more likely, hindering her research so she couldn't identify it.

He stepped closer, lowering the tray onto a nearby bench before crouching beside the pot. The vine immediately redirected its attention toward him, a tendril reaching for his rolled sleeve. Nyle gently intercepted it with practiced ease, retrieving a twig from his pocket and handing it to the vine to hold on to instead while being careful not to damage the young shoot as he guided it away.

At close range, the identification came quickly. The leaves were the first clue, though not the best one. Ovate, with just enough variation to confuse students trying to memorize diagrams. The silvery veining was more reliable. So were the tendrils.

His hand hovered over the foliage as he pointed out individual features, his voice growing more confident the longer he focused on the plant instead of the conversation.

"The leaves are ovate, like your textbook says, though honestly some of the illustrations make them look completely different. The hint of silver veining is a better indicator." He carefully lifted one of the leaves so she could see. "And the tendrils branch in pairs. That's usually what I look for first."

The vine chose that moment to curl around his wrist. Nyle looked down at the plant fondly and shoved his hand into his pocket for something else to distract them with.

"It's a young Venomous Tentacula."

There was none of his earlier hesitation in the identification. Herbology was one of the few subjects where certainty came naturally. Plants were just...easier.

"It isn't particularly dangerous yet," he continued. "Mostly curious. They spend a lot of time investigating things when they're young. Movement especially... which explains the fascination with your quill since you were, well, writing and that movement drew its attention."

The mention of xeranthemum tugged at the edge of Nyle's memory as he remembered another girl bent over a book, her voice animated as she shared what she knew of xeranthemums ― how they symbolized eternity and remembrance. The memory faded as quickly as it had appeared, leaving behind a familiar ache that he had learned not to prod too closely in recent months.

"To be fair," Nyle said, a small smile appearing as he glanced up from the vine, "xeranthemums are much easier to identify ― the flowers do most of the work for you. And those papery flowerheads look almost dried even when they're healthy. They really are the sort of plant you can recognize from the flowers alone."

Freya's eyes followed each feature as he pointed it out, her attention gradually shifting from the vine's attempted theft to the young Venomous Tentacula itself.

"Oh." The sound escaped before she could stop it.

The silver veining was obvious now that someone had pointed it out. So were the paired tendrils. It was mildly irritating how quickly the differences became apparent when explained by someone who actually knew what they were looking at.

"I hate that you've just made more sense in thirty seconds than this entire chapter." She tapped the edge of her textbook accusingly.

The way he'd redirected the vine without hesitation, identified it almost immediately, and explained the differences in terms she could actually understand made something click into place.

He had somehow taken information she'd spent twenty minutes staring at and made it stick in significantly less time. That seemed... potentially useful.

Freya briefly glanced at the nearby seedlings pushing through soil, climbing vines wrapping around supports, leaves unfurling into fresh frondescence. A pause followed when Freya returned to the boy and studied him for a moment, a thoughtful look replacing some of her earlier frustration.

"So," she said, resting her chin atop her notes, "hypothetically speaking..."

That tone usually meant she was already considering something.

"If someone happened to be terrible at Herbology revision, and someone else happened to identify plants faster than most, how difficult would it be to convince the second person to help the first one study?"

The corner of her mouth twitched.

"Because if you tell me you've memorized every plant in this greenhouse from seed to germination to full-grown menace, I might decide you're worth borrowing before O.W.L. exams."

Nyle's ears immediately began turning pink as he stared at her, unable to tear his forget-me-not blue gaze away.

The reaction felt disproportionately strong for what had, objectively, been a fairly harmless observation. Yet something about hearing someone acknowledge something he could do well slipped past defenses he'd otherwise kept firmly in place.

"Oh."

Yes. An exceptionally eloquent response.

"Well... not everyone learns particularly well from reading something and immediately being expected to retain it. You might simply be more of an auditory learner. Or someone who benefits from seeing a practical example first."

Much better. More words, less single sounds.

His grip shifted slightly on the tray of seedlings balanced in his arms, fingers tightening fractionally around the edge for something to do with his hands. A familiar urge surfaced immediately: explain why she was overestimating him. Clarify that he wasn't actually that knowledgeable. Point out the dozen mistakes he still made regularly. Draw attention to the fact that he was that Hufflepuff who had nearly destroyed the common room with plants.

The corner of his mouth twitched faintly as he glanced toward the Venomous Tentacula, now occupying itself with wrapping lazily around its support instead of plotting textbook theft.

The strange thing was that the conversation had already done something to the knot of uncertainty that hung over him like a heavy black dog these days. For a few minutes he hadn't been worrying about getting something wrong. He had simply been explaining a plant to someone who wanted to understand it.

Useful.

The feeling was small and fragile, like the first green shoot pushing through soil after a long winter. And, much like those shoots, he immediately felt inclined to protect it ― nurture it.

"I'd be happy to help," he smiled at her, the offer emerging so naturally that he didn't realize until afterward how quickly he'd given it. "Assuming you're asking, that is."

Then, remembering a recent and rather embarrassing incident involving an entire conversation, a music festival, and the discovery that introductions were unsurprisingly useful things to exchange, he straightened slightly and adjusted the tray more securely against his hip. A loose strand of blond hair had escaped his increasingly doomed ponytail sometime during the conversation. He pushed it back absently, only for it to immediately begin falling forward again in open defiance of his efforts.

"I'm Nyle, by the way." He paused and attempted to blow the loose strands of blond hair away from his face. "And a survivor of OWL examinations. I found the anticipatory stress beforehand to be much worse than the exams themselves, for what it's worth."

The fifth year stared at him for a moment, trying very hard not to comment on the combination of pink ears, rebellious hair, and the fact that he'd somehow managed to turn a conversation about a textbook-stealing plant into an educational lecture.

"That sounds much better than 'person who has reread the same page four times and somehow retained less information with each attempt,'" she admitted, huffing out a quiet laugh.

A reluctant smile crept onto her face despite herself.

"Herbology feels like being expected to recognize hundreds of different species based on details so small they may as well be invisible." Her eyes swept across the greenhouse. "Half the time all I see is 'green plant number one' and 'green plant number two.'" She paused. "Which is unfortunate, because I'm fairly certain every plant in here realized years ago that I wasn't born with whatever instinct makes someone a green thumb."

The textbook earned another look, as though it had personally contributed to her frustration.

"I think Defence spoiled me. Most of our lessons involve actually doing something: cast a spell, recognize a threat, outsmart your opponent in a duel, try not to end up unconscious on the floor." She shrugged lightly. "It's all refreshingly clear to me."

Her attention drifted back to the young Tentacula, which had abruptly abandoned its earlier attempts at theft in favour of looking perfectly well-behaved. Freya narrowed her eyes at it.

"See? Now it's pretending to be innocent."

Only then did she turn back toward Nyle, shoving her textbook and notes aside.

"Freya," she offered, finally returning the introduction. "Current victim of O.W.L. examinations. And if you're offering help, I am absolutely asking."

The answer came so quickly that it surprised even her. The corner of her mouth twitched upward.

"So, what magical plants thrive in particularly hyetal climates? Or is that another chapter that's waiting to ambush me later?"

The corner of Nyle's mouth twitched upward as she described the greenhouse as little more than varying categories of green. To be fair, everyone did have their own niche. He was tutoring a different Slytherin in Creatures and her categorizing varied from 'ugly beast number one' to 'thing I won't touch with a 100 meter pole' ― though he was finally starting to understand her definitions to understand what she was referring to so he could course correct.

The reassurance, however, came easily. Far easier than accepting praise ever did, at least.

His gaze drifted toward the young Tentacula just in time to catch Freya narrowing her eyes at it, unsure just who was egging who on at this point.

"You know, you've been staring at that plant like it's challenged you to a duel for the last five minutes."

Carefully shifting the tray of seedlings down on a nearby table, Nyle tucked a loose strand of blond hair back toward the increasingly questionable ponytail and streaked his cheek with a bit of dirt in the process.

"You keep describing Herbology like it's entirely different from Defence Against the Dark Arts, but I'm not sure it is." He pursed his lips, his attention flicked toward the mischievous creeping vines again with a sharp nod of the head. "Every plant has strengths, weaknesses, identifying traits, preferred environments, and varying levels of...what we'll call hostility for the sake of metaphor. You're essentially learning how to recognize potential threats before they decide to bite, poison, strangle, or otherwise inconvenience you."

The sapling chose that moment to curl one tendril innocently around the edge of its pot while another reached out towards her quill once again. Nyle snapped his fingers and pointed at it.

"Exactly."

His expression brightened slightly as she accepted his offer without hesitation, the quiet thrill of being useful sending warm little sparks through his chest. But then his eyes drifted briefly toward the greenhouse ceiling as he considered her next question.

"I... hope this doesn't sound patronizing, but can I ask where you're getting stuck?" His tone remained careful, maybe too much so, and genuinely curious rather than judgmental. "Do you know what qualifies as a hyetal climate already, or is that part of what's making the chapter difficult?"

Because there was a considerable difference between struggling to remember which plants preferred high-rainfall environments and struggling with the terminology itself. The distinction mattered... at least, it did to Nyle. Plants had taught him long ago that treating the symptom was rarely as effective as understanding the root of the problem first.

"Actually, that's not a bad place to start. Rather than memorizing individual species, try thinking about what conditions would force a plant to adapt. If something lives somewhere wet all the time, what problems might it need to solve? Things like rot or fungus or waterlogged roots or limited sunlight beneath dense canopies."

His gaze returned to her, shoulders slouching slightly in apology for rambling. A rambling that wasn't quite finished yet.

"Once you start understanding why a plant developed certain traits, remembering them becomes much easier than trying to memorize lists. At least... that's how my brain does it."

Freya followed his gaze toward the Tentacula and immediately looked back at him with a look that suggested he had just proven her point rather than his.

"It has challenged me, most definitely," she informed him matter-of-factly. "But it seems to not have learned proper duelling etiquette."

Her attention shifted back to Nyle as he continued, and despite herself, she found her expression growing more thoughtful with every comparison he made between Herbology and Defence Against the Dark Arts.

At first she looked skeptical. Then curious. Then mildly annoyed. Because the more he explained it, the more it made sense.

"So you're saying I should stop thinking about them as plants and start thinking about them as threats. Hostile, unpredictable, occasionally poisonous threats." A beat following as her eyes swept across the greenhouse once again. "That actually sounds much more familiar."

The admission came reluctantly.

Painfully reluctantly.

Yet she couldn't deny the logic of it. Every plant had identifying features. Strengths. Weaknesses. Behaviours. Habitats. It wasn't so different from learning how to recognize magical creatures or dark beings before they became dangerous.

"Oh, that's irritating," Freya pointed accusingly at him, eyeing the plant as it reached out toward her again. "You've gone and made Herbology sensible."

When Nyle asked where she was getting stuck, however, she stared at him for a moment as though the answer should have been obvious.

"All of it?" A laugh escaped her as she shuddered slightly. "No, that's not entirely fair. I know what hyetal means. High rainfall. Wet environments. Lots of moisture. It's everything that comes after that where things start blurring together. The terminology isn't usually the problem. It's remembering why one plant develops certain traits while another develops completely different ones. And the leaves all start looking ubiquitously similar after a while."

As he elaborated, Freya found herself processing the information far more than she had with the textbook. Most revision guides seemed determined to present Herbology as an endless collection of facts to be memorized. Nyle, meanwhile, was treating it more like a chain of cause and effect.

"I don't think my textbook has ever once asked me why a plant developed a trait," she admitted. "It mostly just informs me that it did and then expects me to remember it forever."

Freya's playful accusation drew an immediate flush into Nyle's ears.

"I—I wouldn't go that far," he murmured, one hand tucking another loose strand of blond hair back into the increasingly unsuccessful ponytail attempting to contain it. It escaped again almost immediately. He really would be better off just redoing it at this point.

His gaze drifted back toward the Tentacula, watching one of its tendrils curl lazily through the air.

"I just..." He hesitated, searching for words that felt less presumptuous. "I don't think everyone has to ― should? ― approach a subject from the same direction." His shoulders lifted in a small shrug. "You've spent years learning how to read situations in Defence. To notice patterns. To forage for information before acting. To notice the little details that tell you whether something is dangerous, frightened, bluffing, or about to lunge. Why it behaves the way it does and what its weaknesses might be... plants leave little clues too. Different ones, certainly, but clues all the same. It seemed a shame not to borrow instincts you already trust instead of trying to grow entirely new ones."

A faint smile tugged at one corner of his mouth. Watching understanding settle across her expression proved strangely rewarding. It was there in the way her skepticism had gradually yielded to curiosity, then reluctant acceptance, until she was looking at the greenhouse as though it had quietly become a puzzle worth solving rather than a punishment to endure. Nyle found himself hoping — perhaps a little selfishly — that the shift would last. That the determination which made her so formidable in Defence might simply need a different direction to flourish here as well.

"Sometimes... most of the time... I think changing the question is easier than changing yourself."

His ears warmed yet another shade as she answered so readily, and honestly, bringing his color dangerously close to a ripe peace once again. An apology never quite made it to his lips, though it lingered there all the same. He had worried he'd started several steps too far back, insulting her intelligence in the process, when in reality she'd simply been approaching the problem from an entirely different direction and already had the foundations established.

"So... if you already know what a hyetal climate is..." he began thoughtfully, "what do you suppose a plant, or anything living for that matter, would actually like about living somewhere with that much rainfall? Or ... what difficulties might all that water create for instead?"

He smiled almost apologetically then, hand reaching up and ruffling the hair on the back of his head ― which sufficiently rendered his updo an up-don't, the tie hanging by the grace of a lock of hair.

"I know I'm answering your question with more questions..." he apologized, his ears pinkened faintly once again ― if they had ever dulled to begin with, "Which probably feels both counterintuitive and mildly maddening. My uncle does the same thing. I used to think he was avoiding giving me the answer... but I eventually realized he was trying to help me find one I could trust on my own."
