Why J.K.Rowling shouldn't write another sequel

Magnus Linklater, for The Times, has written a piece focusing on why authors, such as J.K.Rowling, have to say goodbye to their characters and resist the urge to appease fans by writing further novels about them.

Quote:

There is nothing to match the tyranny of a long-running hero — except perhaps for the tyranny of the insatiable reader. There comes a time when, like the guests who have overstayed their welcome, principal characters have to be asked to leave.
Quote:

Such is the popular appetite for fictional heroes that they can acquire a longevity and an instinct for survival that often takes their author by surprise. The reality they convey may be stronger, and certainly more attractive, than the monochrome version which, for many readers, passes for ordinary life.
Quote:

So when, eventually, [...] Harry Potter confronts his final fate, we should not be surprised if there is widespread mourning across the land, and a clamour for him to return. Enormous pressure will be put on the author for just one more sequel, for the mystery of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft. She must resist it. A character who returns is never quite the same as the one who left. A clean break is better for all concerned.

As much as I hate to admit it, this is probably true!

I agree with you, tate.

Padie 03-21-2007 04:29 PM

Well, in a way it IS true. However, I think that it wouldn't be too harmful for anyone if there was just one more book even it it wasn't directly connected to Harry. I mean, I believe that all the HP fans would be completely joyful with a book about the Marauders per example, eh? ^^

Rockywizardia 03-21-2007 04:31 PM

yeah, I gotta admit it's true as well. Still...though. :bye:

BrightestWitch 03-21-2007 04:32 PM

It's true. I love HP, but I'm glad that our journey is coming to an end. The books have been a good escape from reality, but as much as I love them I'm glad she is stopping at seven. =D

Ghidighici 03-21-2007 04:37 PM

Well, this is all very true, but in some cases (such as HP) it is quite sad to say goodbye to your favourite heroes, knowing there will be nothing written about them again. And I mean that nothing will be written again by their original author.

hermione1994 03-21-2007 04:38 PM

I suppose its true:(

ginny_first_year_pureblood 03-21-2007 04:40 PM

yeah, i can see where you found truth in that, its a sad truth though, for years we've anxiously waited for these books to come out and now, after july 21st, our harry potter waiting will be done and over. and there will no long be anything to look forward too. :(

Grovie14 03-21-2007 04:48 PM

It's so true... *sniff sniff*

argentinaz_angel 03-21-2007 04:55 PM

I know, I already accepted this and I know it as true!

Mrs Felton 03-21-2007 04:57 PM

I have to agree with this..

BrigetteAlisia 03-21-2007 05:06 PM

I agree...JK should just end the story because if she doesn't then people will just keep asking and asking for more...

:bubbly: Yes, here's to killing off Snape ... :run: *is mauled by the fangirls*

:swfight: Bring it!!!!!!!!!!!111111

I think that's dumb, it's really a readers choice to make, I mean look at fan fiction? I personally want to read the last book before I decide if Jo actually wrote a good ending ... or if I think it merits a sequel. In the end it's the author's choice wether they WRITE one but it's ours wether we WANT one.

And I've always said, fine put Harry away, but what about Harry's kids? What about Hogwarts? Those places will still be there ... what about Neverland? *cries*

EDIT: :sheep:

Hermy99 03-21-2007 05:59 PM

I agree with it though I am a little disappointed.

padfoot_88 03-21-2007 06:02 PM

She said she was only going to write 7, so I think she should stop at the 7. She's written it now, and it's in publication. She's happy with it, and has said she won't write anymore, which is a merit to her by not giving in to public demand or herself. She's sticking to her word, which is excellent! Sure, we may not all like that, but we have to give her credit. She's given us 6, almost 7 brilliantly amazing books, so we should be grateful for what we have and not greedy for what we can't have.

Golden Monkey 03-21-2007 06:03 PM

I completely agree with it, it'll be sad when it happens, but it's for the best.

I competley argree with HermionePotter89. I think the series has to come to an end about HP but it would be lovley to have a few books in connections like Marauders or maybe Hogwarts a History for charity or something

OtterySt.Catchpole 03-21-2007 06:07 PM

Ottery doesn't care about opinions ... just Shan writing him an E-mail about the boy!

:sheep: :glomp: Just because it's the popular opinion doesn't make it write.

Weasley is my King 03-21-2007 06:56 PM

Yes, it's quite true... But Harry Potter will live on forever, no matter what happens in this final book. I think everyone on this site will agree.

Sarah Granger-Snape 03-21-2007 07:09 PM

I still wish there were more than seven books :(

Taytertots101 03-21-2007 07:10 PM

...........well i guess that is true.............
