Video: Jamie Campbell Bower talks Grindelwald & Dumbledore in Deathly Hallows

Actor Jamie Campbell Bower attended the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party back in July, and was interviewed about his future projects, including Deathly Hallows and New Moon.

Jamie noted specifically that although Dumbledore had been outed as gay by J.K. Rowling two years ago, there will be no reference of the late headmaster's feelings for his character, Grindelwald, in the films. He said that there may be subtext, but it is not implicit in the actual movies. The video can be watched below.

Since I'm still reluctant to admitting the whole gay thing for more than an advertising stunt, I'm more than happy that there's no clear mention of something that wasn't clearly mentioned in the book.

First to reply, yay!!

That I'll never buy. She was put in a position where she was asked if Dumbledore loved someone, and what else could she have said? I really really doubt it was a spur-of-the-moment revelation to her, and that she did it just to promote, what, the Harry Potter series? If there's one franchise that doesn't need extra promotion or publicity, it's Harry Potter.

Also, she admitted Dumbledore being gay as a random throwaway comment on her documentary two years ago, too (when the interviewer asked about Charlie Weasley being gay, and she just sort of shrugged and said no, Dumbledore was). It wasn't a big deal to her, and that segment was shot before the reading she did two years ago. I think fans just want to think she wants to bring about a huge, shocking wow factor to the series, but really? I definitely don't think so.

Agreed! 100% But I do admit that I thought it was a hoax at first, but then I saw that documentary that you're talking about and I was like "Okay... yeah, that makes sense." Plus- what does it REALLY matter. I don't think his sexual orientation changes the plot at all. But that may just be me.

ANYWAYS- I thought it was a charming interview with Jamie and I'm super SUPER excited to see him in DH! =DD

PadfootAndTheWolf 10-18-2009 12:26 AM

Good interview! :D

ladycplum 10-18-2009 12:46 AM

I'm still not believing that DD is gay. Having feelings for one person of the same sex does not make you gay. Yes I'm reading too much into it, but she never gave any more evidence that he had any other relationships with men after having feelings for Grindlewald. If she'd say something to that affect, then yes, I'd have no problems with saying DD is gay. Until then, he's not. Just flexible, life every other human being.

Oh and Jamie, WILL YOU BRUSH YOUR HAIR PLEASE????? :xd:

Anum 10-18-2009 12:47 AM

cool. don't really know what to think of the "extra stuff"...
BTW< his sunglasses are soo unusual..they're like Harry's glasses, except in sunglasses form!! wow

Patronus Charm 10-18-2009 12:55 AM

he is so feminine looking...not that there is anything wrong with that....he simply has a lovely face...

RedheadQueen 10-18-2009 02:08 AM

OK, so he sounds much more normal and sane in the interview than some of the pictures I have seen of him! I like him, and he interviews well!! Can't wait for DH!!

** And for the whole dumbledore thing, I say I agree that it is something Jo had in her head, but even she said that she didn't think it affected the plotline and that is why it isn't in the book. It doesn't matter, he is the "Greatest Sorcerer of ALL Time!" LOL SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!

emily2013 10-18-2009 02:18 AM

I just don't know what to think about him. I guess i'll make an opinion sometime.

I totally agree with you. If Dumbledore was a gay just because he did not love anyone, so what about the others: McGonagal, Charlie, Slughorn...?
I think he was single because he spent all of his time to find a way to destroy evil and expiated his sin in the past.

princess of*hp* 10-18-2009 03:36 AM

Great chat. I find him oddly smexeh. :P
I love his shades: they're like a cross between John Lennon and Harry Potter!

Harry Lennon; John Potter; Lenpot!

jessica k malfoy 10-18-2009 04:10 AM

the sunglasses and the gum chewing are making me laugh!

JTuck 10-18-2009 04:54 AM

Good interview! I really enjoyed it.

MoviegoerKinz 10-18-2009 07:04 AM

He's so cute!

Moon Eyes 10-18-2009 08:52 AM

Firstly, about Dumbledore. I think it's good they didn't put it in the movie. I wouldn't care if they did, though. It'd just be extra stuff, that could turn away new fans and younger audiences, plus it wasn't ever mentioned, so.... But I never thought it was publicity, though it did gain attention (my friend, who barely likes HP, and hates reading with a passion, knew about Dumbledore, before my other friend who actually reads).

I dunno what to make of him, but I can't wait to see him in New Moon and Deathly Hallows. He's so cute!!! <3 And I want to steal his glasses! :p

nice interview

iwantorlando05 10-18-2009 01:37 PM

IT's not mentioned in the books either. At least not clearly. If you read between the lines then you will notice it though. But I love that Dumbledore is Gay. It makes so much sense and just makes his character even more awesome!

I'm still annoyed by Campbell-Bower though. I just don't like him.

Harry Potter didn't win ANYTHING at the Scream Awards. I guess the fans don't care anymore.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion...but I loved the last two films. I saw them both multiple times and I thought they were very faithful to the books. When books are that complex, you can expect the films to be mirror-images of them. Plus where's the excitement when you know exactly what to expect. So I loved them. Can't wait for Deathly Hallows and I have a feeling HBP will be nominated for a Special F/X Oscar!! :D
