| | | Top British illustrator criticises Potter books
Chris Riddle, a top British illustrator, has criticised the Harry Potter books for not having illustrations in them (although the US editions have chapter art, the UK versions do not). Quote:
"Illustrations play an important role in children's literature," said Riddle.
“Children respond to pictures from the year dot. It is a shame they are disappearing from fiction – I find it amazing that Harry Potter isn’t illustrated."
Personally, I like them without illustrations, as it leaves you to use your own imagination. |

Ah, well HP isn't only for children, it's pretty much for all ages. Plus, kids nowadays find books just as appealing as pictures... Well, not all of them.
Either way, I think the books are better without images as you have to think about each person and imagine them, instead of being told someone looks like that.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Skylar Fay Sixth Year | No illistrations are much better. There's a lot in those books to capture in pictures, and it would be a difficult task to try. You idea of what's happening would completly dissappear.
And it's not just children who read the books either. |

Well, like some of the others said, Harry Potter is no longer seen as a children's book. In fact, as they get darker and darker, it has become much more of an adult series.
But beyond that...I think that books without pictures, even ones for children, are good because it shows them that you don't need pictures to make the books interesting. It shows them that they should rely on the story itself rather than the pretty picture. Take some of the pictures out of some children's books, and you don't get anything that great. (NOt all, but some) So, the fact that HP doesn't have pictures here and there in the books shouldn't take away from it. Plus, I think the pictures at the beginning of the chapters are great and just enough!

Well, if you think about it, HP books arent really children's books anymore... they are too dark for a kid.

Books without illustrations are still very interesting because they let the readers use their imaginations to make a the story come to life. And I agree that HP books are not for kids anymore.

I like illustrations so I completely agree. They have TWO versions of the books for crying out loud. They should fully illustrate the children's edition and then others who don't want that can buy the adult edition. It doesn't make sense that they do not. The only difference between the adult and the children's is the cover art. Big deal.

| Illustrations are nice. I mean, they are fine. In the UK versions, I like them a lot, 'coz it gives us an idea as to what to expect in the chapter. But I like it without them as well. We have a fun time imagining whats going on! Im neutral. |

Hmmm well, I think the books are fine without them... but I really do like the illustrations at the beggining of each chapter in the America edition. They really get your mind clicking, and at the end of the chapter, if you look back at the picture, it makes so much more sense and it's just really nice to see another interpretation of it.
It's not a massive illustration, but that small little picture is really nice in my opinion, without over doing it.

Hmm interesting. I don't know if I'd want illustrations in HP.. I just wanna know what happens next, no time to look at illustrations! LOL. But I do remember when I was younger, the illustrations kept me reading.. like if I didn't find a book all that interesting, I'd still keep reading it to get to the next picture etc.
A whole bunch of people here seem to think that it limits your imagination if there are illustrations in a book, but I think that a picture serves as a starting point, which you then build upon using your imagination. An image is there to complement the text, not to force you to think a certain way.
I do think it's a shame that illustration is seen as something that is predominantly for children. HP fans of all people should know that adults can like/enjoy/appreciate something that was originally intended for children

I wholeheartedly agree. Quote:

Not really. It's more "young adult" than adult. Trust me on this
What it seems this guy is missing on, is that 10 year olds are still "kids" and therefore read "children's books" when books aimed at 9 year olds start taking pictures out. Look at The Babysitter's Club books. The only illustration that I remember was seeing "Chapter _" in blocks, and I read those when I was 9, when I was 11 I dove into the Adult level books. Why? Because of people like him insisting that books 'have to have illustrations'. Shouldn't the sales say that illustrations really aren't needed for children to want to read?

Hmmph! Illustrations are for younger kids! I don't care if they have illustrations or not, they're better without them.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Charlotte (Charlie) Elizabeth Jamison | Going Broadway <3 Picture books are for children. If you add images to Harry Potter you are saying "this is strictly a little kid's book" this way, there is imagination (which is also decreasing in kids) and the book seems 'appropriate' for more ages, which it should be, because the book is.
PS. I like that his name is Riddle...

I think the books are fine without them, but I really do like the illustrations at the beggining of each chapter in the American edition. It's just really nice that after you've read the chapter and look back at the illustration you know what it is about. Also, the illustrations give you a better picture of the scene that it's about.
