Post Tom Felton talks Draco's loyalties in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II

In a new interview, actor Tom Felton revealed a tough decision Draco Malfoy had to make in terms of choosing where his loyalties laid in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, his reaction to having seen some sequences already in the final installment, and the fact that he will be moving out to Los Angeles for work-related reasons later this year.

Quote:
So you're moving to L.A.?
Felton:
Yeah, me, my girlfriend and my dog. I just need to sort out everything with my dog. If she can come, then we're all good.

This is the final one — the final impression of Draco Malfoy. In your mind, what's going to be his defining moment in "Part 2"?
Felton:
Well, he seems so conflicted and he doesn't know what to do. When it comes to the final battle, he's still a bit confused about which way he should go. It's only in the last stages of the battle that he's really called upon from the dark side when he's standing on the good side, and we see a tough moment for him when he doesn't know where his loyalties lie.

That's definitely going to be the defining moment for Draco. Hopefully, I nailed it. It's nice when I get sprung upon by the mega "Harry Potter" fans and they say, "We understand Draco's pain." It's like, "Thank you! That's a compliment! That's a sign I must have done good."

I know you haven't seen the full thing, but they've been screening it for audiences and the producers told us it's brought people to tears.
Felton:
I spoke to [producer] David [Heyman] the other day, and he said it got the highest rating of feedback of any "Potter" ever. It kind of goes without saying that it's one of the most highly anticipated films of, well, a really long time. Everyone making it knows that it. It's going to be exciting. I'm endlessly excited.

Have you seen bits and pieces?
Felton:
I saw bits and pieces when I did the ADR voice-looping. It looked amazing. I was forgetting to do my lines because I was just watching it going, "Wow, this is incredible!" And that was only half-finished with the special effects.

Do you see any of the flash-forward epilogue?
Felton:
I didn't! That was one of the sections they were most uncertain about and which route they were going. They were talking about it being too long or not long enough. I'm not entirely sure what it's going to be. I will say we filmed it, but how it's there in the final cut, I don't know.
Tom also mentioned that due to time constraints, alterations had to be made to the finale.

Quote:
"Different endings is definitely an exaggeration," he explained. "One of the beauties we had is that we stuck originally to the book and filmed everything. Now, of course, we can't have a four hour film. Obviously, the director is going to have to pick and choose. Even I'm excited to see exactly what happens, because I haven't seen the final cut."

"There will definitely be alterations," said Felton. "Not necessarily alternate endings. I'm sorry to inform you that Draco doesn't win in the end and overpower Harry and get the girl! It just doesn't happen for him, I'm afraid."

I think Sirius's advice to Harry about how the world isn't split up into good people and Death Eaters applies a lot to Draco. Draco is very similar to Snape in that both characters had an unhealthy fascination with the Dark Arts, and both realized they got in too deep when they saw the true horrors of being on Voldemort's side. Draco is a product of his upbringing - a father who was rich, spoiled, and wanted power at any cost, and a mother who is snotty and pampered. Dumbledore saw the good in Draco on the tower, and realized he is not a killer and only doing it out of fear. Like someone else said, Draco also was reluctant to identify the trio, because he knew that would mean death for them. But he also wanted his family to be powerful again, so he considered turning Harry over to Voldemort for praise, and also for his own safety because the war would stop.

So long story short, I think he has both good and bad qualities (mostly bad) and has shown both cowardice and bravery, which has made him an interesting character. Like how I feel about Snape, I think Draco is actually more interesting than Harry (who is always good) and Voldemort (who is always bad).

I think I may cry a wee bit...Or you know, a lot...

I also plan on seeing it multiple times. Like, a ludicrous amount.
