The Bling Ring: Sofia Coppola / USA / 2013 / 90 mins

Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Claire Julien, Katie Chang, Leslie Mann

A shocking and funny look at how far celebrity worship can go.

Sofia Coppola’s latest is based on an incredible true story. A group of L.A. high school friends track the activities of celebrities online so that they can rob their homes. Motivated less by greed than by a fascination with status brands and famous people, the gang target Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Rachel Bilson, Lindsay Lohan and others, bragging of their intimacy with their victims. A biting, stylish take on celebrity culture. All screenings of The Bling Ring will have audio description, via infra-red headsets, for those who are sight-impaired.

The Sea: Stephen Brown / Ireland, UK / 2013 / 87 mins

Ciarán Hinds, Charlotte Rampling, Natascha McElhone, Rufus Sewell, Bonnie Wright, Sinéad Cusack

A journey back in time to a summer of turbulent emotions.

A middle-aged art historian returns to the Irish seaside village where, as a boy, he and his family spent their holidays. His visit triggers a series of memories, some romantic, some disturbing, of a summer that saw the awakening of sexuality and an unexpected tragedy. John Banville adapted his Man Booker Prize-winning novel to provide the script for this haunting and superlatively acted film.
