Steven Spielberg reveals his involvement in early Harry Potter films production The news that renowned director Steven Spielberg was originally considered to direct the first Harry Potter films was of no surprise, but the depth to which he went in the early days of production, including working on the script with Steven Kloves, was revealed recently during an interview with BBC Breakfast. Spielberg admitted that he spent nearly half a year working on the first Harry Potter film, Sorcerer's Stone, but opted out in the midst of early production of the series - one of which he wanted to make an animated version. More on that from the director can be read here. "I was offered Harry Potter. I developed it for about five or six months with [Potter screenwriter] Steve Kloves, and then I dropped out." |
wow that's crazy, what a crazy guy. Imagine having that opportunity and not going for it. Just...crazy. |
I'm kinda glad he didn't, I loooove how they turned out, so yeah. :3 |
i'm happy how the films are so i'm happy he dropped it |
biggest mistake of his lyf! |
Imagine if the films had been animations ... No Alan Rickman swag! (maybe the voice though) |
Whaaa?? It's unbelievable that he actually helped wrote the script. It turned out quite good, though. I really can't imagine if Harry Potter turned out to be animated. |
No way! Wow, I didn't expect that. No wonder the first film was so amazing! But you dropped it??????????????????????????????? |
I'm so glad they did a live version as opposed to animated. I love Spielberg, but I actually don't think he would have been right for Harry Potter, I'm glad he made the decision to opt out. |
agree with all of you....it's funny that he says that now...after all this time...does he want credit? |
Can't believe he didn't go for it, mind you, it is still a great film! I do, howver, think that it's good that he directs things that 'feel right' because I reckon you can get the best results if you are passionate about the story line, not saying that he wasn't |
I believe Spielberg doesn't need Potter credit to be one of the greats in cinema. I've heard a few years ago that he was somehow linked to the 1st film, which for me is one of the best. Maybe he didn't said anything before because the movies were still being made... Actually I believe he made the best option and I'm happy that he dropped it. Animated version wouldn't work well on HP (imo). And we wouldn't have Alan Rickman as Snape :snape2: |
Wait.... he wanted to make one of them an animated movie? :faint: Suuuuper glad that never happened. |
I remember he wanted to do an animated version, because he said something like, 'if i'm gonna do it i wanna do something different, because Harry Potter is already big and will be a success with any director'. So it wasn't a real challenge for him. And it was when he did 'the polar express', so i guess he was into that kind of animation... and now 'tin tin', wow steven, you are really creative. |
I'm glad he didn't do it, to be honest. |
I thought he dropped out because they weren't gonna cast haley joel osment in it. |
Harry Potter animated? It wouldn't be the same. |
I'm glad that the HP movies didn't end up being animated. That would have been terrible. However, I'm sure the early films benefited from Spielberg's input because he is a talented director. It's also pleasant that he only works on things that touch him, as he has the ability to do since he is renowned. |
He would have been great for Goblet of fire and onwards. At least, much, much better than the ones who did the job. |
I knew it!!!I knew there was something different about those films!!! |
I couldn't imagine being offered something like that and actually working on it for some time and then dropping it. Harry Potter has affected the lives of so many people and went on for such a long time. That is something that millions of us would have killed for and he just drops it. Oh well everything happens for a reason and the films did just fine without him! |
