Researchers find Harry Potter is addictive

A study recently submitted to the Journal of General Psychology determined that Harry Potter can be addictive, with fans of the series experiencing "withdrawal" after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

After studying 4,000 Potter fans online, researchers found signs of addiction in 10 percent of the group, using a scale established for smoking in which they replaced cigarettes with Deathly Hallows. Participants considered "addicts" were those who:
Quote:

… described spending more than four hours a day on Potter-related activities, experiencing interference with appetite and sleep patterns, engaging in less physical activity, having a lower sense of well-being and being more irritable after completing the series.
According to the study's lead researcher, Dr. Jeffrey Rudski, a psychology professor at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania:
Quote:

An addiction is an addiction is an addiction. An addiction to a drug is no different than an addiction to Harry Potter or the Internet or pornography. Although it's not always a bad thing. There's a community that you get with Harry Potter that you don't get with heroin.
The study did find, however, that fans who used a creative outlet for their addiction – like fanfic writers and graphic designers – were the least likely to go through withdrawal symptoms that caused disruption in their day-to-day lives.

You can read more about the study here.

cake.ninjak 02-23-2008 02:25 AM

dude. it's so true.

ONLY 10%? They OBVIOUSLY did not interview people on this website.

edit: first to post! :woot:

pgspickles 02-23-2008 02:32 AM

I totally agree with Yellow. I would be in that 10 % *counts how many hours she spends on here a week* I have withdrawal symptoms from this website while I'm away. It's odd but awesome!!

argentinaz_angel 02-23-2008 02:34 AM

Omg, I find that surprisingly unbelivable xD But I can agree, when DH came out i didnt sleep and only snacked on toast since i refused to drop the book!

Azalii 02-23-2008 02:35 AM

~Abby~

squidnie 02-23-2008 03:19 AM

I truly am a addict, how very sad...But at least Im not alone! lol. thats kinda awesome, how they did that. and i agree with jikweasel90 lol.

Anna Banana 02-23-2008 03:40 AM

I am SOOO laughing, because I am SO addicted to Harry Potter.

And yes, I am experiencing Potter withdrawal! LOL

*is proud of it all, too* hahha

Keysquah 02-23-2008 04:15 AM

Hahahaha! This is soooooo funny!!!!
Im sooooo in that 10%!!!!
Im usually always reading Harry Potter! I just read the books over and over (I promise, for me, it doesnt get old!) but I havent really had time so Ive been having withdrawl! lol
But dont worry! I have a normal life! I just like to read about Harry before I sleep! lol

(Wow! I sound like a complete freak-nerd-obsessed-ick!)

purebloodprincess87 02-23-2008 04:40 AM

half_blood_prince 02-23-2008 05:19 AM

wow thats interesting

Krissy Moon 02-23-2008 05:32 AM

Well, duh. Today I got in an argument with my fiance on something Harry Potter related...that just isn't normal.

Ginevra 02-23-2008 05:34 AM

I found that quite interesting. I am slightly addicted to HP. Hey slightly addictive is well, still addictive

Double_Trouble 02-23-2008 05:51 AM

I'm definately addicted and probably suffering withdrawls.. Yeah.

DalekDeatheater 02-23-2008 05:53 AM

Well DUH! I guess they didn't mess with interviewing us!

Little Trooper 02-23-2008 07:01 AM

Thats odd but cool. I am so one of those people that are addictied. I also got in a fight with my husband today actuall about Harry Potter. But not haveing many withdrawls now that i'm writing FF's.

SilverTiger 02-23-2008 07:27 AM

I have fights with my mom about how much time I'm on the internet. And most of that is on here, or HP-related sites. Does that make me addicted? :P

Although, I have to say I think Buffy infiltrated my life first. But isn't it also said that addicts can often transfer their addictions to other things?

Obi-Wan K'Lari 02-23-2008 08:13 AM

 Okay....smoking? That's messed.

DeathEater24601 02-23-2008 08:34 AM

:rotfl: I saw the title of this article and thought to myself, 'Addictive? No, really? I never noticed!' :xd: Of course Harry Potter is addictive. I spend at least four hours a day on SS...and often much more.

Captain Jack Sparrow 02-23-2008 09:02 AM

Oh man! whyu didnt they do thid site :X ! im sure id be one ;p!

That comes hand-in-hand with running a fansite

Quote:

There's a community that you get with Harry Potter that you don't get with heroin.
Why do I feel like the junkies of the world will object to that?

Eerised 02-23-2008 09:34 AM

Sooo..... yeah.

I was totally reading this out loud to my flatmates and then... I got to that part where they say, "fans experiencing withdrawl after the release of..." and had to stop because...

I totally had withdrawl.

I was so utterly and completely depressed and went on a fanfiction binge. And then... promised not to read the books for at least two years because I just can't take that kind of mental and emotional stress.

So... Harry Potter should come with a warning lable apparently.

Quote:

The study did find, however, that fans who used a creative outlet for their addiction – like fanfic writers and graphic designers – were the least likely to go through withdrawal symptoms that caused disruption in their day-to-day lives.
And you know... I totally am a fanfic writer and I still had withdrawl like woah. This entire thing is me. Oh, my god. I need help. And yeah... wow.

Quote:

described spending more than four hours a day on Potter-related activities, experiencing interference with appetite and sleep patterns, engaging in less physical activity, having a lower sense of well-being and being more irritable after completing the series.
So Harry Potter is the reason I never sleep! Huh!

Dear god. I need like... HPAnonymous or something. I woud totally do terribly in a group like that.

RemusBlack 02-23-2008 09:55 AM

10%? How many people did they interview?! More like 60% +! xD

McSainty 02-23-2008 10:36 AM

Mawhahahahahah !! I'm so addicted to the Potter !!!!!!

Maxilocks 02-23-2008 10:39 AM

What? - blink -

Yes, I'm addicted. To HP and to SS, both. But I write Fan Fic, and I make graphics, so yes. Lots of creative outlets, you know. ^_^

Padie 02-23-2008 10:54 AM

Geee! Took them a big while to find that out didn't it? *pokes them* And only 10%? HA! As someone said before, they obviously didn't interview anyone from SS XD

Eclipsed 02-23-2008 11:20 AM

That is a little...shocking.
XDD

Blackened 02-23-2008 12:05 PM

HP is probably one of the most addictive things I've ever experienced, so yes, I concur. 10% is a rather small percentage, though. :erm:

Harmonizer 02-23-2008 12:10 PM

ROFL.

Yeah right. We don't need researchers to prove THAT. :P

Lionella 02-23-2008 12:48 PM

Hmm, I think I' not addicted to Harry Potter, more obsessed! XD

Dawlish 02-23-2008 12:58 PM

Harry Potter is pretty addictive i guess. But then so is everything! I mean think of all the people that spend ho9urs infront of the TV because they're addicted to it!

HOPEendures 02-23-2008 01:35 PM

Yeah I'm addicted to Harry Potter id they have a problem with it tough cookies. I'm also addicted to this website. Being away from it for more than a day is like tourture for me. i need to post at least five things a day.

As for that ten percent thing its so small they need to come here in watch that number shoot through the roof.

Prongs999 02-23-2008 02:14 PM

10%!!!!!??????!!!!!!! You've got to be kidding me! SS is full of addicts!

hpluvr037 02-23-2008 02:14 PM

Well, I myself am an addict, so I hope it's not a bad thing! Well, even if it is, I'm not going to stop coming on SS. That would be worse.

cgold 02-23-2008 02:45 PM

Definitely addictive. I'm sad it's over. :( Only sub-standard movies left and even those will soon be over and we'll be left with nothing.

dancerbookl 02-23-2008 03:35 PM

ONly 10%??? They obsoucly don't know what they are talking about. This is like having to live without any sugar for weeks at a time!

bonnelass830 02-23-2008 03:47 PM

Haha! They must have surveyed only casual fans! And that's so funny that fanfic writers and graphic designers experienced less withdrawal...I'm a graphic designer and I was depressed after DH LOL

Research is not infallible! ;)

Sneakeh Cat 02-23-2008 03:51 PM

OMG...That's totally true!

jesusfr33ke2010 02-23-2008 03:53 PM

so true

but only 10%??

LoonyLoopyLuna 02-23-2008 04:15 PM

I do love my father sometimes. It it true though, I would never be playing guitar OR taking Latin if it wasn't for HP. Btw, if anyone wants to see him present his findings, come to Terminus! He also is working on getting his paper published (I go to read it...it's awesome!).

Mrs Felton 02-23-2008 04:41 PM

That's really interesting, but everyone on this site already knew that!!

ngtybtnice 02-23-2008 05:14 PM

Ain't it the truth? <laugh>

When my husband read that article he said it made him think of me.

Guess I am addicted... and proud of it!

Ginny GL 02-23-2008 06:24 PM

I think that's a bit exaggerated, but I certainly have a hard time leaving the books, or fanfic or such.

Pottermaniac 02-23-2008 06:26 PM

Ugh, my mother describes me as addicted. I like to say I'm slightly obsessed. And I think it's more of an obsession with this site, rather than an obsession with the Harry Potter novels themselves. I've read better books (:gasp:). I'm not in withdrawal because the series ended. Probably because I still have SnitchSeeker to come to.

An addiction is something that can totally ruin your lifestyle and your health. And I like to put my life first, and seperate real life and SnitchSeeker completely. Only one of my friends, and my parents know I'm a SnitchSeeker minion. I wish I hadn't told my parents, they think I'm a retard or something. Bleh.

And I think they should've also polled Harry Potter fans who were not on internet communities, because surely, they would be slightly less obsessed than we all are, and we'd get a better impression of how many people are in fact addicted.

Though I sometimes can't fall asleep at night, and soon realise that it's because I'm thinking of something having to do with SnitchSeeker. Every time! I would be on SS much more often were it not for my luferly parents too. :poke:s 'em.

Colley 02-23-2008 06:52 PM

huh.
I dont display any of those addiction signs... maybe it is because of my fanfics.
We always joked that we were addicted and now it's true! :lmao:

Cosmic 02-23-2008 07:21 PM

And there suprised?
Haha

best deatheater 02-23-2008 07:40 PM

they had to use research to find that out??

Captain Jack Sparrow 02-23-2008 07:56 PM

Well, im definately one :) !

Hufflepuffyness 02-23-2008 08:40 PM

They are pretty much explaining me

Beth2310 02-23-2008 08:44 PM

they should have known that a long time ago it took them this long just to say yes Harry Potter is addicting duh!

Mrs_Molly_Weasley 02-23-2008 10:43 PM

Really? We didnt all know that we were addicted when we first read it said Molly in a sarcastic voice

ravenclawrox*_* 02-23-2008 11:24 PM

OK...I like Harry Potter, but I don't think I'm that 10%, because I'm not totally addicted...but I am sad after DH.

Night_Owl 02-24-2008 12:10 AM

soooooooooo true. first time read one i was hooked.

SweetCatastrophe 02-24-2008 01:10 AM

Well, thanks, researchers, for telling us what we already know!

X-Girl 02-24-2008 01:12 AM

They researched it? O_o

How...extreme. X]

I guess it's always great to have researched proof? XD

Hermionespell 02-24-2008 01:40 AM

I have no doubt in my mind that I am addicted to Harry Potter.

Lissy Longbottom 02-24-2008 03:27 AM

Ummm...I don't know if I took it that far

phoenixx 02-24-2008 03:29 AM

We have to admite that harry potter is actually quite addictive.
LOl I know for sure the im one of the 10%.
Harry Potter rocks my socks!

Hermione rocks! 02-24-2008 05:30 AM

*Shrieks* Where can I find placebos to try to cure this addiction?! *Sobs, as they've become addicted and ruined the long life ahead of them*

Ginpotter 02-24-2008 07:09 AM

This is true..But I think this addiction will decrease after all the movies display in theatres. The mania will end or will not be like when there were books and movies still going on.

Becky 02-24-2008 09:52 AM

i am totally addicted, i had this party on the day that DH came out,and instead of partying, i sat there and read DH, by the time i had finished, the party was over :( - but i was happy cause i had read DH, and no-one was allowed to touch my book *clings to book and snarls evilly at anyone who trys to take it*

I don't understand the separation between 'real life' and the internet. The internet is something you use in your life. I don't see the distinction, personally.

SS has, in so many ways, enriched my life; be it through friends, experiences...whatever. Same as HP. Culture is a part of our lives, not separate. At the end of the day, it helped get me into University, led to some amazing journalistic experiences and has helped me meet so many fantastic people. All of which, is intrinsically linked with my life. Therefore I don't see it as an addiction, as such, because that word has negative connotations.

But maybe that's just me

h/g ship lover 02-24-2008 02:23 PM

That wasn't really surprising...

EmmaRules 02-24-2008 03:36 PM

OK. My friends have been saying I'm addicted/obssesed with Harry Potter for years! It shouldn't have taken researchers this long to figure it out!

rellybelly 02-24-2008 04:49 PM

That was really obvious. Look at me, I have a humungus test tomorrow and i'm on ss!

They should definitley visit ss. If they're looking for 'addictive' they'll find it right here. There ar plenty of addicted HP fans on this site. And no way am I saying it's a bad thing!!!!

Go Harry Potter addicters!!

xtonksx 02-24-2008 06:08 PM

I think I already knew this...

 they obviously did not look at some of the members on SS.
but wow. only 10%?

CaityCrucio 02-24-2008 06:29 PM

Yeah i think according to that information that im officially addicted lol!

Nattie 02-24-2008 06:30 PM

We so could have told them that to begin with and saved a bunch of money they spent on research.

Les Mots 02-24-2008 07:27 PM

*whistles* No withdrawals here!

*notices that the book is not next to her*

WHERED IT GOOOOOOOOOOOO!?!?!?!?!?!? :O

*curls up in a fetal position and whimpers*

Gee, it'd be funny if they had like a Potter rehab. What would they do, I wonder? Use those purple robes that almost strangled Ron as straitjackets and use Umbridge quills to make us write, "Harry Potter is not my addiction"?

It was always true, just now the folks in the lab agree. *shrugs*

BanaBatGirl 02-24-2008 07:36 PM

Ha ha ha. Wow.

I hope my parents never see this research, because that would just add fuel to their fire. <_<

But anyways, it's SnitchSeeker that's addicting, not so much the books. I mean, they're humorous, they're entertaining, they're fun...but SS is better. ;)

And whatever, you can't compare addictive BOOKS to DRUGS. There's no medical drawbacks with being addicted to reading, are there? At least...not serious ones....:erm:

True, true and true.
I know SnitchSeeker is part of my real life... I guess what I mean is that I keep SnitchSeeker to myself when it comes to people I have known personally.

I guess it also depends on the situation. I've been brought up in a family where pretty much everything on the internet is considered dangerous, even if you're careful about what you say and do. My mother isn't really a computer person, and doesn't really understand that the internet can be safe.

My father once used SnitchSeeker against me in an argument that had nothing whatsoever to do with Harry Potter. He was yelling and all.

Basically, they both think I do have an addiction, and I disagree. So I just try keeping it to myself.

You're right to say I can't seperate real life and SS, because I spend hours at a time of my real life on SS.

tomfeltonsgf 02-24-2008 11:11 PM

That makes me crack up. I don't understand how someone could be going through withdrawal if we all wait long periods of time between the new books.

And as for not being able to sleep over a HP book, I think that's a bit ridiculous. Can't you just reread it? Or go to this website?

aliciahutchinson 02-25-2008 12:28 AM

LMAO I can totaly agree with everyone here, it's totally addictive and wicked!!, and I can't get through the day without even thinking about it all the time lol, I get teased so much by my friends, but it's all in good fun!!

Alohomora 02-25-2008 03:05 AM

Wow. They just declared Harry Potter addictive?

Pigwidgeon Took 02-25-2008 07:12 AM

I too, think that if they studied each member of SS, it would be more than 10%. Lol.

I wasn't trying to say about anyone else, just me :) But yeah, fearing technology is not good. It's how it's used that's key, not the device itself. So long as you're educated and sensible, you can't really go wrong.

SupaWeena 02-25-2008 03:11 PM

when you obsessd with harry potter who has the time or money for drugs?

Kitty Loves Steps 02-25-2008 06:11 PM

That is really interesting, but not something I haven't thought about before. I always find it hard after I'd read the most recent of the series to cope with the change. It was quite a strange feeling!

Paint.the.Limelight 02-25-2008 10:37 PM

I already knew that HP was addicting. But only 10%? How many people did they interview? When I read DH I locked myself in my room and yelled at anyone who came with in 5 feet of my door.

potterishfreak 02-26-2008 01:41 PM

i cant believe its only 10%

potterology 02-26-2008 03:11 PM

okay, so i haven't even been on this website in along time, but i couldnt' pass this thread up, because it totally relates to me.... how bad is that. while reading DH, i was so absorbed in the book that i barely ate. from lack of food, i actually turned out to be very sick and lost about 7 lbs in 2 days. that may not be bad for some people, but i am very petite to begin with, and it took me TWO MONTHS to gain all of the weight back!! i even went to the doctor to see if anything was seriously wrong, i explained that it happened while reading DH, and he just laughed and said that i was "obviously obsessed".... funny, but then again, dangerous... lol

AmberKedavra-x 02-26-2008 04:17 PM

TOTAL ADDICT!! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH BEING OBBSSESSED WITH HP...ITS A LITTLE SAD I GUESS BUT...WHO CARES!! :D

Edward Penguin 02-27-2008 01:42 PM

I'm glad that good research money was spent to determine that. :P

Of course of you ask those here, you may find the total a bit higher. :D

SupaWeena 02-27-2008 03:03 PM

i find it so funny that they have people who dedicate thier lives to reseaching harry potter..... HAHAHAHAHA. When you thnk about it that would make thsoe researchers obbsessed to !

Applehands 02-27-2008 03:10 PM

DUH!!!!
GOd .. i thought being addicted to HP was obvious...
my mom wouldnt let me read DH so i used to excuse for bathroom and then read it .. i practically read the whole book in the washroom
buahahah ;)

Serena 03-01-2008 11:25 PM

so true xD it's really addictive

Mari of the Ocean 03-07-2008 02:11 AM

wow that's actually quite scary!! I agree though some people in here and other pages are just addicted to Harry Potter... I belive I am one
