Ralph Fiennes not in Half-Blood Prince, hasn't signed for Deathly Hallows

In a recent interview during promotion for his new film , In Bruges, Ralph Fiennes, who portrays Lord Voldemort in the Potter films, said that he will not appear in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and has not yet signed up for the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Fiennes reminisces about his experience under Mike Newell's direction in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He admits that until the premiere of the film, he never really read the series. "[At the] premiere of the first one I did, I got a real sense of the extraordinary nature of it all."

Quote:

Capone (of Aint It Cool): Are you even in THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE?
RF: The one they're shooting now, no, I'm not in it.
Quote:

Capone: So it's just your nephew that's playing…
RF: My nephew is playing, I think just for a couple of scenes, the younger Voldemort [Tom Riddle]. I understand that the bulk of the bulk of the backstory of Voldemort is played by another, slightly older actor [Frank Dillane].
Quote:

Capone: And have you signed on for the final film yet?
RF: I have not yet, no.
Quote:

Capone: Has it been fun seeing yourself rendered serpentine for the two films your are in?
RF: Yeah, I particularly liked doing the first one. The second one, I think Voldemort is placed more as a sense in Harry's head, whereas in the first one I did with Mike Newell directing, there was that fantastic scene of his rebirth in the graveyard, which I enjoyed doing. I've enjoyed making the movies, but I was never an avid reader of the books. It just wasn't something I went towards. When I went to the premiere of the first one I did, I got a real sense of the extraordinary nature of it all.
Quote:

Capone: Were there small children in the audience screaming at the site of you?
RF: Yes! The volume of people and the noise and excitement; it was a huge phenomenon, the whole thing is definitely. And I actually think that the David Yates-directed one, the last one, was particularly good. I liked the style of it; it was grown up. and had an edge to it, the way it was shot and lit. It's a franchise that could so easily have not developed, but I think just filmicly it has been developed, and the producers have been very smart to keep it alive and present and edgy.

Half-Blood Prince releases on November 21st 2008. Deathly Hallows begins shooting this time next year.

Thanks to TLC for the tip!

cake.ninjak 03-04-2008 05:49 PM

:faint:

WHAT?!

FoxFire 03-04-2008 05:55 PM

What's the matter, Cake Man? As I recall it, Voldy (as he currently was) didn't appear in HBP. And if he did, it would clearly be one of those scenes they found disposable.

Maxilocks 03-04-2008 05:57 PM

I'm sure he'll come back for Deathly Hallows. ^_^

MoviegoerKinz 03-04-2008 05:57 PM

WHAT?!?! I thought he was playing Tom Riddle Sr. How can he not be in HBP, when the majority of the story involves him????

EmmaRiddle 03-04-2008 06:06 PM

^ Because Voldemort isn't seen in his present form at all in Half-Blood Prince. As Ralph said, and as has been announced, other actors have been cast to portray him in his younger form.

Loki 03-04-2008 06:16 PM

I understand why he isn't in the HBP but he have to be back for DH. They can't find another actor better than him for this role. I just can't imagine that. It feels like deja vu. Like the time they weren't sure about Gary Oldman *shruggs*

Mrs_ronald_weasley 03-04-2008 06:17 PM

he HAS to come back for DH!! must! must! must!

DalekDeatheater 03-04-2008 06:27 PM

*Whines* I want my Dark Lord!

xKikix 03-04-2008 06:49 PM

I bet he'll come back for DH.
They kind of need him and I'm sure they can afford to pay him whatever he wants.

Sarah Granger-Snape 03-04-2008 06:53 PM

I guess it kinds makes sense that he's not in it. I mean, HBP's focus is on Snape so, yeah. It'd be kind of pointless. They'll sign him for DH they have to. Otherwise they'd have a worldwide riot on their hands.

Blackened 03-04-2008 06:58 PM

I *hope* he comes back for DH.

Padie 03-04-2008 07:05 PM

He'd better be in DH

That's not it at all. The film doesn't start shooting for another 12 months. It's too early for casting. And as for the Gary thing, wasn't that to do with unions?

Kazters 03-04-2008 07:38 PM

old voldemort isnt in HBP really

but he is essental for DH

Evangeline 03-04-2008 08:08 PM

I hope he'll come back for DH!

Eclipsed 03-04-2008 08:09 PM

Lol, hope he comes back for DH.

Mrs Felton 03-04-2008 08:32 PM

I really hope he's back for DH, it wouldn't be the same without him.

Hermionespell 03-04-2008 08:41 PM

It's understandable that he's not in HBP since they're using other ages of Voldemort, though he'll definitely have to be in DH!

Yeah I understand this but they need him for the scenes where hes older and already become Voldemort.

He best come back for DH!

Fallon Chanel 03-04-2008 09:19 PM

I really hope he comes back for DH...

Zoe 03-04-2008 09:27 PM

I understand why he isn't in HBP, but he has to come back for DH. he's a really good Voldemort and he should finish his "Potter career" with DH.

RadcliffeWatson 03-04-2008 10:05 PM

Ralph makes the best Voldermort!! :( I hope he comes back .. !!

Antwone Thomas 03-04-2008 10:13 PM

Oh you people calm down. He's coming back for Hallows. No one has signed up to do the final film except for the trio I believe (because it was apart of their contracts).

griffin_girl 03-04-2008 10:19 PM

O______o so no Older Voldie?! NO!!!

I also hope he signs up for DH. he plays Voldemort really well!^_^

aliciahutchinson 03-04-2008 10:33 PM

He has no choice but to come back, if I have to come there myself and force him to lol jk jk but seriously, I sincerelyhope that he does sign upfor the DH!!!!!

Melted 4 HP 03-04-2008 10:35 PM

Dear Mike,
I can not believe you aren't filming Voldemort in Half Blood Prince. That's like serving a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich without jelly! That's like going to a Hannah Montana concert and only seeing Miley Cyrus! It just doesn't work! I will let it slide this time, Mr. Newell, but don't ever let this happen again. Thank you.
With all due respect,
Margaret

What I remember is that they thought about either re-casting the role at that time or not putting Sirius (Gary) at all. But for Ralph I really hope that he will be back at the time they do the casting thingy.

obsession8888 03-04-2008 11:37 PM

he MUST come back for DH. MUST!

dancerbookl 03-04-2008 11:54 PM

What kind of a sick thing is this????????

Double_Trouble 03-04-2008 11:55 PM

I hope he comes back for the DH! He plays the Dark Lord so well!!!

Ginny GL 03-04-2008 11:56 PM

As far as I remember, there's no Voldemort in HBP, but he's basic in DH, so let's hope Ralf is available for those scenes.

Slytherin Fox 03-05-2008 12:22 AM

A Harry Potter movie without Ralph Fiennes just doesn't seem complete, somehow. (Though I do understand that a much younger Voldemort is needed for HBP). I hope and trust that Ralph will be returning for Deathly Hallows.

MalfoyzBeloved 03-05-2008 12:26 AM

Yeah, I had to think for a few minutes but I do remember Voldemort was NEVER SHOWN in the books. Refered to, yes. Seen? No.
But I really do hope he plays Voldemort in D.H. He was amazing the first two times - I can't imagine anyone else being as good at being evil and just Voldemort in general as he is!

ladycplum 03-05-2008 01:11 AM

I;m going to go to "Oscar quote" for this one...if he doesn't come back for DH....
There Will Be Blood :lmao:

jesusfr33ke2010 03-05-2008 01:43 AM

purple·myst 03-05-2008 01:43 AM

Two sides were putting out two different stories. I think it was more likely they were toying with leaving him out than re-casting.

Mike Newell directed Goblet of Fire. That was it.

La La 03-06-2008 10:53 AM

uh gosh! i hope he comes back for DH!

loony 4 ........ 03-06-2008 05:44 PM

He'll have a large part in DH movie so he should come back.

laudienne 03-06-2008 10:21 PM

I get nervous when the actors who play integral roles aren't signed on yet for the upcoming movies .. now that he has played Voldemort more than once {heck, even once is enough} it is SO hard to imagine any other person playing Voldemort as well as he. Here's hoping he'll be back for Deathly Hallows!!

Pottermaniac 03-07-2008 12:51 AM

Quote:

hasn't signed for Deathly Hallows
That scared me.

Quote:

I have not yet, no.
That came as a relief.

I'm kind of sad he won't be in HBP, but can't wait to see him in DH.

Best actor of the movies, along with Alan Rickman, if you ask me.

A petition would do diddly squat, as those of us who signed the "Cast Jason Carter as Sirius Black" petition know.

Okay CALM DOWN EVERYONE! There's a very good reason why Ralph is not in HBP, and that's b/c the mutated adult Voldemort was not in the book at all, period. There is no reason for him to be in the movie. (Well, I could say the same for Katie Leung, but that's another topic). And don't forget, DH is not coming out until 2010, I'm pretty sure Ralph will be back. I don't think his nieces & nephews will forgive him if he doesn't come back, and I STRONGLY doubt the filmakers or studio will consider anyone else to play Voldemort. He IS Voldemort, plain and simple. :simm: :sevribbon:

bonnelass830 03-07-2008 04:00 AM

Wow...I really hope he comes back! I can't see anyone else playing Voldy! Come back Ralph!

FelixFortunatis 03-07-2008 01:16 PM

It's not that bad he doesn't come back HBP, he hasn't a big part as the Voldeort he's now, although he should play Tom Riddle Sr...
OMG, if he doesn't come back for DH...
That would be a disaster, I mean, when the confrontation between Voldemort And Harry takes place, another Voldemort appears :S

Riddikulus! 03-07-2008 05:53 PM

He HAS to sign for Deathly Hallows, I couldn't see anyone else portraying
The Dark Lord.
