| | Professors battle over whether Harry dying makes sense Some think Harry will live - others are convinced of his demise. Which is right? Well, according to some english and literature professors, the death of Harry Potter makes sense - and follows the path of great tales before it. Quote:
"If you look at the tradition of the epic hero ... there is this sort of pattern that the hero delivers people to the promised land but does not see it himself," said Lana Whited, professor of English at Ferrum College in Ferrum , Va., pointing out examples from King Arthur to Moses to Frodo.
Mary Lwfkowitz, a classics professor who is retired from teaching at Wellesley College, added: Quote:
"Greek mythology has plenty of examples, like Hercules, who was killed at the height of his strength."
"There's no long promise of happiness," she said. "You may have brief moments of glory and then the darkness comes."
However, in more literary terms, others don't quite see eye-to-eye. Tim Morris, who teaches English at the University of Texas at Arlington, is a prime example. Quote:
"Even though the series has a dark aspect to it, Rowling hasn't set it up in such a way that Harry paying the ultimate price would make sense. I don't get the sense that J.K. Rowling has set us up for that kind of sacrifice," he said. "The first six books haven't given a sense of that tragedy to me. It's generally hopeful."
Finally, Philip Ray, an associate professor of English at Connecticut College, wrapped everything up: Quote:
"I think it would be very unusual for a book like this to kill off the main character at a time when he's about to graduate from school. For Rowling to have put Harry Potter through all seven volumes just to kill him off, the point of all development would be wasted. Death strikes me as being the strangest ending of all."

I hope they're wrong. I don't want him to die. They have obviously given this a lot of thought

Maybe we'll see our kids come here one day.

Arguing for Harry’s death: The thing he wants most in the world (mirror of Erised in book 1) is to be with his family and they’re all dead. The only way to reward him is to kill him.
Arguing against Harry’s death: The last word in DH will be, “scar.” A pal of mine figures that Harry will look into a mirror and there is no scar.

First Year | GWFC/BWFC My <3 I have to agree with the two who say Harry won't die. The sacrifice will be different, just not death...it's too...classic.

to kill harry means to kill the series and JKR says she is pretty sure she will never do another sequal. "Pretty sure...." I don't think there is any way she could have doubts about it is she WERE killing harry. There would be no sequal to make.....just a thought.

I don't know what to think anymore.
I guess it doesn't really matter either way as long as Voldemort's gone once and for all.

That's really interesting. We never really know anything for sure, and no matter what I think we're all going to be surprised.
I don't think Harry's going to die. I never thought Jo would be able to just kill him off like that in 7th book. I can't even explain it, I just think he's. Not. Going. To. Die.
Although I wish he would. He's such a goody-goody.

Ok the last guy made sense...it would just be a waste of plot if Harry just died.
But someone has to be the tragic-hero and I doubt that J.K would give any one but Harry that title...I mean she worked for 10 years creating this epic character and it would be really akward if she let one of the other characters be off as the hero!!! I seriously dont know what to think anymore....I guess ill find out in about 2 weeks!!= )

At least, not anymore. Jo said in an interview about a week ago that it was for a long time but that it's not anymore. So we don't know anything now.
Also, I think there also might be a possibility that LV survives and starts ruling again? I dunno,, but I have this feeling that might happen too. After all, the series are dark and LV is very powerfull.
I think we'll have to wait and see if Harry dies or not. |
