| | | Potter fans recover from HBP 'hangovers' Newsday has an interesting article detailing how Potter fans are coping with the 'hangover' in the aftermath of ' Half-Blood Prince'. The article discusses some of the most popular theories on the net. Note: The article does contain HBP spoilers so please skip this thread if you've not finished the book. Quote:
Snape - good or evil? The answer to this hinges on whether you think Dumbledore's death was a pact between the two, a necessary sacrifice to ensure Voldemort does not suspect Snape's betrayal. Or whether you believe Snape was a double-double agent, convincing the wise but trusting Dumbeldore that he was defying Voldemort's orders to spy on Hogwarts, but in truth keeping his promise to the Dark Lord.
Then there is the "crush" theory. Rowling has hinted there was someone else at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents died. And it was out of character for cranky Voldemort to give Lily Potter so many chances to step aside before he attempted to kill her son.
Was Snape at Godric's Hollow, and was it at his request that Voldemort agreed to spare Lily? And is that why Snape resents Harry so deeply - because Harry, with his mother's green eyes, reminds Snape of the woman who died in order for Harry to live?

Hangover, schmangover. It's more like a sense of emptiness after a funeral.

I agree and I don't agree with this. But I think I have gone though too much of Snape-debating. And one of my theories involves Snape being TOO on Godric Hollow the night the Potters were murdered (YEAH! I WAS THE FIRST TO BRING IT UP! HA! You know I'm right ) but NOT involving Lily Potter/Evans >.< *shrugs* I'm rather shocked that so many people think Dumbledore's judgement was THAT wrong. Whoever insist Snape is evil is very much not too trustful of Dumbledore's capacities.
Hangover... is a good description, though. Mine was caused, I believe, by the sudden and over-exploited intoxication of romantic drama I did NOT need. Mind, I do enjoy a romantic novel once in a while... but HP is far from a romantic novel! And this was Waaaaaaaay too much. *kicks Hermione and Ron (even though is shipper)* I didn't like
the rhythm either but that's another story...

The problem with the sparing Lily theory--why would Lord Voldemort have agreed to a request from his Death Eater, especially one like that?
Because he was the one who told LV about the prophecy.

i think that snape is evil but he does do some wierd things. he tryed to save harry's life in the first book when harry is going to fall off his broom and even if people say it was because james saved snapes life snape could of just ignored wat quirrel was doing!

That theory might be true but i honestly don't believe the Godric's Hollow part. (My hangover lasted abut a few days after HBP came out...btw) But! I don't see Snape as the 'loving type' anymore. Maybe he is compassionate about people, maybe not. I dunno. I'm having an epic bttle in my brain determining whether or not snape is good or evil... i think he has an evil exterior but he really does have a twinge of good inside him. Afterall, it's not like Jo put a large sign over him through out the series saying 'My name is Snape! Hate me! I am Evil!' I have hope that he isn't totally evil...

I'm still having a hangover, just can't get over how good HBP is. I do like the Snape and Lily theory I feel it's very possible. Snape and Lily are both good at potions. :ballcap:

My hangover was due to the large number of tears shed then the massive headache that followed and the emptiness of so many unanswered Q's. But that emptiness can be filled with many many theories (conspiracy theorist )and these never occured to me before.
Did LV actually trust snape enough to not kill Lily on his request? maybe coz snape did inform him of the prophecy.
Is ol' snapey totally evil? maybe but I don't think so but he'll have a **** of a time trying to get anyone on the "good side's" trust again!!!
Is Dumby gone for ever? maybe but I think he has a plan so we will see.........

i had the hangover for about 3 days after cried tears for proff D.but still i somehow think snape is on the good side.i am not a great fan of snape.but still i do think he is good. do you have any theory for snape so strongly professing "dont call me a coward." because if he played the role of a successful spy he must have some nerve doesn't it?but then again in the first book we come to know that professor dumbledore was a gryffindorr. and we know that even neville was brave enough to stand in froint of the death eaters.so obviously a man of dumbledore caliber would never pleade for his life.he was a WISE in every sense.and BRAVE in every sense.since both snape and dumbledore were gerat legillmens they spoke through the mind. and hence pleaded snape to kill him instead of forsaking the unbreakabel wow.maybe indirectly snape can direct harry to the rest of the horcruxes once he has won some amount of trust in voldemorts eye.and about snape convincing voldemort to spare lily's life,do you really think voldemort would depend on anyone to influence his decision. i think no. what about you?

Funny, in that same interview I swear she didn't answer wether or not Snape was evil, as in a double agent, or a triple agent, or even quadruple if you must...and she made a point of saying she loved the theories...so no. You're no more right than I am at this point. =P but thank you for playing. As a side note... He's cold, calculating, and devious. Compassion? That's open to interpretation. =P And you're so biased. Quote:
Jo also said he has been loved in the past and when saying Lupin liked Lily, refused to confirm if Snape also admired her.
Which answers nothing. Because if she did/didn't it would be an admission of one or the other...c'mon Marce, let's be realistic, she isn't going to give us all the answers in an interview, not when there's tons of mystery and a whole book still waiting. Quote:
Otts, my friend, nothing is black and white. Snape is most definitely GREY.
*pets Marce* True, not everything is b&w, but some things are, and you'll learn this with age. I know evil when I see it. Quote:

Bah, clues. Who needs clues when he *Teddy claps a hand over Ottery's mouth so he won't give it all away*

But this theory is a really good one! It would be so interesting to find out that he loved lily!
But then why did he talk to her like that in "Snape's worst memory"?

^^ i think that was because he couldn't even admit it himself that he liked a muggleborn girl.
wow i never thought of those theories! they're good ones... i think that maybe snape could have done that, but it is still hard for me to forgive snape, as he killed dumbledore...
and the hagover is still going on!

Hogwarts RPG Name: Lenovo Acer First Year | After I read The Half Blood Prince I was in shock. I couldn't talk to anyone. I pretty much walked around with my mouth hanging open in awe. Normally I re read the books immediatly after I have read them the first time. I have yet to re read HBP, though my hang over or shock is wearing off and I might be up to reading it again soon.

I'm still feeling a slight effect of the 'hangover'. I read the first couple books in the series really slow so I wouldn't be in this position. I wasn't up to date (having read all published books) until the fifth one! I had such control once! But now, I raced through HBP in less then a day and now I'm like *sigh* now what do I do? Wait! I hate waiting! *sigh*
Re-reading the whole series.
Looking forward to the GOF movie.
Good article. That used to be my local newspaper before I moved upstate. *sigh*

hmm....interesting...never thought of that.... does that mean snape was in love w/ lilly dispite of her being a muggle born and he being a slytherin?
