| | | Potter fans abandon pet owls (UPDATED)
According to the Flintshire Wildlife and Pet Rescue Centre, Harry Potter fans have been purchasing owls, and learning the hard way that birds of prey do not make good pets for muggles.
The rescue centre is sheltering nearly a dozen barn and tawny owls. Quote:
Co-owner of the rescue centre, Joy Pierce Jones, said: "Harry Potter was definitely one of our biggest downfalls.
"People have been phoning up rescue centres, wanting to buy an owl for their children.
"Owls just aren't suitable as pets and while they are generally friendly, they do have their off days and can bite.
"They can quite easily take your eye out or ear off."
Source: Evening Leader
UPDATE: The BBC have an audio interview with one of the representatives from the centre. It can be listened to here (Note: You must be in the U.K. for it to work). |

ok seriously, my daughters have two stuff owls, you know, the ones that look like Hedwig and Pigwidgeon. But people buying real owls are borderline insane. They probably thought they could stick letters onto their legs and save on postage......

This is kind of funny and sad at the same time. Funny that people would go out and buy an owl just because they're a Harry Potter fan, but sad for the owls for being cooped up and then abandoned. I find it odd that a parent would let their child have one; shouldn't they have enough sense to know that owls are not domesticated pets, they're birds of prey. There are these wonderful little things called stuffed animals you can get. It's a good thing that there's a rescue center helping out. |

they said that in the 3rd HP movie special features. Owls don't make good pets! I absolutely love owls but i'd never have one because they would be to hard to take care of. That's one of the downfalls of the harry potter movies. |

For the record, this has definitely happened with other books/movies as well... Dalamations in 101 Dalamation, Clownfish in Nemo, ext. So it's really unsurprising...

it's weird how most parents get their kids the pets they want just because they (the kids) see cool things the animals do on movies or books. Like if your kid sees Finding Nemo and wants a clownfish and flush it down the toilet to put it in the ocean or if the kid watches Prince Caspian and the kid wants a mouse so he/she can teach it how to sword fight. Really lame.
What my point is is that if your kid wants a certain pet after they see that animal on a movie or in a book, either wait until that kid is responsible or just give it a stuffed animal of that pet.

Hedwig was always biting Harry, drawing blood sometimes, so I guess they should have known.

I feel so bad for those owls. Some people are just so stupid. You would think they would look into having an owl before they go out and get one. But then again most people don't think alot.

Those poor owls! I can't understand why you would want a pet owl. Don't they sleep during the day...? That wouldn't be a very fun pet.

Oh man. That's kinda of crazy. Really now, an owl for a pet? They need to fly around in large spacious areas!

Awwwww, that’s so sad. Poor owls. People should know that birds of prey don’t make good pets. Key word being birds of prey!! Yes, owls are gorgeous, but stuffed animals are easer to take care of. I would know, I have 4! |

I never thought about wanting to buy an owl even if I do want one. It's just not right for the owl.

| Greyhound Rescuer ♥ I've had birds all my life and have huge big avaries in my garden, but I don't think I'd even consider getting an owl, I think that's taking it a bit far :|
It's a real shame on the birds |

Owls are really powerful creatures. I've held a couple, of various sizes, and fed a few, and that put me off having one right away. As beautiful as they are, things can very easily go awry.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Jacqueline Kitching Third Year | I find that if you like owls, it's good to work in rescue centers, I help a friend out with her centre... I really enjoy it but the owls do have "off days" which makes them really crabby.
