M. Night Shyamalan hot on Potter’s trail

Sixth Sense film director M. Night Shyamalan, who, as we told you last week, regrets turning down the chance to direct Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, said in an interview yesterday that he’s eager to take the helm of the last HP film and already knows the type of feel he’d go for :

Quote:

I want to see a serious emotional conflict, like if Ron goes to the wrong side. Power has such a double-edged sword. I want the audience to feel that for a moment.
In reference to comments he made last week about the HP material needing to be "handed over, adoption papers and everything," Shyamalan explained to TLC:

Quote:

I would be the greatest protector of an author's stuff. Especially things that I respect, that I know there's inherently magic in it. I would be very wary of screwing it up, so I would be very careful ... There's no way that it would be missed by lack of effort or lack of care or lack of attention. I would be giving it every single iota ... I would cherish it.

becca.123 07-18-2006 06:20 PM

Cool! Perhaps he will be able direct another HP movie!

:jump: FIRST TO POST!!! :hello:

Disneymaniac 07-18-2006 06:23 PM

This is good. His work is quite good. Plus I think it would good for him to do the last one!

alyssa_hilary 07-18-2006 06:27 PM

Cool, I hope he gets the chance to do the 7th.

Raider 07-18-2006 06:27 PM

Honestly... I hope he doesnt. I dont like his movies much although The Sixth Sense was very good.

OtterySt.Catchpole 07-18-2006 06:28 PM

Hollywood needs real directors like me! Men with vision & ♥ for Rupert er I mean Ron

I've never thought he was that great a director, in truth I don't think Hollywood has any good directors outside of early 80's Spielberg (not now Spielberg) and Peter Jackson. Popular? Maybe but Alfred Hitchcock is dead and I don't think most of the kiddies would know Billy Wilder or John Huston ...

But yeah, after that Ron comment ... I think he should soak his head and the WB should hire Peter Jackson to direct, then at least we'd be guaranteed a three hour movie  and he's dealt with elves before ... :poke:

No Mr. Shyamalan, your stuff's too weird and not really that interesting. Go do a remake.

EDIT: Why don't we get the director for Pirates of the Carribbean or Superman Returns, or even Charlie's Angels ... then we'd get action ...

Okay so Tarantino and the guy who directed Superman are good too ... but that's it for directors oh, and McG.

harry__dan 07-18-2006 06:28 PM

hmmm he sounds nice. Well we'll see if he would get the last HP moveeeeeeeee

Lily Potter 07-18-2006 06:30 PM

I don't know, he might make it more scary than it is. He tends to make scary movies.

I agree completly.

*gasp* Why didnt I think of him before *headesk* Hes my favorite director!
*rallies for Pete Jackson to direct HP*

Padie 07-18-2006 06:39 PM

Well, I liked his films and he does seem to really like to direct the HP films so I wouldn't mind ^_^

Si 07-18-2006 06:52 PM

Shymalan would be good for the darkness of book 7 but if there's some fight scenes in that book, I demand Tarantino direct. They could co-direct but I doubt that will happen. It would be good for him to do HP, but I'm not too sure of his other works. The Sixth Sense was good but I hated The Village. I don't know where I stand on this. I want co-directors lol

EDIT: Gore Verbinski would be a great director for HP. If he can do PotC, he can do HP. I want him haha

Sama 07-18-2006 06:54 PM

*hmmmm* that'd be interresting....

daniel_radcliffe_fan_4eva 07-18-2006 06:56 PM

he seems quite keen to direct it and as long as he wants to make the film at least 3 and a half hours long he has my vote. :P

GryffindorGirl13 07-18-2006 07:00 PM

I think he would do a great job with the film. And I'm not suprised he's regretting not directing the first film either.

Blackened 07-18-2006 07:05 PM

Interesting, though I don't think that will happen. I do enjoy the way he talks about the possibility of directing a HP movie, however.

x*[.BooM.]*x 07-18-2006 07:06 PM

I think he would put a good edge to the movie if he were to direct it. And contrary to popular belief I thought The Village was pretty fricken gewd. And the Sixth Sense. I dunno, I think the movies lack a sinister feel, somethin edgy and heart stopping......he may well be the man to add that extra "oompff".

Epona 07-18-2006 07:18 PM

I really hope M. Night Shamalan soes direct a Harry Potter film. It would be an excellent movie.

Ginpotter 07-18-2006 07:25 PM

He want to direct HP7...I think he must think in HP6 first..

roxy<3hp 07-18-2006 07:27 PM

to bad he hasn't directed a hp film. I think it would of be intersting to watch. Maybe he will.

*harrypotter's girl* 07-18-2006 07:33 PM

That would be cool if he directed an HP film...I guess!!!!

I'm completely agree with that!
I like his movies. I don't know about the romance part though. :erm:

ezzer123 07-18-2006 07:54 PM

I think he'd be gr8. Please can we have him?!

chowderHPfanatic 07-18-2006 08:03 PM

haha. he sounds a bit desperate for the job. although, who wouldnt?! haha.

mione_girlgwp 07-18-2006 08:18 PM

Cool beans! :) Maybe he will get it

siriusly_loving_gary 07-18-2006 08:18 PM

I think it'd be good if he directed the film. He'd make it as dark and creepy as it deserves to be.

Totally agree!!!!!! I would want him too to make the film coz it's supposed to be gloomy

BrightestWitch 07-18-2006 08:34 PM

Eeeek! So excited! He would be perfect for an HP film. He is brilliant!!! :loved: His movies can be so dark, and that is just what the HP films need. They have always been dark but now more than ever as we get farther into the series. :shifty:

Abby Radcliffe 07-18-2006 08:45 PM

I'm sure he could do an excellent job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jojogali 07-18-2006 08:59 PM

Interesting theory but I don't really see that happening, anyway he would be a marvelour director since he did the 6th sense movie and it was really touchy.

Brina gurl 07-18-2006 09:17 PM

I can picture this... but then I'd prolly get very spooked. as i do with most his films. But I'll still go if he does or doesn't direct the films.

prettyinpink 07-18-2006 09:47 PM

Hmmm...i wonder what it would be like!

Kazters 07-18-2006 10:03 PM

err NO i woudlnt have him directing the potter film because i want to actualy understand what is going on...

Ellen4Potter 07-18-2006 10:12 PM

Really cool :D , I think he can be a good director for the movie

OtterySt.Catchpole 07-18-2006 10:13 PM

Is everyone off their gourds or why Ottery should direct HP6

I wouldn't want to direct book 7 because I want to give Rupert pointers on smooching Lav-Lav :shifty: but I digress ...

I don't think M. Night would work because ... well c'mon ... he's suspenseful I'll give him that (of course so was Hitchcock but he could write well too) ...

I mean Bryan Singer can tell a good story grounded on characters.

Gore Verbinsky *thanx Si* is good with action and like I said maybe Johnny Depp could show up  that would be so cool ...

And Peter Jackson is a true genius, something he displayed evidently and clearly in King Kong, which was a brilliant film without orcs. Personally I can't wait to see what else he's going to do next. EVANGELION Please! I wish ♥

I don't think he could handle the romantic aspect, and he's never adapted anything before by his own admission ... all the directors I've named have never done anything original  that sounds worse than it is ... LOL

Tarantino would rock for the violence but then all you kiddies couldn't go see it ... and he'd totally tweak the script and we couldn't quote Ron in the 7th film because they'd all start "!@*#@$%$!!$#%$# bloody hell ... " or something like that ...

Have you all even seen Shyamalan's movies?

He's a concept director. HP movies should be character films. Which is why PoA was brilliant ... GoF was spectacular but if Peter Jackson directed, it would be both. *fires the cannons*

rupertsgirl67 07-18-2006 10:18 PM

Yes, that would be interesting. But see, the thing is, his movies are weird and disturbing. Think Harry Potter turning into like some weird version with things from the Lady in the Water. That'd be mucked up.

His fimls are okay, but soo not Harry Potter. I think its true taht he would stick to the book, but then he can't be himself when he makes it, and that would be weird.

So no, Mister Shyamalan, i would not enojy the movie if you made it, sorry. "pets*

I hope not!! Have you seen a perview of latest movie? It looks stupid!! He would screw HP up!!

ilovehermione244 07-18-2006 10:48 PM

how about you all hush it and let w/e happens happen. sheesh!

slythringurl04 07-18-2006 11:24 PM

i hope he doesnt get to direct, i dont like any of his movies, only sixth sense
besides no one will take h.p. seriously if he directs it.

redrooster 07-18-2006 11:29 PM

That would be so cool!

I love his movies! I wamt to see Lady in the Water. And I'd love to see what he would do to the last HP movie.

OtterySt.Catchpole 07-18-2006 11:36 PM

I still say Peter Jackson would be best and he doesn't need armies of orcs ...

It's called freedom of speech, maybe they don't have it where you live but they do where I do ... if you want him to direct so bad say why but don't stiffle dissent ...

No Mr. Shyamalan ... I don't think you could direct it well, an idea and a few off visuals do not a great director make ... and I'd like a cogent story too ...

Brittany Weasly 07-19-2006 12:40 AM

I don't know he might be good for the movie.

MissFit 07-19-2006 12:52 AM

M. Night Shyamalan's got some weird movies... o.O It'd be interesting to see how he'd turn out an HP movie...

cgold 07-19-2006 01:05 AM

Okay, he wants Ron to go to the dark side. To even think it means he's not my type of director. I liked him before but he's totally turned me off now. I don't want another director trying to destroy Ron's character. We have enough to deal with the screenwriter already. I hope he doesn't get it!

Federov4eva 07-19-2006 01:32 AM

I don't care who directs unless their good and we get the movies and the books a.s.a.p!

HP Girl22 07-19-2006 01:41 AM

That's a whole different spin on things

S_potter 07-19-2006 02:05 AM

I honsetly don't kno what 2 think. I liked the 6th Sense but i don't think his 'style' is right

I like that he said that. If he does get the chance to helm HP, it would definitely be interesting. What I like about Potter is the emotional current that runs through the veins of the books, and it would take a really good director to balance that as well as the other elements that make up the HP world.

I'm just in a bit of conflict whether I want him to direct HBP or Book 7 in the end. He's got a reputation--not really a bad one, but I guess he has been sterotyped too much as a director of "weird/creepy" films. I don't want any of the HP movies to be branded that way, so as for Shyamalan helming any of the last films--we'll see. He does sound like he really, really wants it though.

HP is the BoMbDiGiTy 07-19-2006 03:14 AM

i'm intrested to see if he gets to direct the hp movie

Heh I liked The Sixth Sense. Shymalan would give it the eerie feel of it but I think he'd need a co-director to handle other things.

You're weeelcome Ottery. *snuggles*

Verbinski would be perfect for HP. Look what he's done with PotC! I love his work.

I don't think Jackson will direct any HP movie ever because he did LoTR but he would be good for it.

Pfft I'll be old enough to go see movie 7 if Tarantino directs by then. I really want him to do it for the action scenes. Verbinski + Tarantino = perfect movie

hermione4 07-19-2006 03:54 AM

I think that he would do well with the later books since they are darker.

I would love to see what he would do with them.

Griffiths123 07-19-2006 05:36 AM

hmm well thats interesting

Rachael harris 07-19-2006 07:46 AM

cool it will be great :woot:

Lady_Voldemort 07-19-2006 08:10 AM

*fingers crossed* He's great with creepy and atmospheric type movies!! He would do the story of HBP justice...especially with the scene in the tower between Dumbledore, Snape and Malfoy...

Kazters 07-19-2006 10:59 AM

yes let ottery direct it lol it will all be rupert!

I think his films are OK to apoint but they dont stand up to second viewings

futuremrsmalfoy 07-19-2006 11:26 AM

thats pretty cool

britishgrl09 07-19-2006 01:09 PM

CooL! He will definatley get the chance mate!

SuperJess! 07-19-2006 01:41 PM

M. Night Shyamalan Is A Fantastic Director, I Hope He Does Get A Chance To Direct A Harry Potter Movie I Think He Could Direct Half Blood Prince! Just My Opinion.

Maxilocks 07-19-2006 02:05 PM

He seems very desperate to direct that movie. But then, seeing how famed the series is, I'm not surprised. And I don't think anyone else is either.

From what I've heard, he isn't an excellent director. And even though I pity him [Okay, so maybe I exxagerate, but still] I hope someone really good gets to direct both the sixth and seventh movies.

Maxie

scarlet woman 07-19-2006 03:04 PM

I've never heard of him and I don't think I've ever seen any of his films either! I do love the fact that all the Potter films have different directors though, maybe he would do a good job!

muggled 07-19-2006 03:26 PM

I'm actually interested to see how he'd direct the film. He really is a good director.

Hermionespell 07-19-2006 03:58 PM

I really hope he directs it. He would be absolutely amazing!

Mrs Felton 07-19-2006 04:12 PM

I'd like to see him direct a HP film. I loved Sixth Sense, and it'd be good to have alot of emotion in the film.

Eclipsed 07-19-2006 05:06 PM

Maybe he'll get a chance to do one of the last two movies...

griffin_girl 07-19-2006 07:13 PM

omg!!! cool!!! he did lady in the water right??? the last potter film would be the scariest so that would be fantabuluos if he did it!!!

GinnyWeasley07 07-19-2006 07:21 PM

I don't know if i'd like him doing HP, his movies are a bit ...weird and his endings leave something to be desired(for me anyway). But if he ever does HP, I would still go see it, I mean HP is HP!!

golden_quill2010 07-19-2006 07:31 PM

Shamalan is iffy

I guess that M. Night Shamalan could either make or break the final movie. I mean there's the whole "he could make this one big flop of a Harry Potter movie" idea where he makes the atmosphere of the overall movie too erie and strange, but he could also give the movie just the right amonut of kick. I'm still disappointed with the portrayal of Azkaban and how SO MUCH was removed! I'm not so sure about Shamalan. But I DID love Chris Columbus's direction of the first two movies. Who knows.... I also heard that Spielburg regrets dissing Harry Potter and wants to direct Movie 7 too! Do you think he will?

argentinaz_angel 07-19-2006 09:33 PM

He could be a good director I think, how about HBP?:shifty:

Gionta1222 07-19-2006 11:19 PM

I think he would be a great director. He would stay true to the book and wouldnt change a lot of things. If he directed the final 2 movies, he would do a great job and everybody would be amazed by his work. I know I would be.

Musicroxmysox2009 07-20-2006 02:06 AM

That could be cool, I definatly think it would turn out pretty dark if he did it.

Olivia Granger 07-20-2006 02:07 PM

Wow! I haven't seen a ton of his stuff but I ahve heard it's good. I hope he does direct the 7th movie but I was sorta hoping he would direct the 6th one...

slytherin's_advent 07-21-2006 01:44 AM

If Speilburg does HP7, I will be the happiest child alive. He would do the movie justice.

wild_prairie_gal 07-22-2006 04:58 AM

I love M. Night Shamalan movies, and that's saying something. The reason it's so important is becuase I"m not a fan of scary or suspence movies. Give me an old comedy any day. I saw the Village and the sixth sence and I loved them. It would be really interesting to see his dramatic eye put a spin on the last Harry Potter. I could guarontee that if he did it, there would be no left sitting in their seat, they would be hanging the entire time.

I also like the fact that he liked to show himself in all his movies he makes, if only for a second. Can't wait to find out if he gets the spot. He get's two thumbs way up from me.

Katie Yates 07-22-2006 04:58 PM

I think he is a very good director and I like his movies. He seems very keen to do a HP movie and so I think he should get to do one of the last two. He seems to think he should stick to the book and we're always moaning that the directors don't so if he does to a movie it should be very loyal and enjoyable!

FLEUR 07-30-2006 04:57 AM

thats good see more like passion n stuff

Fortune_Cookie 08-01-2006 07:06 AM

I hope he goes for it I think he would do awesome job filming the last film in the series .
