John Kenney talks turning down Potter

John Kenney, an editor who declined to publish 'Philosopher's Stone', has spoken in The International Herald Tribune about why he chose to turn down Potter. He insists that he does not regret the decision and refers to parts of the book as 'drivel'.

Quote:

February, perhaps March of the next year, I received a call from J.K. Rowling herself. She asked if I had had a chance to read her manuscript. I'm always embarrassed when fledgling writers get me on the phone. Most are sad, lonely people with no real means of income.

I said I enjoyed her work a great deal, but that it didn't meet our needs at this time - the standard industry brushoff. There was a pause and I thought the line had gone dead when I heard laughing. "Mr. Wortham," she said with a light British accent. "I was calling as a courtesy, actually. To tell you that I sold the book. To Scholastic. For..." The line went dead. Or perhaps I passed out. I forget which.

My wife left me. Did I mention that?
Quote:

At lunch some time later I overheard our chief executive talking about the success of the Rowling book. So I happened to mention, with a chuckle, that we'd had a chance to buy it.

Why is it that one remembers a long pause? "Chief?" I said, though to this day I don't know why, as no one called him that. "You what?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly. "May I speak with you in my office?"

Hahahaha! Poor poor man.

Kazters 08-24-2005 06:42 PM

Lol did he get a slap on the wrost of his P45?

EmmaRiddle 08-24-2005 06:43 PM

There's a distinct tone of sarcasm throughout the piece -- which is actually funny. Took me a while to realise that as a result of that meeting, he got fired and now works with fish guts as a result. Although I doubt that's true. Satire is brilliant but I very much doubt he doesn't regret it.

Anirock 08-24-2005 06:44 PM

I really feel sorry for him:head:. What if he accepted:eyebrows:? He would have been very rich...

OtterySt.Catchpole 08-24-2005 06:45 PM

Poor guy...*sighs* But you said no? What were you on???

<_<His wife must be super hard core Harry Potter fan if she left him because of that...Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude.<_<

And there are no parts in any of the books that are dribble. None.<_<

allucha 08-24-2005 08:24 PM

well, its his fault but at least we get a good laugh about it
*rolls around laughing uncontrollably on the floor*

WhereHagger 08-24-2005 08:26 PM

If he thought it was drivel, he must be dumb.

mbenitez919 08-24-2005 08:31 PM

but from what it seems, turning down big books runs in his family, his father turned down goodnight Moon, what an idiot he also turned down cold mountain, he doens;t know what a good book is even if it hit him in the face,

sweetbaby 08-24-2005 08:43 PM

Well... for every great idea, there's at least one person who thought it was rubbish and turned it down. Things would have been quite differently, I imagine, had he published it.

That he was fired and his wife left him seem to be events of his own making. What man would brag about turning down the 'next big thing'? And I imagine his wife left him more because he got fired and now works in a fish market than because he actually turned down HP.

Honestly, can you blame her? It would take alot for me to stay with a man like that, anyway.

tonks26 08-25-2005 12:06 AM

He does not regret the decision? Now this is what we call delusional. Poor guy!

Wonderstruck 08-25-2005 12:43 AM

 That is really rather funny. I would be upset if I had turned her down, but we can't dwell on the past or else we won't be able to move forward. That is rather sad that his wife left him though. I hope him turning down her book wasn't the main reason. If it was then that's horrible.

VenusAngel21 08-25-2005 01:07 AM

CedricBlack 08-25-2005 04:52 AM

well i dont really feel sorry for him..i mean he was the one that declined the book..it is sort of his fault

Meandering 08-25-2005 05:34 AM

I think you guys are being totally horrible about this. There's no need to laugh and be exultant over it. To use a cliche: ' one man's meat is another man's poison', some people just don't like Harry Potter, finding it boring. So what? LoTR is exceedingly dull - it took me ages to plow through it, and it's hailed as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just because his taste in books isn't the same as ours doesn't give you lot the right to insult him. It's a pity that this man lost his job, and his wife over one mishap, but if she'd leave him over something as stupid as that, she definitely isn't worth it. The whole article had a certain dark humour to it - and I'm not sure if it's not a joke - but I'm disgusted by the way some people reacted to it.

cheeky_weasley 08-25-2005 05:35 AM

Omg I"m In Stiches

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the fact that Jo call him back to ahhh ummmmm....... *cough* rub his nose in it!! Makes you love her all the more right!!!!!!! :rotfl:

purplebublz 08-25-2005 10:44 AM

Hehe, me thinks he's a little bit bitter he didn't snap it up!!

I wonder if he's read anymore of them?

froeth 08-25-2005 12:16 PM

This fellow truly makes me giggle. He must be a very strong man to look back upon such a grevious mistake and laugh about it.

I found the whole article very entertaining. His tongue-in-cheek writing style had me hooked from the first paragraph. I'm glad he's written a book. I'll probably at least give it a shot.

~*HermioneGranger*~ 08-25-2005 03:17 PM

Haha it is really his loss. His choice, his problem, his mistake ;) As if you would ever turn away something like HP, must have been delusional.

If this is true, he should´ve let his wife read the book before turning it down :rotfl:

Poor guy ... But is this story actually true? I mean no reasonable person would have mentioned such thing to their boss, if the boss is talking about the book sales at the moment ... Oh, I understand ... He definitely wasn´t in Slyherin :P

mysterious 08-25-2005 04:27 PM

oh, poor poor guy.. if i were him, i'd regret it so much that i wouldn't be able to live! think about the money he lost because of one simple decision!

ginny382 08-25-2005 07:24 PM

idiot

i guess he was polite, but he doesn't have very good taste, does he? i mean, i bet he was the only person in the entire world who would have turned that once in a lifetime oppurtunity down! what a fool!

Delphia_Hope 08-25-2005 08:27 PM

Haha! Crackhead.

Riyon-BlueEyes 08-26-2005 01:56 AM

I bet he feels really sorry now. He missed out on one of the best selling books.

indi4n 08-26-2005 05:39 PM

O well, shame on him, his loss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hahaha

A.Sirius.Itch 08-26-2005 06:30 PM

This poor man, not only did his dad turned down 'Goodnight Moon', and he HP, but he also turned down 'Cold Mountain'. Although, from my perspective, it might have been these combined losses (Cold Mountain and Harry Potter), that lost him his job. I know if I had been his boss, after Cold Mountain came out, I'd have kept a close eye on him to see he didn't stuff up again.

I truly feel sorry for him, as if losing something as big (and I'm not talking money wise), as Harry Potter isn't going to make him just a tad bitter. Again... poor bugger.

pete4109 08-26-2005 08:08 PM

LovedLoser 08-26-2005 11:52 PM

xwitchx 08-27-2005 02:17 AM

Hah! Just by reading those quotes I can tell that it would be an extremely funny passage to read....the poor guy who let such an amazing story slip through his fingers. I bet he's still quite sour about it.....I'd love to meet him and brandish my copies of HBP and the PoA film...possibly also the price tags...Aw that'd be so mean of me.....*chuckle*...yeah I still think I'd do it....bwahahaha....

very entertaining ^_^

Lady_Jezz 08-27-2005 09:45 AM
