JKR named one of '20 people who changed childhood'

Child Magazine has announced their list of 20 People Who Changed Childhood. The list honors "innovators in the fields of education, entertainment, medicine, and more who forever altered what it means to be young in America." J.K. Rowling has been placed fifth and is credited with sparking a new interest in reading among kids. She appears with other names such as Walt Disney, The Beatles, Dr. Seuss, and Michael Jordan.

The article has this to say about Ms. Rowling:

Quote:

J. K. Rowling

Before J.K. Rowling's bespectacled boy wizard went off to study at Hogwarts, some parents feared their kids would never enjoy reading. Once Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone hit U.S. bookstores in 1998, followed by five more installments, parents found their kids couldn't get enough of Rowling's fantasy adventure novels, some longer than 600 pages. To date more than 300 million Harry Potter books have sold worldwide; they crowded The New York Times bestseller list for so long that the newspaper created a separate children's list. "The Harry Potter books not only sparked an explosion of interest in reading," says Lisa Von Drasek, the children's librarian at the Bank Street College of Education in New York City, "they inspired kids to go out and discover other great books too."

Wow! That's really cool! I loved it! J.K. Rowling is one of my idols, so I think she deserves it!

Agos* 09-19-2006 08:38 PM

That's amazing! And so right. I mean before Harry Potter a lot of people didn't even touched a book!

LadyNerd 09-19-2006 08:44 PM

Okay! I am sorry for all you Michael Jordan fans but I really don't think he needs to be above JK Rowling! I mean he was an influential person but to me, not more than JKR.

I think JKR also taught many adults to find their inner child/spirit and to rediscover reading, to rediscover fantasy and to rediscover lazy days on the couch with the book as time passes by ever so quicly when you are so involved in your novel that it feels real to you. Thanks JKR for giving me a love for reading, AGAIN.

One_Less_Then_Molly 09-19-2006 08:56 PM

That is just way too awesome!! :woot: Personally I think she deserves 1st place, but I'm glad she's on the list! There are certain "groups" that will say she shouldn't be on that list because of their "views." But even they have to admit, even if they don't like the books, it HAS gotten children interested in reading again.
