J.K. Rowling's agents request new Steve Vander Ark book

The Times Online are reporting that J.K. Rowling's agents have requested an advance copy of Steve Vander Ark's newest book, In Search of Harry Potter, a travel guide, prior to it being published.

The book deals with locations that the author believes to have inspired Jo in her writing of the Harry Potter novels - he even claims to have found the location of Hogwarts.

The check is being carried out to ensure that, unlike the Harry Potter Lexicon, it does not breach copyright laws. The book is due out next month, published by Methuen.

Quote:

“This is my own writing about my own experiences and I can’t imagine there will be any problem with this book,” he [Steve] said.

Peter Tummons, managing director of the publishers Methuen, said: “This is a travel book . . . written in full by himself after his travels . . . There is nothing in it that would cause any distress.”

Ow..that would be an interesting book! I hope it's not like the other one...

Ms_Nessa24 09-14-2008 03:16 PM

She has Every Right to want to Read the CopyWrite before It is Released!Especially Because Of what Happened Prior....If It Ends Up Truley being his Own experiences good for Him!

Wow, moving on quickly...leave the uglyness behind.

If there shouldnt be a problem of that book breaching any copyright issues, then there shouldnt be a problem to give them a copy to read through.
They should be concious about why Jo isnt going to be so trusting, when it comes to SVA atleast.

And i find it funny that its a new publisher. Huh

emjay 09-14-2008 03:35 PM

Well, I'm not really surprised that she'd be suspicious considering the whole Lexicon situation. The book sounds interesting though....

HarryThePotter 09-14-2008 03:57 PM

Interesting ^_^

Tommehbell 09-14-2008 04:05 PM

I am all for a author protecting their work and the rights but I think that Jo is asking a lot from this author I mean she would have thrown a hissy fit in court if someone had requested a copy of her book before it was published

milloy112 09-14-2008 04:28 PM

im sick of this stupid thing.....vander ark should be allowed to publish this one even if she says its copyright cuz if its your own expieriences then nobody can stop you!

*decides to do something like this then thinks vander ark will accuse him of copyright*

fallen-angel 09-14-2008 04:42 PM

haha I'll so get that book. And J.K has just made sure that this guy has loads of people who know about him now. Silly.

Freak_4_Harry_Potter 09-14-2008 05:45 PM

That sounds like a great book! I want to read it... just hope its not like the other ones

Kazters 09-14-2008 05:49 PM

I think it's because he was in the U.K. while writing the book, so it makes sense to take it to a British publisher.

Tbh, this is standard practice for transformative works, and given his poor history, it's hardly surprising.

He probably will be. This one does actually sound like he put some original work into it, unlike the Lexicon which was 91% Jo's.

That wouldn't shock me  had he published his Lexicon, I bet he would've done the same to Jo when her encyclopaedia eventually came out. Just the notion of the original author being sued over copyright for her own work, is mind boggling.

Paranoia around?
Did they ask for advance copies of any of the companion books that are around?

EmmaRiddle 09-14-2008 06:37 PM

^ It's not uncommon for them to do so. And when you take into account his last effort, it's not hard to understand why they'd want to see this.

ebony_wandson 09-14-2008 07:09 PM

Not suprising at all, but I think I will bypass this book. I've never been a big fan of SVA.

griffin_girl 09-14-2008 07:43 PM

sounds cool! I'll be looking out for this one!

Mari of the Ocean 09-14-2008 10:30 PM

that would be interesting

I can't Believe Steve is really going to publish another book so soon. Doesn't he want to wait atleast a year or so before resurfacing? I can't blame the boy for trying... No Offense to Mr. Vander Ark and all... But I honestly think that this boy here needs to relax and get things together.

Steve clearly has no knowledge of Copyright Law or if he does. He doesn't respect it.

Emma C.D. Watson 09-15-2008 06:32 AM

I really hope it has nothing to do with JO's work and I think that Ark dude is so weird when it comes to being a fan he says and keeps trying to publich Jo's work as his own...:hermy2:

Ginevra_P 09-15-2008 01:56 PM

I can understand why she would do that, he's not trustworthy. She has all right to do so. This new book sounds kinda cool though, I would want to read it.

bitsyandtank 09-15-2008 02:03 PM

That's interesting. Hopefully there won't be any copyright problems.

FoxFire 09-15-2008 02:55 PM

Found Hogwarts, eh? I think Steve...is a wittle bit cwazy.

leighleigh 09-15-2008 06:10 PM

at least they arnt making a scene about her checking it first

Paint.the.Limelight 09-15-2008 09:47 PM

I think she has the right to read it before it is published, especially because it's her books he's basing it off of.

Zoe 09-15-2008 11:20 PM

Okay. [:/]
