J.K.Rowling on Powerful People in British Culture list

The Telegraph has placed J.K.Rowling at #14 in their list of the top 100 Powerful People in British Culture.

Quote:

14 J.K. Rowling, 42, author. Harry Potter brought her fame and fortune, and she in turn has given a break to the British film industry, by insisting the films of her books be shot in Britain with an all-British cast. Has said: 'I never wanted [fame] and I never expected it and certainly didn't work for it, and I see it as something that I have to get through, really.'
Other names on the list include; Andrew Lloyd Webber, Simon Cowell, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Kevin Spacey, Richard Curtis and Sir David Attenborough.

Stephen Fry, the narrator for the British Harry Potter audio books, and Helena Bonham-Carter, who portrays Bellatrix Lestrange in the films, also made the list.

honestly, i would've thought JKR would be placed higher up on the list-- at least on the Top 10.

i'm also glad that Sir Ian McKellen made it on the list whenever that man says anything publicly it gets reported everywhere, i'm not exaggerating.

i'm surprised by the inclusion of Kevin Spacey. i'm aware of his much lauded work with The Old Vic, but i thought this list was for British people, and last time i checked, Spacey still holds an American passport.

Powerful People in British Culture implies they don't have to be of that nationality, imo :)

She insisted that the films be filmed in Britain with an all- British cast? I didn't know that. Of course, it could be an assumption or something. Just seems a little...elitist. :erm:

Really? o.o

And yep, JKR is very powerful.
With great power comes great responsibility.

Well if anyone has the right to say how they want things done, surely its the author...
She wants the world she created to be how she intended it to be. Nothing to do with being 'elitist' if you ask me, but thats just me opinion!

Congrats J.K!!!!!!!:
:bubbly:  :woot:

i dont think jkr is being elitist at all. I mean, look at the ethnicities of her casting. So they all have british/scottish/irish accents....you still have Dean Thomas, Cho Chang, the Patil twins, Blaise Zabini, Kingsley Shacklebolt. Hogwarts is a british school, not russian or american, so more than likely the student population would be british. You would presume that other countries or regions have their own school attracting students from their own countries. God, i would cringe to hear an american accent in an HP movie. And i have an american accent....

Yes. Knowing the way British accents get killed by Hollywood, I don't blame her. Plus it adds to the authenticity. And different countries have different unions and rules re: working hours for children, visas, education etc...

Go Jo! But I totally agree with her insistence that the movies be filmed in Britain with an all-British cast. Personally, Hollywood would have ruined the movies.

HarryThePotter 04-14-2008 06:15 PM

Wow. Joanne sounds so nice. I mean, who other than herself would say this:
'I never wanted fame and I never expected it and certainly didn't work for it, and I see it as something that I have to get through, really.

God - Joanne you are so lovely! :D

Tommehbell 04-14-2008 06:20 PM

Wow Kevin Spacey is one of my all time favorite actors:) I love him! But its funny that he would be on a British list about who is powerful in British culture. Go Spacey!!

aliciahutchinson 04-14-2008 06:50 PM

Yes!! She is a very powerful woman, and deserves to be in a higher number than 14, but at least she's recognized!! I think It's great that the cast is British, or with authentic accents lol I agree with 'Partronus Charm' that if there were any characters without an authentic British, or close to British accent, it would ruin the whole film, and I would really hate to see that!!!!! But anyways, Good job Jo!!!!!

Padie 04-14-2008 06:51 PM

Woot! She defo deserves to be there :D

hpnaiv 04-14-2008 08:29 PM

I thought that it would be higher :(

cgold 04-15-2008 12:06 AM

Wonderful! Love her and I love when she makes these lists. The lists aren't important because she knows she's awesome but it's good to be recognized. :loved:

that kinda raised my eyebrow too at the beginning, but then this is the creator of the world that they're gonna put on screen so she certainly has the prerogative to say her piece. but IIRC she was asked about this-- not her insisting on it-- and all she said was that she wished it was an all British cast, at least for the main characters (i tell you that Spielberg-Osment rumor scared the bejeebers outa her :P). another thing, Chris Columbus, the first director of the HP movies, was of the same opinion as JKR about the all British cast with a shooting location in the UK, and last time i checked, Columbus is an American ;)

its true that with this system they missed out on some truly gifted American actors who can do a very respectable English accent, but it all played out well in the end.

EmmaRiddle 04-15-2008 04:13 PM

^ Except, not everyone who's British, is English :P

Hermione Granger101 04-15-2008 08:47 PM

AWWWWWWWWWW that is soooooo awesome!!!~ But I thought that she would be number 1 or 2!!!~ Richer than the Queen!!!!!~

Night_Owl 04-15-2008 11:06 PM

Agreed.

That aside, good for Jo. I'm pretty happy she was placed there, though I would have expected her higher up - at least in the top ten. Besides, I don't know half the others in there.
