J.K. Rowling, Kenneth Branagh, Voldemort attacks at London Olympic opening ceremony

The London Olympic summer games began on Friday evening with the opening ceremonies at Olympic Stadium, and a few familiar faces showed up during the over-hour-long celebration of Great Britain through the centuries.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling made a brief appearance during the literary segment, reading an excerpt of J.M Barrie's Peter Pan to a crowd of children; film actor Sir Kenneth Branagh started off by reading Shakespeare's The Tempest before centuries of Britain unfolded around him.

And finally - so far - confirming rumours, a massive blow-up version of Lord Voldemort was thwarted by a shower of Mary Poppinses from the sky. Photos of those can be seen below; we will have video footage as soon as they are made available.

The opening ceremony aired live in the U.K. on BBC1 and pre-taped versions will be available on NBC networks later in the evening.

Well now we know what Harry should've done. All he needed was Mary Poppins to finish off Voldy!

Can't wait to see this tonight when the U.S. airs it!

Magical Soul 07-27-2012 10:01 PM

Lord Voldemort is scary.

WOW! This is the first time I've had an Olympics Opening night spoiled as it won't be shown here until later. LOL! Thanks for letting me know JK will be there as I will not leave my seat in from of the TV until I've seen that segment.

bonnieginnyfan1 07-28-2012 03:08 AM

I woke up at 5am to watch the Olympics. I really wanted to see if there was a blown up Voldemort!

Ivana R 07-28-2012 04:07 AM

I loved the London Olympic opening ceremony!
It was amazing, great idea remember us their History (our History: the Industrial Revolution was not an isolated incident). The soundtrack was perfect, Rowan Atkinson was very funny as always... And JK Rowling took us to a magical place when she read Peter Pan...
:lmao:And Voldemort defeated by Mary Popins....hahahahhah:lmao:

Unless I am mistaken about what I was seeing... I thought having saw Tom Felton there performing a soldier. Someone saw him too?

Looneybird 07-28-2012 04:10 AM

The giant Voldemort seriously made me laugh! You know you've made your mark as a villian when you pop up at the Olympics. :D Although it's kind of sad that it took Harry seven books to defeat Voldemort when all he really needed was a shower of Mary Poppins to do the work, I guess. :P London, the entire U.K. really, has outdone themselves!

FearlessLeader19 07-28-2012 04:44 AM

I nearly died of excitement when I saw Jo! And I loved the blown up Voldemort.

London has done it self proud! I stuck to my seat through it all and I loved every moment of the Ceremony.

It was a very good segment. I think the Olympics did a good job in capturing the essence of Great Britain. I loved the Voldemort life size version of it. Very imaginative. It was a good piece incorporating great children works into the feature. Dull at times but it was very well done. Great story of GB and all it has contributed. MISTI-Con 2013 was just talking about having a life size Voldemort in the mix... haahaaa

Voldermort... Runnnnn

HogwartsHokage 07-28-2012 08:00 AM

I enjoyed watching it, but that Voldemort was HUGE! Overall, it was a pretty good ceremony; my personal favorites were the doves and the cauldron lighting itself.

If I'm honest, I didn't think the beginning was that great but then Kenneth came and it got better from there, especially Jo's bit - my mind blew up with excitement!!
I don't remember Ralph Fiennes being that big though... :)
Congrats to Jo, Voldemort, Kenneth, Rowan and Danny Boyle.

Seriously.............. Voldemort, the best. I about screamed the house down.

DancingwithRainbows 07-29-2012 01:35 AM

Although i enjoyed seeing Voldemort, and all that I have to say that (probably through missing the beginning) I didn't enjoy it all too much, but I was soooo excited when I saw Jo and she began reading which led to Voldemort appearing and all that other stuff!!!!

Hermionespell 07-29-2012 11:32 PM

The opening ceremonies, from what I saw, weren't really that magnificent. Of course, it's wonderful that HP and Jo were in it.

Patronus Charm 07-30-2012 06:55 PM

voldy should have had red eyes w/ snake slits!

loony 4 ........ 07-30-2012 07:05 PM

Opening Ceremony was great. Of course, not Beiging's level in 2008 but great nevertheless. It was imaginative as it celebrated everything thats British from culture, history, NHS to literature and music. It was meant to be that way showing the world its heritage. I know a lot of people around the world are critical of it but still, you cant always get what you want. Rowan Atkinson, James Bond and Beckham were some of the best bits.

Friggin' EPIC.
