Post J.K. Rowling explains character reactions to the Veil

J.K. Rowling, according to Harry Latino, gave more information from a previous interview about Albus Potter and her reasons for avoiding Quidditch scenes if she were to ever write an eighth book; as well as why Harry, Ron, and Hermione reacted the way they did in the climax of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when they first encountered the veil in the Death Chamber.

Quidditch seems to be a major factor that is hindering Jo from writing an eighth book (roughly translated from Spanish):

Quote:
"What I keep away from Hogwarts in the next generation is having to return to Quidditch, unless it decides that my hero on this occasion could not play Quidditch. In that case, could have adventures while others play Quidditch."
Jo also discusses the trio's reactions towards the Veil introduced in Order of the Phoenix:

Quote:
"I wanted to have a debate here, so that my three main characters (when they arrive in the room where they studied death in the Ministry of Magic). Hermione, the hyper-rational and skeptical one until the end, did not hear anything behind the veil and it frightens her; Ron gets tense: Ron is not someone who would face something deeper than a beer, to be able to avoid it; Harry has accepted it, and here he is slightly unwise, because Harry has no idea how dangerous the attraction of death can be for a teenager."

I wish that there will be a real tralsation for us non-Spanish speakers.
I wasn't surpirsed that HArry wanted to know more about the veil when he was there, because his life kinda surrounded around death. Death of his parents, and because of that stupid veil Sirius ()

Hmm that's interesting. I always figured that Hermione could hear it but knew it was dangerous.

Talk about roughly translated "deeper than a beer"?

Reached and Spanked 1000! The Snitch

It's great how little things that we take for granted in the books, she has everything happen for a reason and such an explaination and back story. Has this woman no end to her talent?!?!

I would have to agree. I always thought she could hear it as well.

No end to her talent, except that fact that she hates writing about quidditch!! *sobs*

Seriously... how could she leave quidditch out of the next generation?

Meh, it's still too little information on the subject. I always thought the Veil and the way Sirius died, and the voices, would be amongst the first things she would touch upon after finishing DH.

Guess I still have to wait.

aww poor ron... I guess being deep isn't one of his strong points

but that's sad that Quidittch was one of the main reasons why she didn't write an eighth book. I guess I'll just have to settle for FanFiction.

it says that hermione was not able to hear anything and that she was frightened Because she couldn't hear the voices. she doesn't say that she was able to hear it. maybe you can only hear the voices if somebody you knew had died?

I don't really understand the Ron one. Is she saying that he fears death?

I think with Ron she's saying that he would avoid it in general because he just doesn't grasp the veil's meaning. I reckon he feels, on a raw and instinctual level, that there's something not right about the veil, and that's why he feels tense towards it, but he can't figure out why (unlike Hermione, who is more reasonable and perhaps could), so he wants to be away from it.

I didn't think she was considering writing an 8th book either. But I disagree with you; I don't think there should be another novel. Harry Potter was a great series and will forever be memorable in our hearts... but it's over. There were seven years at Hogwarts, and thus seven books. Seven is considered the "lucky" number in the magical world, which is another reason for her to stop at seven books - in my opinion, at least

*inserts shameless plug*

Although, if you wish to discuss the prospect of an 8th book further, you may do so by joining the JKR FC... the place where you can also show your appreciation for the memorable author, Jo, creator of the HP universe. Because without her, none of us would be here talking ...

*gets off soapbox*

I think you hit the nail on the head here. If you remember Luna could also hear the voices behind the veil and she too has seen death (her mother). I think this may work in the same fashion that seeing thestrals does. You can only see/hear if you have seen death.

I also love the Ron metaphor used, "Ron is not someone who would face something deeper than a beer." Hermione could vouche for that.

Reached and Spanked 1000! The Snitch

I think it's more about how open your mind is. Ron is always scared - with Divination, to begin with he is fearful such as the Grim, whereas Hermione is very much "I'll believe it when I see it". Hermione is the skeptic, needing hard proof, whilst Ron is just a little gullable when it comes to believing things.

As for Luna, she is very quirky, but she believes what she believes and doesn't fear it, just like Harry.

I don't think it's about seeing death or Ron would have been able to see the Threstrals.

Not sure if I've made sense of not, but it's the way I see it.

And yet another 'in your face' plug...

If you are in awe how wonderful Jo is, you may want to come and join us at JK Rowling FC and pay tribute to the wonder that is Jo. She's the reason we are all here, no doubt about that!!!

Interesting take on the trio's reactions. But sincerely, I don't think Ron is that shallow.
