How Amazon will cope with HBP

Forbes is today reporting on the efforts Amazon is going to, to compete with bookstore chains who'll also be selling 'Half-Blood Prince'. The internet shop is at a significant disadvantage because unlike shops, they can't get the book to fans at midnight.

Quote:

Amazon's five American warehouses processed as many as 250 Potter orders per minute, and, in each, there was a team dedicated to doing nothing but processing Harry Potter orders. These teams worked in secure areas blocked off with an 8-foot high mesh barrier, which could be accessed only by warehouse workers with a special badge. It also posted security guards at the entrance--keeping the books under tight surveillance around the clock.
Quote:

Steve Holmes, a UPS spokesman, said the company has come up with a detailed "industrial strength" plan just for the Harry Potter delivery. "From the moment we pick up the packages, they'll keep moving," said Holmes.
Quote:

Says Amazon spokeswoman Kristin Mariani, "It's basically Christmas in June."
Quote:

"In this case," said Holmes, "a day early is no better than a day late."
The release of 'Half-Blood Prince', for Amazon, has been described as "the biggest delivery event in e-commerce history."

I'm sure they'll manage it, they did last time.

Cristygen 04-12-2005 07:03 PM

That must be a crazy place to be around on the days prior to July 16th. Anyway, i had preorder it on Amazon, but decided to preorder it at Borders and buy it at midnight. I guess they were worried for people like me, who prefer to buy it at midnight. :)

Lissydove 04-12-2005 07:03 PM

Yeah, they did (manage it last time). I received OOTP on the day it came out from Amazon in a cute box with a warning to the post office not to deliver this package before the right day. I'm a bit transportationally (if that's a word :) )challanged sometimes so pre-ordering is a way I know I will get it. I'm okay with the thought I wont get it at midnight.

SapphireMisty 04-12-2005 07:28 PM

Security guards around where the books are kept. Yes, that is what I called good protection, we don't want to happen to people's books whose orders are stolen, like it did last time (didn't it?). I know I would hate it. I just hope all the guards are trustworthy (and no one in disguise). I am still waiting for my time to go and preorder it. I just I would be able to preorder my copy soon.

firebolt_pilot 04-12-2005 08:03 PM

Good lord they are not joking around with the protection here. I hope the post office can get everything out that day, they might need trucks just to deliver books! WWWWOOOOOOO go HP!

OtterySt.Catchpole 04-12-2005 08:04 PM

Ottery is a philosopher when he's not a shipper...but not a UPS shipper...*winks*

For the love of pete...this is ridiculous...I'm going to be at the bookstore at Midnight, beating off little kids to get my copy...for the grown ups I got pepper spray *mwahahahahaha*

But seriously...they could always get it the next day at the store, or something...do you really need it that fast? What if UPS can't find your house? What if you live in say Middle of Nowhere, Texas and UPS doesn't deliver because they can't ask the cows for directions???

Just wondering. What if peanut butter and jelly were peanut butter and jello?

HermyG_1300 04-12-2005 08:49 PM

i think i would die if i worked around HBP copies all day without reading it:faint:

EmmaRiddle 04-12-2005 09:15 PM

^ The books aren't printed yet. They're working with the orders for the books.

Lissydove 04-12-2005 09:17 PM

^ Gotcha!

2^Amen,HermyG_1300! Me too!

3^ OtterySt.Catchpole you make me laugh! :lmao: Glad I wont be on line with you! Pepper spray!! :D

Unless you can lend me some? :shifty:

Someone said the other day, on SS, "What's the point in having it at Midnight?! No-one's going to read it then anyways!"

I digress *smirks* mine'll be finished by 6AM, Brownie promise!

So tough though! We have to wait so long for #7! I feel like I should savor it! (mine'll be done in hours too probably - little self restraint here).

slythringurl04 04-12-2005 09:35 PM

they'll manage... i hope..

prettyinpink 04-12-2005 10:24 PM

i know....right!!...lets all hope!!!

Laieesha 04-12-2005 10:56 PM

One of the recent articles about getting the books on the 16th got me worried, because it says it didn't apply to orders with the Free Super Saver shipping option (which I had). Today, I got an email from Amazon asking if I would want to change my shipping option to standard so I'll get it on the 16th. Man, was I relieved. I didn't know I can change that! So I did, and so now I'm just waiting for July... I think I will ask for the 16th and 17th off from work so I can read it as soon as I receive it.

I changed mine too. I still have to say that I used the free super saver on OOTP and got it on the day it came out, but this pre-order seems so much bigger that I changed mine too. Good point - I wonder if I'm working that day...Runs off to get calender....

potterxfan04 04-12-2005 11:52 PM

250 per minute, wow i'm impressed!

mine is pre-ordered at borders but i don't think i can get it at 12:01 because the borders i got it at is in a mall which will definitely not be open at that time..

Weasley9 04-13-2005 12:04 AM

I think they will manage. It must be really interesting to be around a UPS place on July 16th. When is the 7th book forecast to come out?

PHLphlyest 04-13-2005 12:13 AM

You'd think these books were the president or something. I feel sorry for my friend tho...she works at UPS and I'm sure she won't be thrilled at the extra work! lol *pre-ordered mine and i better get it on July 16th*

Someone has to man the cannons for the love of D/G...

Ottery says: I was going to enjoy it but then who'd be firing off cannons on the love forums??? I'm going to read it in one sitting and after I'm out of the hospital for sleep deprivation, I'm going to bomb those H/Hr shippers once and for all...:pirate2:

Nice digression Emma...*winks* but you're a fast reader...and can I have a brownie? I won't be done till next day probably...Sunday morning...
Ottery before: :) Ottery after: :dizzy:

I'm sure they (UPS, Fedex, etc, etc.) who deliever those packagaes in their area they're assigned to will know their areas at the back of their hand. If not, they still have the GPS system maps to help them out should they get lost to find their destinations.

You mean that you're gonna finish yours on Saturday morning? Hmm...Since the HBP is somewhat shorter than OotP, then I know I will finish the book in less than 22 hours nearly nonstop, and this time, perhaps a bit faster than I read the last, so I estimate...about 15-16 hours or less nearly nonstop for me this time. And this time, I'll sleep in the afternoon on the day prior to the release, and hopefully, my mom won't stop me from reading it this time on midnight, if I don't go on the trip to Taiwan. Also, my 'night' reading will be accompanied by my own homemade candles.

James_Padfoot 04-13-2005 09:00 AM

Amazingly enough, I still haven't ordered mine yet. I was going to do it with Amazon, but then upon contemplation, realised that trying to get it here in Malaysia by July the 16th is impossible, as the US is 12 hours behind, and if I am not sorely mistaken, Amazon is US/UK based. So with that thought, Amazon has been scratched off.

I am going for MPH or Kinokuniya [A Jap bookstore, that does awesome deco, *hopes they will deco again this year*] ... I plan to read it, non-stop once I get it. I'm a speed reader, so I should be done quite soon enough. Then I will re-read it, again and again, because thats what I love doing best. Then after having done that, I will rush back online and start with the theory mill...

As will I. I didn't allow myself to rest last time till I finished the OotP.

:rotfl: Right behind you Ottery, I wouldn't get it online if someone threatened me! Who cares about sleep deprivation, I'll finish mine in the hospital if I have to!

Oh my o_O

Poor employees!! I understand the need for security.. and surely, someone might steal it... but surrounded by mesh?? o_O
