| | | HBP in USA: 6.9 Million Copies in First 24 Hours
The American edition of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, published by Scholastic, sold 6.9 million copies in the first 24 hours - or an average of more than 250,000 copies per hour.
Fifth book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix sold 5 million copies in the same 24 hour period in 2003, although some stores reportedly ran out of copies.
Thanks to TLC for the tip!

| I got my copy at about quater past 12 from Tesco 'cos I watched that thing on ITV first.I went and I was like "they havent sold out have they?" Then someone came with a truck load of the HBP,Yeah! The lad on the checkout said he had sold more books than shopping. There was alot off older people buying the book like 15-40 odd maybe even older and most of them had the childrens edition. -Helen

It's franky amazing that JK is able to keep this loyal fanbase of her. To a long series like that, it'd be ok if she loses fans along the way - not the case.

Amazing. Considering that you get more die-hard fans each year. I bet the record may even rise to 10 million by the time book 7 comes around.

| The Sweetest Thing Lissy De Vil It boggles the mind. Incredible! Does that number include the sales through amazon and other online stores? I bought one in person and one through the mail. There seems to be enough out there this time though. I was just at Wal Mart and saw a huge stack.

thats just so awesome. i got mine later that day (what a bad harry potter fan i am!) and like almost the whole stack was gone. but i am proud to say that in that 6.9 million books, mine was one of them! hehe, my best friend and her family bought three of them. she got hers first, so she read the first chapter to me on the phone
