Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I to only be shown in 2D format, not 3D

In a new press release, Warner Bros announced that due to time constraints, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I will ONLY be featured in 2D in conventional theatres and IMAX, not 3D. However, Part II, as originally scheduled, will be featured in both 2D and 3D formats.

Quote:

Warner Bros Pictures has made the decision to release “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” in 2D, in both conventional and IMAX theaters, as we will not have a completed 3D version of the film within our release date window. Despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality.

We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey, and to that end, we are releasing our film day-and-date on November 19, 2010 as planned. We, in alignment with our filmmakers, believe this is the best course to take in order to ensure that our audiences enjoy the consummate “Harry Potter” experience.

Producer David Heyman said, “For 10 years, we have worked alongside Alan Horn and the studio, whose priority has always been to preserve the integrity of Jo Rowling’s books as we have adapted them to the screen, and this decision reflects that commitment.”

Director David Yates continued, “This decision, which we completely support, underscores the fact that Warner Bros. has always put quality first.”

As scheduled, on July 15, 2011, we will deliver to conventional and IMAX theaters our final installment of the film franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” in both 2D and 3D formats.

That's great that they prefer a quality film over trying to make heaps of money out of the 3D trend that's going on now. You don't hear that too often nowadays. :) Of course, they're going to make heaps of money anyway, regardless of whether the movie's in 3D, so they've got nothing to worry about in that area.

And I was going to see the movie in 2D anyway, so this perfectly fine with me. ^_^

Good I dont like 3D it hurts my eyes....

fantastic news. I don't understand this whole 3D obession. Apart from one visit to my local imax. i plan to watch the other 29 viewing in 2D. 3D just gets in the way of a perfectly great cinema experience

Vargaroth 10-08-2010 06:41 PM

Ill see it regardless but im kind of surprised.

Mr.Snitch > 10-08-2010 06:48 PM

I hate WB enough!!!

Patronus Charm 10-08-2010 06:48 PM

I dislike 3-D!

Prof. McGonagall 10-08-2010 06:53 PM

There is no need for this movie to be in 3D...however I am SO glad it'll still be shown in IMAX!

im not a huge fan of 3d either. i really dont notice much of a difference...

i cant even believe the thought had crossed their minds to possibley have to push back the release date again to make it completely 3D!!

I am SO GLAD they didnt!!

Looneybird 10-08-2010 07:05 PM

Yes! Thank God WB realized the giant mistake they'd make if it was in 3D. Avatar pulled it off because it was a different movie in itself. The same glove doesn't always fit everyone.

I'm extremely pleased that a film company is actually putting the quality of the film first over how much product it can rank in with a 3D bonus, especially now with the 3D craze. There's no need to compromise a good film with unnecessary effects. At least WB is doing something right after the HBP screw up...there's hope for them yet.

I don't like 3D much.

I'm not that disappointed. Sure it would have been nice to see certain shots like Nagini or the motorcycle chase scene in 3D but it would be better to see it in good quality 2D than crappy 3D. There a lot of movies out there where the 3D quality was really bad and it hurt the movie.

I completely agree. While, yes, we were all anticipating 3-D, I'd rather them not do it as opposed to a quick, sloppy, bang-up job.

PLUS: how cool would it be to RE release Part I in 3-D a month before Part II? I'm sure by June, they could get them both ready. =) (marketing decision? Perhaps) =P

alyssa_hilary 10-08-2010 07:54 PM

Uuuuhm. What's the point in releasing part 2 in 3D now? Or are they going to complete the 3D for part 1 and put it on the dvd/blu-ray?

I agree with you completely Amy! Your tweets said it best today. I'd rather see it done well than quick and sloppy. Plus, the idea of it being re-released before Part 2 in 3D could be a very wise marking move for the company as well. I'm sure that with LeakyCon being held that same opening weekend, there could be a lot of things that could happen for the fans. I know I would love to be able to see it in 3D with my friends during that weekend.

OMG! Buuuuuuuuuuu! I wanted to put on my glasses and enjoy HP7 1

JerethX 10-08-2010 08:24 PM

I was planning on 2-D anyway, it's too far for me to go and camp out at a 3D place.

KatielovesHP 10-08-2010 08:32 PM

Part 1 won't have enough action to need 3D anyway. If 2 isn't 3D I will not be happy!!!

farahq 10-08-2010 08:36 PM

I liked all of the series with 2D so...........

averageteenx 10-08-2010 08:39 PM

2D has worked so far, what's the point of messing around for the last film with another dimension?

Nia 10-08-2010 08:54 PM

To be honest, i don't mind at all. Of course it would've been interesting to see this film in 3D too, but good quality must come first. We don't want anything to ruin this film, so i'm completely fine with this decision. And i'm so glad it's not just all about money, i believe they really care about this and want to give us a great film. :)

Camille 10-08-2010 09:07 PM

GOOD! 3D is such a gimmick and would, I think, really take away from the film. They should do the same for part 2!
