Half-Blood Prince on Academy Awards' Achievement in Visual Effects short-list
 

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is on the 82nd annual Academy Awards' short list for Achievement in Visual Effects, going against such titles as Sherlock Holmes, Watchmen, Where the Wild Things Are, and many more.

The list will be narrowed down to seven on Thursday, January 21 after the Visual Effects Branch previews 15-minute segments for each film featured on the long list. After the seven have been chosen, the list will be further truncated to the final three actually picked for the best VFX Oscar category on Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

These are the Academy Awards; the public can't vote for them. There's a committee of people who choose the nominees and subsequent winner.

To be honest, I'm a bit surprised, not because I didn't think the special effects weren;t good, but because HBP didn't strike me as a huge Special FX film (I mean, all the other films had much more - Unicorns, trolls, and Voldemort in the 1st in, flying cars and giant spiders in the second, Buckbeak in the 3rd - etc. This one had the least amount of extra special effects.

That having been said, the mastery of any special FX team lies in its seamlessness and making fake environments seem natural, so maybe it was the fact that the FX in HBP were so subtle that made it so successful.

Either way, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Harry Potter wins! The series should at least received ONE oscar somewhere!

OMG!!!!at last i have always thought why hadnt HP ever even made it to the nominations for academy awards...i am glad it made it this time and i hope that it wins because the graphics and visula effects were really cool and i guess worth the win...yay! go HBP go!
