'GOF' Passes 'POA' at the Box Office

'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' has now surpassed 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' in U.S. box office receipts. After only 5 weeks in the theaters, GOF has grossed $252.5 million, whereas POA took in $249.5 million after it's 17 weeks in theaters. In fact, GOF is on it's way to passing the current HP movie leader Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets which grossed $261.9 million during it's run time.

Worldwide, GOF has made $707.9 million and should also overtake POA, which made $789.7 million in worldwide receipts.

That's wicked!! Go Goblet!! Wow! It just keeps getting better doesn't it!! I love it!! I'm gonna see it again in the new year! Yay!

Sir Mattio 12-19-2005 04:36 PM

Interesting. I think since Cos was bad it lessened the attendance for PoA, but then PoA was awesome it picked up again.

alyssa_hilary 12-19-2005 04:37 PM

I didn't think CoS was bad. I loved it! I thought that although PoA is a great movie, it's the worst out of the three.

kid dreamer 12-19-2005 04:41 PM

sweet! i thought it was a better film

chyler faye 12-19-2005 04:50 PM

it's not much of a surprise. It was rather obvious. i knew all along that this would happen...now i keep my fingers crossed hoping that GOF will surpass PS/SS, not to mention Titanic :sorcerer: :sorcerer: :sorcerer:

Mrs Felton 12-19-2005 05:02 PM

Cool. Goblet was much better than PoA so it was pretty obvious it was gonna overtake it but now we just gotta wait until it overtakes CoS n PS

Yeah that's it. In a series, the predecessor, for a lot of people, determines whether they see the sequel. Ergo the takings are sometimes a better reflection of what people thought of the previous film. After PS, the takings declined with CoS, the same with PoA, and now they're picking up. Basically what it comes down to is if people liked PoA they're more inclined to return to cinemas for GoF.

Takings are less reflective of the quality of the current film simply because you don't see a film because you know it's good, cause you don't know what it's going to be like until you see it. Money doesn't make a film good, it just shows how many people went to see it. Loads of people could see it but it doesn't mean they come out liking it. If a film puts less bums in seats than previous films it's more likely down to people not liking what came before and deciding that they wouldn't see the next one.

We'll get a better idea of GoF's 'success' when OotP is released, if people choose to return to the cinema again because they liked its predecessor. The first film did so well simply because it was the first, people had nothing to compare it to or judge it against but then takings fell with CoS because of PS and so on and so forth.

And I agree CoS is the 'worst' imo.

yes i think so too....

but abt GoF.....yay...........I knew it'd cross the PoA figures

Lady_Jezz 12-19-2005 06:56 PM

Awesome, but let's keep in mind that PoA was released at the wrong moment (summer holidays), it's always more quite then when a film is released around xmas...

siriusly_loving_gary 12-19-2005 07:16 PM

that's really awesome! i think i'll help the film with making money and go and see it again ... yes ...

It should be about the art not the money *sighs* I mean...HELLO, Rupert is a masterpiece...is it any wonder that GoF is making so much money...LOL

Then there's Krum, now there's a piece of work...and Cedric...OMG!

LOL

This is good...they should be greenlighting the 6th and 7th movies after this no? Keep the trio WB.

OtterySt.Catchpole 12-19-2005 07:51 PM

*crying* How canyou say that...Rupert was in it. *crying*
