I watched the award and was shocked at how unenthusiastic the presenters and book crittics were about HP. It seemed to me as if none of them thought it deserved to be up there. Also as much as i love LOTR i think it won on the merrit of the movie which is wrong as it was supposed to be about the books not their screen counterparts... how many people do you know who have picked up LOTR and had to put it straigh back down again becouse it's too heard to read?!
Out of all the books (I've read all but his dark materials) I think Pride and Predudice deserved to win the most, Jane Austin was a geniouse to have written a book that is still as relavent and loved today as it was when it was first published.

Tessa- I agree. They seemed very biased, just because Harry Potter became successful in less time than those other books did. :arg:

it should be number 1! Perhaps the judges felt that way because of all the hype surrounding HP.

Yay! I'm so happy that Harry is number 5! It's awesome it's in the same league as Pride and Prejudice on that list. I'm a little suprised though that Lord of The Rings was first, I thought it would be two and Pride and Prejudice would be one. But that's just what I thought, i'm extremely happy that Lord of The Rings came out first! I love them! :sorcerer:

I read LoTR for the first time when i was ten, and i was fascinated, i read them through, finished one went straight to the other. As an adult i do feel the need to put the books down and take a breather. Compared to HP LoTR reads like a history text book.
I would have voted for GoF, i just love the HP books more.

I am a great LOTR fan, and have been for over five years. I have never seen the movies, and do not intend to. If I had voted, I would have voted for them because of their literary merit, which is exceedingly great. JRR Tolkein was a magnificent writer. I have never felt that he read like a textbook, though I can see the amazing effort he put into his books. Such as that every faze of the moon was correct as to the given year, and so were the corresponding constelations, et c. Not to mention the creation of several languages. I think HP came in fifth, not because it isn't loved, but because people have loved other books for alot longer. I can't say I like one book over the other. There are books I love, and I've never could find a favorite. But the ones that have held my attention for years and years would definatly take precedense over something that's only been around for a few. besides, more people know the other books, as suprizing as that may seem.

Out of all the books (I've read all but his dark materials) I think Pride and Predudice deserved to win the most, Jane Austin was a geniouse to have written a book that is still as relavent and loved today as it was when it was first published. Actually, you'll find that there are many fans of the books. It has also been regarded as an important and well known piece of literature over the years, long before the movie was released. Of course, the movie is also loved by many people, and theres alot of hype about it, but the LotR books have been around a long time, and it has lots of older fans. Some younger fans may have found it hard to read , when I first tried to read it, I got to like..page 10 and put it down, but, Its not written for children.
Although it could be said that the show was unfair, in that GoF was "competing" against some books (LotR for example) which were not written for children, where as GoF is. Some people may have read LotR, but never read GoF, because it was a childrens book that didn’t appeal to them. I mean HP is probably I bit more engaging for younger kids to read and it's more contemporary, whereas lord of the rings is a "traditional" masterpiece enjoyed by many generations and a bit more challenging to get through.
I dont want to start up this whole argument about LotR vs HP, really, it happens so often, but I just thought I'd give you my opinion.
Wow, I wrote alot..thats really odd, well, now you know that I'm really passionate about this topic.

i think the big read was fantatsic! but i think LoTR is kinda a bit out od context now...we should have chosen a book that applies to today's soceity///basically we need to look forward not back! i think we should appreciate older books but look for values in today literature which apply...write back
