First Edition PoA book to make £20,000 at auction - The BBC are following an item on auction

The BBC have been keeping track on an item, a PoA First Edition book which has two days left on Ebay. The current bid is at £2,050 but they expect it to reach £20,000.

The BBC are following an auction over at Ebay. The item which is expected to get £20,000 at auction has already clocked up £2,050. The auction is still open for another 2 days and 10 hours.

I know someone who had a box set of the 1-3 first edition books. Her dad threw them away, because he didn't know their worth...

It really stinks...

Well it's up to 2550 pounds...(don't know if my keyboard has pound mark?)That's already alot of money. I would love to have the British version of her books... I do have first editions of the American version... but they printed an awful lot of those! :flowersmile:

Which is what makes the British First Editions so rare. The US first editions were printed in tens of thousands, but the British were only printed in thousands because we're a smaller country and because she was not a big author at the time that PS/CoS/PoA went to publishing in the UK through Bloomsbury.

I have a first edition British OotP Hardback. Yay for me!

I've got the American first edition GOF and Ootp, but I drew all in GOF and Ootp has pages bent and the binding is messing up. Plus their both missing the covers. It makes me sad to see how I messed mine all up and everyone else as theirs in airtight boxes.

wow that's a lot of money. Yah I had hardcover 1st editions for everyone, but bu someway or anther I broke them. But they were American so I figured they wouldn't bring in very much. But also doesn't the fact that their were mistakes make it worth more than your garden variety British 1st edition? :ermsmile:

If they have mistakes it makes them far more valuable.

My OotP has at least one spelling error.

Well, PS (being the oldest) is in the worst condition. The rest aren't that bad, and OotP's pretty good. But I wouldn't part from them

wow you're lucky!!

hmm that book is very valuable but if i had a first edition i wouldnt sell it...

wonder if the bids will come up to their expectations or higher..?

I would love to get my hands on that but 2 factors hold me back. One is that i cant afford it and two is that if it went into my hands i would probably ruin it. Oh well! {sighs} at least i have my British first edition of OotP but by the looks of things everyone has that. Maybe it will be worth alot in 15 or 20 years. But by that time i would have ruined them so much that they would be disindigrated!

I have the American first editions in every book but the first, but they're so beat up from the number of times I've re-read them that they wouldn't really be worth anything.

How much does 20,000 pounds translate to in American dollars?

They must not be much of a Harry Potter fanatic...selling them like that. If I had a first edition, i wouldnt have it out of my sight.

But, how can you tell if its a first edition? I mean, i never bought any of my HP books,( except for OotP ) because my brother bought them when they came out and gave them to me.

Look at the front copyright page and at the bottom (or near it) there should be a row of numbers. A first edition would have numbers that appear something like this: 7 6 5 4 3 2 - with the number 1 missing. That's how it is for American books, at least.

Or , you can look on the front page where it says American first edition. All of my books are first editions, but they're American so its not that big of a deal.

The British ones just read 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 or say "First Edition" - like mine does

£20,000 is around $35,000.

Woah! You people are lucky *runs and gets my books* hmmm interesting, it seems I have a first edition OoTP and didnt even know it. Thats pretty cool, but ehhh, its just an american edition, oh wellz. Wished I had enough moneies to buy that PoA 1st ed.
