| | | First Edition PoA book to make £20,000 at auction - The BBC are following an item on auction Summary:
The BBC have been keeping track on an item, a PoA First Edition book which has two days left on Ebay. The current bid is at £2,050 but they expect it to reach £20,000. Article: First Edition PoA book to make £20,000 at auction The BBC are following an auction over at Ebay. The item which is expected to get £20,000 at auction has already clocked up £2,050. The auction is still open for another 2 days and 10 hours. Quote: The sellers on eBay describe the book as a "genuine first print, first issue hardback" and detail distinctive errors on the title page and first page. Quote: Publishers Bloomsbury told BBC News Online it was impossible to verify the copy's authenticity without seeing it.* Quote: The sellers say they have kept the book unread and sealed in an airtight box since buying it in 2000 for £600.*
They have decided to auction it for money to invest in their business after watching its value soar over the past four years.* Quote: They say the book can be proved to be a first state copy because the author's name on the reverse of the title page is printed as Joanne Rowling.* (Instead of J.K.Rowling as it was later printed) Quote: Also, on the first page of the story there is a dropped line of text between the word 'burnt' and 'so much'. Pictures of these distinct features can be found over at the item's auction page at Ebay. Quote: In January this year, an uncorrected proof copy of the first Harry Potter book - with the author's name spelled wrongly - sold for £1,250 at auction.*
A signed first edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was sold by the author's father for £27,500 at auction in 2003.* The CBBC have left this comment: Quote: One Potter expert told Newsround he would be surprised if the book reached £20,000.
He thought the book was probably worth closer to £2,000. Source: Ebay via The BBC & CBBC via Mugglenet. |

I know someone who had a box set of the 1-3 first edition books. Her dad threw them away, because he didn't know their worth...
It really stinks...

The US first editions were printed in tens of thousands, but the British were only printed in thousands because we're a smaller country and because she was not a big author at the time that PS/CoS/PoA went to publishing in the UK through Bloomsbury.
I have a first edition British OotP Hardback. Yay for me! |

I've got the American first edition GOF and Ootp, but I drew all in GOF and Ootp has pages bent and the binding is messing up. Plus their both missing the covers. It makes me sad to see how I messed mine all up and everyone else as theirs in airtight boxes.

wow that's a lot of money. Yah I had hardcover 1st editions for everyone, but bu someway or anther I broke them. But they were American so I figured they wouldn't bring in very much. But also doesn't the fact that their were mistakes make it worth more than your garden variety British 1st edition?

My OotP has at least one spelling error. Quote: Well I have first editions of all five books

Well, PS (being the oldest) is in the worst condition. The rest aren't that bad, and OotP's pretty good. But I wouldn't part from them

| I would love to get my hands on that but 2 factors hold me back. One is that i cant afford it and two is that if it went into my hands i would probably ruin it. Oh well! {sighs} at least i have my British first edition of OotP but by the looks of things everyone has that. Maybe it will be worth alot in 15 or 20 years. But by that time i would have ruined them so much that they would be disindigrated! |

I have the American first editions in every book but the first, but they're so beat up from the number of times I've re-read them that they wouldn't really be worth anything.
How much does 20,000 pounds translate to in American dollars?

They must not be much of a Harry Potter fanatic...selling them like that. If I had a first edition, i wouldnt have it out of my sight.
But, how can you tell if its a first edition? I mean, i never bought any of my HP books,( except for OotP ) because my brother bought them when they came out and gave them to me.

| Quote: But, how can you tell if its a first edition? Look at the front copyright page and at the bottom (or near it) there should be a row of numbers. A first edition would have numbers that appear something like this: 7 6 5 4 3 2 - with the number 1 missing. That's how it is for American books, at least.

Or , you can look on the front page where it says American first edition. All of my books are first editions, but they're American so its not that big of a deal.

£20,000 is around $35,000.
