Empire reviews 'Goblet of Fire' DVD

Empire has reviewed the 'Goblet of Fire' DVD to coincide with the release of the film in the UK. The DVD is awarded 3 stars out 5. The entire piece can be read here.

Quote:

This is certainly not a movie for young children, however engaging its characters and comic touches. Teen angst and relationship problems are pretty boring if you’re six. But it’s not the burgeoning sexuality that’s landed the picture its 12A certificate, rather its genuinely darker vein of fantasy horror.
Quote:

While he [Steve Kloves] was at it, it’s a pity he didn’t also delete tabloid hackette Rita Skeeter — however much one likes Miranda Richardson — since she obviously functions as author J. K. Rowling’s dig at celebrity-stalking gossips, adding nothing more than running-time the story doesn’t need.
Quote:

It looks as if several scenes were filmed at greater length, surviving in quick snippets that are frequently unnecessary.
Quote:

It’s refreshing that Potter 4 aspires to be a paranoid thriller rather than yet another detective mystery. House points, too, for the movie's terrific effects and considerable charm, but, once again, you can’t help wishing the filmmakers had been bolder with the adaptation.

Only 3 out of 5? Gee! Who are these people? *crosses arms*
Oh well, I guess they have the right to have their own opinion *sighes*
I can't wait to get the DVD! Only 8 more days to wait! ^_^

MrsRadcliffe 03-21-2006 12:34 AM

3?, 3?!?!, o come on!, it deserves at least a 4 and a half!, well thats there review, in mine its a 5 i got it today :D ( i lives in the UK you see, it was relised today well yesterday know  ), they dont know what there on about and they havent got the heads screwed on properly ( )

Aonani 03-21-2006 12:43 AM

i liked the movie... but i really wish some of the things hadn't been cut out and instead have unnecessary scences like the one of harry and the dragon and how it escapes... i mean they could have used that extra like what? 10 minutes to film something like the scences with the quidditch world cup! or sirius..

redrooster 03-21-2006 12:52 AM

I already had the DVD im in the US and i think it was cool....wish they had a commentary though.........oh well

Melissapetey31 03-21-2006 01:21 AM

Well I have to agree on some of these tips. If your going to delete some of the Reeta Skeeter stuff you need to delete it all. The was really no point in her being in the film. And the quidditch world cup was the part I was looking most forward too and it really let me down. Cut Reeta and Add more quidditch world cup. That would have been my tip! Either way its still a 6 out of 5 in my book!

Tao 03-21-2006 01:41 AM

Is Empire reviewing the movie or the DVD? Because reviews for the movie are kinda old now and giving the DVD 3 out of 5 stars because of your take on the plot seems a bit weird... you're suppose to look at what the DVD offers, not what the movie is about. lol

Though I do agree with their Rita Skeeter thing. While I loved her in the book (well, loved to hate her) and she obviously serves a great purpose, since she's been cut from the 5th film, why did they keep her in the 4th? It does seem like a waste of perfectly good time on the film for a minor character.

Marisa Shadows 03-21-2006 01:43 AM

Yeah I kind of agree with the reviews. They should have went into more detail also I mean they skipped or cut a lot of good parts. It was a good film and all, but it could have been a lot better I believe.

mione_girlgwp 03-21-2006 01:57 AM

humph. I completly diagree. I was so happy with this movie. I just hope the 5th one can live up to it...and hopefully be even better? *crosses fingers*

hermia123 03-21-2006 01:58 AM

definately(sp?) a 5! I've had it a while as i live in the US and i have watched it SOOOOO many times! Also, the special features- specially MEET THE CHAMPIONS!

So anyways, 5!!!

I agree with Rita, especially since she isn't being used in OotP. But I would've gone a step further and taken out all the Quidditch entirely. And maybe had Krum bumping into the trio in the campsite instead.

Perhaps the reviewer is a disgruntled book fan.

Pure-Blood100 03-21-2006 02:07 AM

3?! c'mon!

Dan is sammi's man! 03-21-2006 02:32 AM

IT is worth so much more than 3 stars!
it one on the hottest movies i've ever seen!

jinnygirl34 03-21-2006 03:33 AM

3 out of 5? What do they matter anyway? Its more or less what the fans think about the DVD. I for one enjoyed watching it so much, that I've lost count....I guess you need to be a die hard HP fan to understand the quality of the film.

Must be! LOL DVD reviews are about the DVD, not the movie! *contemplates telling said writer this*

Although I disagree about the Krum thing... it was necessary to make Ron's jealousy even better going from absolutely adoring Krum to hating him. I think if they want to be disgruntled, they should've gone after the over-done dragon chase scene! That could've been more impressive had they shown us all the champions fighting a dragon instead of just sensationalizing Harry's dragon task.

Simple Muggle 03-21-2006 06:04 AM

*shrugs* oh well.

faith123 03-21-2006 06:11 AM

Lady_Jezz 03-21-2006 06:42 AM

I still have to wait till April 4th....

anusha.harrypotter 03-21-2006 08:56 AM

Only 3/5 ??..

FearlessLeader19 03-21-2006 10:54 AM

only 3. 4 would have been better

mhei01 03-21-2006 12:05 PM

let's respect the decision. though I really wish they would appreciate it more. 4.9 will do!

Pixina Sparkle 03-21-2006 01:05 PM

haha have the same thing in mind :shifty: haha anyways i just have to let this out "why the heck they made king kong a three hour movie and harry potter a 2hr movie???! it would be so worthed if they made Harrypotter longer than that! atleast they could have added in the qudditch game!!" *fuh!* haha so want to say that since king kong came out (and i regret to say: my money would have been better off spent on harry potter GoF movie -which i watched 5 times! LoL) :worried:

valscott 03-21-2006 01:45 PM

to the people who said that this movie wasnt kid app. im a mother of two and both my children loved it. we went to the theater and have it on dvd. the watch that too.

c00kie 03-21-2006 02:33 PM

4 1/2 would have done the trick. still, it was a good review. (some parts of it)

Jessica 03-21-2006 04:01 PM

Nice Review. I wouldn't say it wasn't precise. Anyways, I have to dash.

Love,
~~Jay~~

kkkillerkkkaren 03-21-2006 04:04 PM

the GoF is way too scary for little kids. some of the graphics are so good that they're really scary!

Mrs Felton 03-21-2006 04:55 PM

3 out of 5?? Are they crazy??

brina63 03-21-2006 05:13 PM

I think 3 is too low! I loved the movie but I agree it was too scary for really young kids.

Leeness 03-21-2006 05:43 PM

I would complain the review to be unfair since I am a major Harry Potter fan :P but they do make some valid points.

jmh 03-21-2006 05:53 PM

The critics hardly ever give good ratings to something the fans enjoy, they tend to want to show how superior they are to the rest of us so they hardly ever give good ratings to something the fans like. The ones they usually rate the best are the ones that do poorly at the box office, not the case for Goblet of Fire!

Jojogali 03-21-2006 05:56 PM

3?? That's not true! At least 4! (in my personal opinion it deserves 5+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1, its just awsom all that stuff) 3.. :( what a disgrace!

*princess potter* 03-21-2006 07:07 PM

only a 3!! they must have been watching the wrong film i thought it was brilliant and i
would definately give it a 5 (sorry im not a very good speller)

tatewin 03-21-2006 07:44 PM

I must admit that, at first, the movie was dissapointing to some degree when compared to the book. But since that first time, I have been able to lay aside that fact and look at the movie for what it really is, and now I really love it! Could it have been better, probably, but at what cost? I could have stood for a two-parter, but I don't know how well that really would have gone over in the end. The bottom line is that, if you don't let the book color your views, the movie really is excellent!

Kazters 03-21-2006 07:49 PM

I loved GOF spotted the elfs (6 min 11 UK version)

way better than i thought and it is ok on DVD... miss adult cast being interviewd also i missed that whole audio comentary i was looking forward to it

Tipsey 03-21-2006 08:19 PM

That sucks they didnt have any world cup fottage

starlightangel 03-21-2006 09:14 PM

I sort of agree, but i would have given it at least four!

MissyRee 03-21-2006 10:27 PM

I LOVE THE GOBLET OF FIRE!! best film yet!! cant wait til Ootp is out!!

Draco_Lover123 03-21-2006 10:28 PM

if you ask me it deserves all 5 stars

slythringurl04 03-21-2006 10:35 PM

that's understandable...

prettyinpink 03-21-2006 11:17 PM

hmmm... i though it was better than that!

rupertsgirl67 03-22-2006 12:31 AM

i cant believe they only gave it a three!! i would've given it a 4 or 5!! but i do agree just cut rita if they werent going to have her in the OotP. i mean, she was pointless if shes being cut! well i believe the movie was awesome, wonderful, i bought it!! yay, well it was good def not a three!

kahel16 03-22-2006 12:37 AM

3 over 5???? the dvd is amazing!!!! i have it already!!!! it's soo cool... the games are so fun but they're so hard to play (i'm sorry, i'm not the games-type of person)

Fortune_Cookie 03-22-2006 01:04 AM

Hmm...a bit harsh, I think, but some of the things the review pointed out were quite reasonable. But 3 out of 5? I think GoF deserves more than that!

MechanicGurl04 03-22-2006 02:22 AM

Goblet of fire should of got a five in my oppion I love it especially the dragons

kam_oo7 03-22-2006 03:02 AM

I think the DVD at least should have gotten a 4 it's a great DVD but they should have had Dobby come back but there is a scene at the Quiddich World Cup where there are 2 house elves so slow down that DVD player when they all arrive at the quiddch camp site and you might be able to see it!

aliastriona 03-22-2006 03:07 AM

I think 3 is kinda fair for rating the DVD. I loved the movie, even though it felt all weird and chopped up at times, but the DVD itself feels like there wasn't much thought put into it.

No commentary, a couple games, and the BTS stuff is mostly things that were aired on TV before the movie release. For such a huge franchise, the extras are rather minimal, and the extras are part of the attraction of DVDs.

silveryanenar 03-22-2006 04:19 AM

Wow i can't believe that is only got 3 of 5! I love this movie and i have watched the dvd a bunch of times already. But i do with that it had more extra stuff on it, and the lack of commentary is a bummer

hufflepufffriends 03-22-2006 04:56 AM

3 out of 5?!?!?!??!HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!!That was the best Harry Potter movie yet!!!!!!PEOPLE WHO GRADE THESE THINGS, RECONSIDER!!!!!!!!I'm begging you!!!!!!!!I loved the movie!!!!!!!All of my friends loved it!!!!!One of them owns the DVD and saw it 3 times!!!!!!!How could you give a movie that's like that 3 out of 5 stars?!?!?!?

amberradcliffe 03-22-2006 05:05 AM

If they only gave it 3 out of 5 they must be out of their minds were have they been all this time did they even watch it all the way through? i would have given it a 5 times infinity it was amazing it is the only movie that has ever made me cry, literally balling, i bet they were all guys and just got jelous because when they saw Daniel in the tub they saw that he was better looking that they've ever been in theyr whole life. if there would have been a girl there they probably would of changed their mind and gave it what it deserves a 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perian Frost 03-22-2006 06:16 AM

Okay, again, i feel i have to agree with the critic again! plz don't hurt me! (cowers)

I can't help it!

Losse 03-22-2006 10:00 AM

The part with Moaning Myrtle and the bath was definately not something younger children should watch, but oh well. Personally I'd give the move a 4/5 and the DVD5. Love the collectors edition!

Helen_Godsell06 03-22-2006 05:33 PM

I'm not going to slate the guys at Empire because i'm a regular reader of the mag and i love 'em all! Having said that i am a fair minded person and feel it is only fair that i point out what i feel to be the flaws in their review. Namely that they only gave it 3 stars (when they gave HP1 4 stars - work out the logic in that if you can) and that there comment about Rita Skeeter is i think a bit unfounded since a) she's meant to be anoying, i'd like to meet the person who doesn't find her to be as shiver inducing as nails on a chalkboard, and b) she isn't just J.K's pop at the media (although Rowling probably did get a sense of satisfaction out of writing a character that typified everything she disliked about the press) but actually plays a key part in the book, creating the foundation upon which the Daily Prophet builds their propaganda war against Harry in book 5 and providing Harry with the means to tells his story via Rita's article in the Quibbler.

Take that you ever so witty and talented film critics you!
