Early Order of the Phoenix Movie Preview!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was previewed in Chicago this past weekend with a running time of 2 ½ hours.

*SPOILER WARNING*

Some of the main highlights are:

Quote:

- The Dementors are more skeletal than in PoA
- The Dursleys are in the film for 10-15 mins, then Moody etc come to take Harry to Grimmauld.
- The twins do bust out of Hogwarts like in the book, but they don't cast the swamp spell. "It is one of the more memorable scenes in the movie. Incredible effects."
- Very little foreshadowing between Harry and Ginny - they share a look that book fans will recognize and appreciate.
- Dumbledore's escape was spectacular.
- The Black family tapestry is "lush and detailed" as Sirius explains it to Harry.
- The film centers on Harry and the DA on the whole.
- There aren't any "invented" scenes; it's all from the book.
- Dumbledore was "calm and inventive" during the Voldy battle, which was "great"; no curse whirled Herimone's way.
- On the cinematogrpaphy: "This film feels, cinematically, like a film from the 50's filmed in Cinema-Scope. A wide aspect ratio with tons of shots that have a lot of movement in them. The kind of thing that will be killed in P/S format on television. The scenes with the DA are all wide with few closeups so we can see everyone practicing. The walls are mirrored so it gives you the sense of a dance studio/martial arts training center. It makes for a great visual.
- Ron, Hermione, Luna and Neville are held by Death Eaters during the last battle.
- There is no St. Mungo's
- Sirius has a lot more screen time.
- The DA lessons "begin awkwardly," and are among the most memorable. One particular duel is going to "blow up the forums" (relating to shipping - as Emma Watson has said in the past that at one point she pins Ron against a wall, this is probably that duel).
- Mr. Weasley's attack is in the film.
- Bellatrix is "mean, no doubt, and lets Neville know he's #1 on her list." She doesn't interact with Harry much.
- No Quidditch, and no kiss from Hermione to Ron.
- The twins do sell their wares in the film.
- No Quibbler article, but Luna is reading it in the carriage pulled by the Thestral.
- Moody's broom is supposed to be fun/funny
- The Room of Requirement is discovered by Neville and explained by Hermione. No boggart. Ron never makes the film!Ron scared-face.
- Aunt Petunia's Howler is not in the film.
- The possession of Harry by Voldemort is in the film and supposedly very well acted.
- Lily does not stick up for Snape in the Worst Memory part.
- The "Snape's Worst Memory" scene is "much easier to bear" than in the books; it's not as humiliating in the film. It's 3 or 4 minutes long. No underpants, just hanging in the tree.
- No lion hat on Luna.
- Kreacher is featured and is a big jerk (lol). He's a sinister Dobby.
- Draco isn't in the film much, though he does well when he's there.
- Prefects are not appointed as in the book; the appointments are not mentioned.
- Aberforth is in the film for a quick second as is one of his goats.
- Flitwick is still the "new" Flitwick from movie four.
- No Phineas (though his line is in the Dumbledore escape scene)
- Ginny's patronus seems to be a phoenix; Luna's is a hare. (NOTE: The film people would never make this up; there's a 99% chance this is canon approved by Jo.)
- No Mundungus
- Black family tapestry is enormous
- Cho is the Snitch, but she was Veritaserumed into it. Though Harry gives her a very cold look.
- Cho does not get "sneak" on her face.
- Harry ignores Cho for the whole film after she is the sneak; the whole DA gets detention.
- Harry writes “I must not tell lies” on his hand, and it’s a “brutal scene. The entire D.A. is subjected to this later in the movie, except Cho.
- The worst memory scene is NOT a Pensive scene; it's Harry practicing Occlumency and getting into Snape's mind. Snape stops the lessons because of things.
- The statues don't protect Harry, he is just pinned to the wall.
- DD helps Harry being possessed by reminding him of the differences between him and Voldemort.
- No brain room or locked room, but the Prophecy Room and Veil Room are there; in the veil room, Harry, Luna, Neville (and perhaps Ginny) are drawn to it, and Ron and Hermione aren't.
- The Christmas at Grimmauld is there but brief.

Aww, I was looking forward to seeing Luna's lion hat! And no St. Mungo's, that's a real bummer - but I suppose considering the how long the book is, it sounds like they've done quite well with fitting everything in.

I'm getting more excited about OotP than any of the other movies, and the more I hear, the more I can't wait ^_^

It all sounds excellent! A few minor (okay, MAJOR) changes to different aspects of the plot, but overall it's sounding mighty fine to me! I'm even more eager to see it now...I like the idea of Harry ignoring Cho for the rest of the film and sharing a "look" with Ginny...*squee* And Hermione and Ron in the DA...pinning him against the wall? I can imagine it now...*goes into shipping fangirl mode*

That's not fair. Ron is a MAJOR character! He can't be a minor in this movie!! And ooooh...there are going to be a lot of things that I'm going to be complaining about after I see this movie.

I can't believe this. The things that I read that ARE in the book and movie, I'm glad they're in it. But no brain room?! That sucks!!

And Cho isn't the Snitch in the book!! I think it's Marietta, Cho's friend. That's ridiculous. She can't be the snitch!! She just can't!!!

I read this article just before I got on SS, thank you katiebell, I like your better than the one I read. Now on, I wish they had more Draco, he is kinda important. And I wish Cho was not the sneak, in the book it was her friend. And I really wish Fred and George had made the swamp, that was just great in the book. But all in all it it does sound good, I will see it of course, it's Harry Potter!

I am kind of disapointed because they left out a lot of major scenes that alot of people were ,looking forward to like Ron is Harry'd best friend so he cannot be a minor character thats just craziness. Like no quidditch that is basically the whole reason as to why fred and george leave coz they have nothing left for them at school, and mr weasley does get attacked but there is no st mungos how is he suppose to get treated? that just does not make any sense and the quibbler interview is like the whole basis of the story that makes umbridge hate harry even more, but i am still looking forward to it i hope it is better then the fourth one :)

The one thing i am REALLY REALLY upset about is that Cho is the one that tells about the DA...and i wanted to see the SNEAK written on the other girl's forhead...tee hee...but otherwise i undderstand the cuts and i Hope the Dan did a good job with the scene about Sirius's death...i want to cry when i see it...tee hee

I can't pass judgement yet but there is so much wrong with what I just read that I fear I am going to be disappointed when the movie comes. At least there are no invented scenes. Oh Well I'll just have to wait.

Actually, there was a kiss: The "Good luck, Ron" kiss before the first Quidditch game, remember? A classic scene I was DYING to see, but they yanked it. :arg:

I am thoroughly, genuinely, and sincerely ticked off at the fact that, once again, Ron seems to be lurking in the shadows somewhere while SUPER!hermione gets all the glory. *sigh* I was really hoping that with a new screenwriter, Ron would get some character justice. I know Rupert will be phenominal, and do as much as he can for what he's given, but I'm really sick of Ron getting pushed aside.

I know that I'll love the film because I go in with the thought that it is SEPARATE from the books, but still...when your favorite character loses his essence and ALL of his lines are given to HERMIONE (Think Mudblood in CoS and "IF you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too" from PoA...now it looks as though Hermione ALSO introduces Luna INSTEAD of Ginny...who gets few lines. I guess the screenwriters just don't like the Weasleys much.)

I'm happy with most of it, I suppose, but for some of the things they cut...and changed (like Cho), I don't know. Good to hear that there is at least SOME H/G interaction and R/Hr...even without the kiss. *is bitterly disappointed*

Well i guess you cant have everything i mean think about it if there were a lot from the book the movie would be like 6 hours long but at least the important stuff is added..even though draco deserves more time hehehe but i think the memory part should be like the book cuz snape hanging upside down is classic and you should see lily stick up for him but oh well wat ya gonna do??

WHAT ABOUT SNAPE?

It seems like he is getting glossed over in the films.

He doesn't even have a soundtrack theme. Even Crabbe and Goyle have one!!!

i think i'll like the movie but i'm pretty upset because of what they're leaving out like luna's hat...and ron...but i'm glad sirius gets a lot more time in the movie.

Dangit I wanted to see Snape's graying underpants!!! tee hee...It doesn't sound like they took out as much as I thought they were! YAY:clown: they didn't mention anything about Sirius's mum though!...i wonder if we get to hear her yell all those nasty things...

NO HERMIONE KISS TO RON!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....but i guess that was linked to quidditch...so i can see why it isn't in it...gar...
