Deathly Hallows copies for homeless kids

Jesse Liberty bought two copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows so his children wouldn’t argue over who got to read the book first – not unlike many parents (myself included). But what is unique about Liberty is that he’s also thinking about homeless kids. Those who won’t get a copy of Deathly Hallows … or will they?

Quote:

I was thinking an awful lot of families, like mine, purchased more than one copy ... so our kids could read it at the same time.
So Liberty went to his local library and is working in tandem with them to collect "extra" copies of Deathly Hallows from those who purchased multiple books and he plans to distribute them to a homeless shelter.

Quote:

After (Labor Day) we're going to take (them) to a homeless shelter, or more than one, depending on how many we have, and see if there are some kids who might like their own copies.
Quote:

I know some folks will want to keep both copies, but some folks will say, 'We don't need to have two or three copies in the house.’ Rather than have them toss it, here's an option.
Liberty got the idea to donate the books when he saw people in bookstores buying several copies of the book, just like he did.

Quote:

It seemed like an obvious idea. I have two books and you have none. It seemed like a way to meet a small need in a small way.
Quote:

Really, I focused on homeless kids because they are kids that don't really have anything to hang on to.
Liberty added that he hopes the idea will spread.

Quote:

In my secret fantasy, it goes nationwide, and we start a movement.
Well, I’m moved. And now I know exactly what to do with that extra book I have. ;)

Wow. It seems like the world is falling apart around us and then someone does something as little as this with a dream to someday touch the world.

It's quite moving.

I am very pleased to see that someone is trying to help out the homeless. I think every kid in the world should get the chance to read the last Harry Potter book. But...who in the world would toss out a copy of Deathly Hallows!?

elysianlight 08-11-2007 05:38 PM

Awww, how sweet. Those kids will enjoy it and thank him so much =] Bless him.
