David Yates talks Deathly Hallows to Vanity Fair

David Yates has spoken to Vanity Fair about Deathly Hallows; how the tones of part one and part two differ to Half-Blood Prince, why they split the movie and the new ways in which they are shooting the films.

Quote:

I would imagine, because you are already thinking of Harry in a different way and you are already invested in a different part of the story.

Completely. And the characters are getting older, the actors are getting older, and we leave Hogwarts behind in the next movie. We always say—I did it on [installment] five, I did it on [installment] 6—“Oh these films are growing up. They’re getting darker.” That really does feel the case when you leave the school behind and you are outside in the real world. It’s a very different dynamic. It’s really exciting actually.
Quote:

Why did you and Warners decide to split the last installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two parts?

Three reasons. One is it’s a huge book so there’s so much stuff in it. You go through the list of things you want to put in the movie and there’s so many huge set pieces that by the time you get to the end of it you kind of go, “Whoa this would be the most expensive movie of all time.” Far more expensive than any conventional blockbuster. You have to find a way of somehow keeping all the things you want to do, so it is easy to split it across two films. [Screenwriter] Steve Kloves was working on the adaptation as we were shooting Half-Blood Prince and he just rounded us up and said, “Look guys I am having a real problem stuffing this story into two-and-a-half hours. I think narratively this might suit two parts.” There was that. I get frustrated when fans say, ‘Why didn’t you put this in or put that in?’ So it was a combination of the adaptation process and the fact that I just want to give the audience everything we can from the book, basically.
Quote:

I think you will find the next film quite a departure from the sixth film.

Why?

It’s just edgier. It’s a little rawer. It’s more contemporary. It feels more modern. Shooting in the way we’ve been shooting, doing a lot of hand-held camera work, all that stuff, I’ve never got a call from the studio. They just phone up or email and say we love the dailies even though I am doing things that feel very not Harry Potter. So I feel I have a freedom and the elbowroom to do what I feel the story requires.

Good Interview!

I never think about money when I look at these films, but he’s right the last film would have cost a fortune and if it means they cut back on less its all the better that there are two films.

GinnyW21 07-25-2009 03:00 PM

awesome cant wait for the first part

Erindipity 07-25-2009 03:14 PM

hopefully the film get all the attention it needs!! anxious for the first installment!!

Padfoot7 07-25-2009 04:10 PM

Hm, I never thought of splitting the last film budget wise... I'm fine with it, though. I tmeans Potter doesn't end so soon. :)

And seeing it filmed with hand held cameras, that'll be cool. I guess kind of what they did in HBP during the attack on the Burrow, right?

RemyMoony 07-25-2009 05:15 PM

I'm glad they are splitting it. I'd hate if they had to leave too much out.

Richard_13 07-25-2009 05:49 PM

Awesome!! and I can't wait for the first installment!

louise19 07-25-2009 06:00 PM

cool can not waut for the first part of it

SilverShiner 07-25-2009 06:02 PM

Well thank god he's not cutting out scenes from the book this time. :)

HannahLongbottom 07-25-2009 07:01 PM

It does make much more sense to split it. I can't think of anything that they could cut that wouldn't make a huge difference.

Manal 07-25-2009 07:52 PM

it's good that they are going to split it , if not many we'll miss many stuff from the Book

Patronus Charm 07-25-2009 09:08 PM

good explanation of why they split DH in two...I am glad they are doing it, but his explanation is well reasoned.

Anum 07-25-2009 09:42 PM

i love the fact that they are splitting the film, it means that it won't end right away. I cannot wait for it to come out and I will be terribly sad when they end!

Delis 07-25-2009 10:54 PM

wow David realize what very well in the Half-Blood Prince!!!

Potter for Minister 07-25-2009 11:48 PM

Wait doing stuff that's not Harry Potter, what on earth do you mean by that Yates?

half_blood_prince 07-26-2009 02:33 AM

that makes sense to split it into 2 movies, its better that way. that way hopfully not that much stuff is taken out

I KNOW!! I don't like the sound of that either!! :worried:
But I really didn't like the handheld camera shots Yates did in OOTP. It was ok...
Handheld cameras shouldn't be used unless the director wants to put the audience in the point of view of the actor or in the middle of the action. It's sadly overused... but I suppose it'll suit Deathly Hallows... [:/]
I'm still excited about PART 1!! :D It should be here now! :xd:

That's what I thought. Personally I dont have high hopes for DH after seeing HBP. After OOTP, I had my doubts about Yates but hoped that he had learned from his mistakes in OOTP and though HBP was better, it wasnt really anything compared to the 1st 4 films. I'm excited about DH but I know that it isnt gonna live up to my imagination. Hopefully Yates will prove me wrong.

phoenix_tears 07-26-2009 08:31 AM

I'm so glad they're going to split it into two movies, I hate it when the don't include stuff ..

ivanjovanov 07-26-2009 10:00 AM

I think those were steadycams, which are attached around the waist of the camera person.

Well, Deathly Hallows, by and large, takes place in the muggle world. So you see very little of Hogwarts. Hence, it doesn't feel like 'Harry Potter'. The book was like that too.

Pnedragon 07-26-2009 02:38 PM

I think it was the right decision for Warners to split DH

mommyzama 07-26-2009 02:47 PM

I can't wait. I really hope that they do a great job transforming a great book into two great movies.

fuchen_Slytheringirl 07-26-2009 07:12 PM

WHAT!?!?!?! is he crazy? or he is joking?!OMG! Is this guy called David Yates will be directed in the DH movie???????????? He is an IDIOT, this guy is total MORON! Even though, the original story is too long, you cannot invent things in the movie, David Yates! I think J.K Rowling should slap him across his face hahahahahaha. Do you guys get that?!?! By far, he is a HORRIBLE director for HP movie, he is ruining them! J.K Rowling, please rescue DH movie. And he knew that he is not doing stuff that is not Harry Potter?!?! What the heck is there for then??????????? I think this guy is lost, i really think that he is really lost. This two questions are for you, David Yates: Are you lost David Yates? Or you are just an idiot?
What I know, he is not good for this movie, by far, he is the worst director. How the world they hire this person, are they blind? By far, the Half-Blood Prince was the weakest in the HP movie, i am very disappointing. Please, don't tell me this guy be directing the Deathly Hallow :(

starflight 07-26-2009 07:18 PM

Half Blood Prince tanks in my book

If David Yates was the director of Half Blood Prince --- YUCK! I hope you do a better job sticking to JK Rowling's story than you did in HBP! Adding scenes like the destruction of the Burrows and changing Dumbledore's death scene - big thumbs down to whoever is responsible for that!!! And you didn't even explain why Snape was the half-blood prince, like the book did....left people who hadn't read the book confused and those who love the book, disgruntled. Sorry there won't be a remake any time soon....

possummink 07-26-2009 09:33 PM

I'm glad it's in 2 different movies although the wait between part 1 and part 2 will be hard. I'd love to see as much of the book in the movies as is possible.

Chill. You've clearly misinterpreted what he said. He meant it's not typical 'Harry Potter' fare. Which he's right to say, because it isn't.

He is directing films 7 and 8. Thankfully imo, because I think he's the best they've had.

PadfootAndTheWolf 07-27-2009 02:10 PM

I. CAN'T. WAIT!

darthpotter89 07-27-2009 03:14 PM

im glad they decided to split it into two movies but it's disappointing they did it because of money. i mean can't WB do something for the sake of doing justice to the book?

laura-tonks 08-03-2009 10:43 PM

I think it's a great idea that they've split the films up :D
