David Heyman talks Draco Malfoy's development in Half-Blood Prince

In a new interview with Movie Magic magazine, producer David Heyman spoke about the Harry Potter films, though it should be noted that this is an old interview given that he states the last chapter of the series, Deathly Hallows, had not been announced as being split up into two parts.

David, however, does discuss character development, especially Draco Malfoy's in Half-Blood Prince:

Quote:

MM: Is Yates continuing to push the actors the way that he did in the last film?

David Heyman: A perfect example of that is Tom Felton as Malfoy. I think Tom's always been wonderful, but he's always played it slightly more heightened. He's been the villain, as it were. But in this film, partly because it's in the book, partly because of what we've chosen to emphasize in the script and partly because of what David (Yates) is bringing out as director, it's a much more complex role - and Tom Felton is embracing that. He is the chosen one just like Harry is the chosen one. He's been chosen by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore just as Harry is the "chosen one" and Voldemort is his destiny. Draco is not altogether comfortable with the task he's been given. On the one hand, he's excited about making a name for himself and the import, but he struggles with his conscience and whether it's something he wants or should be doing. And those nuances that Tom is bringing to it are terrific. It feels like a deeper, richer character than we've been able to see to date. So I think David is continuing to deepen the characters. And the comedy is really very human; the awkwardness of romance; how people are brought apart and brought together is done in a very real but very funny way. I think he's doing a wonderful job. Listen, I'm very excited about this film. We presented a 20-minute reel to the studio yesterday and they seemed very pleased - but let's not kid ourselves, what are they going to say? "We're in real trouble here!"?

great to get some HBP news!

I think everyone was hoping to see some more depth of character (found in the books) brought to the movies. Draco really struggles with his burden in HBP (in stark comparison to how Harry responds) and Tom sounds like he is more than up to the challenge of bringing this to the movie.

BlackVenom 05-13-2008 05:01 PM

Hmmm...I don't know but I'm not positive about this film...

cake.ninjak 05-13-2008 05:09 PM

At least they're keeping this. It pleases me. =3

RedheadQueen 05-13-2008 05:12 PM

as excited as I am about all this news coming out, it makes me a little apprehensive about the movie. I keep saying it will be ok, the kids are GREAT, but they can only do so much!!!

(things were a little better before I read all the books, and didn't know what I was missing!!)

HP&GW88 05-13-2008 05:14 PM

sounds like Tom really has to step it up in this film. I'm excited to see it.

laura-tonks 05-13-2008 05:29 PM

HOORAY! HBP NEWS!
this sounds really interesting:D

Patronus Charm 05-13-2008 05:36 PM

Tom's face will get a cramp from all the Draco smirking he will have to do. The movies will be good. Be positive, people!!!!

Hollister 05-13-2008 05:42 PM

Yey!
They're not cutting Tom's scenes :woot:

Well, that's what it implies ;)

HarryThePotter 05-13-2008 05:47 PM

Yay! Finally some news.

I'm so excitet!

FoxFire 05-13-2008 05:57 PM

asyluminmate#7734 05-13-2008 06:04 PM

It's about time Tom is getting the limelight in this upcoming, promising film.

Hermione67 05-13-2008 06:41 PM

I am glad to see updates on the film and the stars. I enjoy Draco as a character and Tom is a great actor, wonder if we'll see him in other films besides HP. Great Job Tom, keep up the great work.

Godfrey Peverell 05-13-2008 06:50 PM

So glad to hear this, I was hoping for this very thing to happen...

Mrs Felton 05-13-2008 07:12 PM

Sounds like Tom has a bigger part in this film, at least I hope so.

Samira 05-13-2008 07:40 PM

Oh..... Finally some news on Draco..... I guess Draco n Harry both will play an equally importanant role in this part of the book!
Can't wait to see it!

ArianaRadcliffe010 05-13-2008 07:45 PM

I'm really looking forward seeing malfoy's character develop in this new movie. I'm so excited for this movie.

hpfan5 05-13-2008 07:47 PM

im glad about the news on draco, he seemed to be less of a villain in the other movies and just there to look scared when the others yelled at him. actually in the first and second movies he was really good.

Eclipsed 05-13-2008 07:52 PM

Yay, I'm really pleased to hear that they're developing Draco's character this far.

Evangeline 05-13-2008 07:55 PM

Sounds really interesting ;P

Hermionespell 05-13-2008 08:05 PM

BreBear 05-13-2008 08:51 PM

Great to get some positive feedback, since most of the news lately has been resulting in everyone getting so upset. :)

Little Trooper 05-13-2008 08:59 PM

Thats awseome. Glad to be getting some news about HBP.

asyluminmate#7734 05-13-2008 09:00 PM

GlamofTheDead 05-13-2008 10:02 PM

its great Tom's taking on such a big role. i cant wait for this movie

ladycplum 05-13-2008 10:03 PM

Wow, you mean they left Draco in? I thought he was going to be cut and all of his story and character function handed off to some other character of no consequence :mwaha: Sorry, that seems to be the company line with WB these days. Nice to hear something positive for a change. :)

Maxilocks 05-13-2008 10:32 PM

It'll be good to see Draco develop - the films need it.

hpnaiv 05-13-2008 10:38 PM

Wow, I almost forgot that Draco plays a huge part in HBP. And I also almost forgot we're going to see a lot more of Tom then. ;] Well, that's good because Tom's good looking. Haha. xD

Shopgirl3876 05-13-2008 10:41 PM

At least Draco will have some movie time..........then Harry can get him! hahaha j/k

Paint.the.Limelight 05-13-2008 10:46 PM

This movie is going 2 be really complex. In more ways then one. I get more & more excited with each new update :D

Si 05-13-2008 11:24 PM

I'm excited they're actually keeping the Draco scenes in HBP. About time we got to see more Tom in the HP films but then again Draco is a major part of the main plot in HBP. I'm excited to see how he does with the larger role this time around.

Riddikulus! 05-14-2008 12:15 AM

Excellent Interview!
Just Reading It makes me excited!!!!!!!!!

Mrs_ronald_weasley 05-14-2008 01:08 AM

HARRY LOVER#1 =) 05-14-2008 03:36 AM

Its wonderful that they decided to put more Malfoy in the movie because I has not seen him in the last four!
I hope that Tom Felton could portray that kind of character!

Ginny GL 05-14-2008 04:31 AM

I know Tom is a great actor.

What worries me is the trims and add-ons all over the story.

half_blood_prince 05-14-2008 04:45 AM

elmo_the_emo 05-14-2008 05:11 AM

That would be very difficult, seeing as Draco is actually the one who orchestrates a lot of what happens in the story

They have.

h/g ship lover 05-14-2008 12:57 PM

Wicked. I can't wait! xD :r/hr:

Liisa 05-14-2008 01:07 PM

I'm so glad to hear that Draco has a more significant role in HBP. He is my daughter's favorite character and he's hardly in any of the movies. Whoo Hoo!

RemusBlack 05-14-2008 02:45 PM

Tom's awesome, but am I the only person who is worried about the film being comical? When I read the book, it was the most scary and saddest of all.

the bright light 05-14-2008 03:13 PM

I'm looking forward to seeing what Tom can come up with in this film. its looking good ;)

Dobby's_Dad 05-14-2008 04:22 PM

It's great that we are talking about HBP. Since they started talking about DH being a 2 part film people have seemed to forgotten that HBP is on the way!

Actually I was kind of taking the mickey out of you on that one, precious. :gollum2: You DO tend to say, whenever a character is cut or their part is shrunk to a few minutes on screen from a few hundred pages in the book, that whatever plot point or storyline they were handling can be given to someone else or taken out all together. :mwaha:

I have to agree with you there. I too am a little apprehensive about the movie. All the news we have been given about the movie makes me think that they are steering to far away from the book.

K33P0NR0CK1N 05-15-2008 01:59 AM

Awesome! :D
It sounds like Tom is doing a fantabulous job at representing this more complex Draco. I can't wait to see it on screen.

Applehands 05-15-2008 04:11 AM

I'm an eternal optimist :)

But Draco is central. His story directly contributes to the main narrative and we finally get to see something three-dimensional from him.

I think, because in some ways HBP had the darkest elements of the series (Horcruxes, Dumbledore's death, attacks on students etc...), there needs to be some comedy to balance it out. Which is where the romance came in, it provided a bit of light relief and allowed Jo to develop the R/Hr ship.

Double_Trouble 05-15-2008 10:44 PM

I'm excited to see Tom in this one..!

XRedSakuraX 05-16-2008 05:40 PM

Quidditch Seeker 05-20-2008 06:50 PM

Draco is a villain through and through - thought it was hilarious when he was attacked by Buckbeak!
