Dan Radcliffe talks Deathly Hallows (spoilers!)

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly Dan Radcliffe talks about Deathly Hallows - how long it took him to read it, what surprised & shocked him the most, the flaws of characters, the closure the book gave, characters that survive and what he did when he finished.

SPOILER!!: What surprised or shocked you the most?

Dobby's death. He's always been a comic character, in some ways. And that's what makes it so powerful, I suppose. I'm sure Jo's had that planned for a very long time. That was one of the bits that made me surprised. One of my other theories had been that Snape would end up being a sort of tragic hero, and so I was pleased to see that one in fact come through. That [idea] was given to me by a guy interviewing me, a while ago. He said he thought that would be the case. And I thought, Oh, that's very good.

SPOILER!!: In a way, Harry...
actually does die, because he believes he's going to die. There's a profoundly, existentially lonely passage in the chapter when he prepares to let himself be killed.

In a way, the time between Harry learning he has to die and actually dying —

Or believing he's dying...
That time wasn't short enough to be painless. But it wasn't long enough for him to find complete acceptance within it either. He struggles to find acceptance. Ultimately, he finds a sort of acceptance. But he's not necessarily reconciled with the idea of it. He knows he has to do it, but he's still scared. I just can't wait to be able to film it. I think Jo has given me, once again, an amazing opportunity to step up. So hopefully I'll be able to.

The entire interview can be read here and here.

elysianlight 07-28-2007 12:50 PM

Yeah, totally shocked about the surprise one. That's sometimes why I hate the book too. Too many deaths =(

Great....I liked what he said about it.

TonksNymphadora 07-28-2007 02:44 PM

That was a great interview. I love the part where he says he wrote down the time and day he started reading it....I wrote down when I finished on the back....lol
Not that I'll ever forget where I was and how I felt at the end of the book but it just seemed important.

c00kie 07-28-2007 02:45 PM

Nice interview, i can't wait to see it DH on film too. ;)

That was the part of the interview that I really liked. It does seem to take a while doesn't it.

Christian 07-28-2007 03:08 PM

Great interview!

thesutherlande 07-28-2007 03:09 PM

[That person's] death totally went over my head. I read it and I just thought, "...oh." I didn't expect it but I wasn't particularly shocked either...

One thing that made me laugh (and I'm sorry) was [the very first person/creature] dying because it was so out of the blue and I hadn't spoken to one person who (seriously, at least) thought that he/she would die when speculating deaths. Ha. But it was sad, too...
If you know who I'm talking about @_@

:lupin: <--- argggghghhH! >.<

griffin_girl 07-28-2007 03:12 PM

I agree with that first bit up there!

laudienne 07-28-2007 03:22 PM

I agree with Dan about that first thing - it was so unexpected, because he/she/it is such a sweet, unassuming, loyal character. I suppose those are the kinds of characters that are targeted, but it was still sad to lose him/her/it {I'm trying to keep this spoiler-free as much as I can, lol}. That was one of the parts that made me cry the most, lol. :(

Thanks for the interview!

Melted 4 HP 07-28-2007 04:11 PM

wow, hes really just like the rest of us.

except for the fact that while he reads hes thinking, "i'm going to do this, this is me"

lol

Ginny GL 07-28-2007 04:52 PM

The borrowed book was so funny!

harrypotterbabe 07-28-2007 05:02 PM

Aww i felt the same way about those two characters haha.
I kinda hoped that would happen with the second character two.
hehe very nice interview.

Nightingale 07-28-2007 05:58 PM

Cool. I was wondering what he thought about the end of the book.

Wolf Girl 07-28-2007 06:04 PM

That is so cool. I can't wait until the movie comes out, it'll be great!

I wonder what Rupert and Emma thought about it....

Lissy Longbottom 07-28-2007 07:20 PM

Cool interview

hpluvr037 07-28-2007 07:26 PM

Ooo, I like what he says about the forest scene! I agree with his assessment about the emotional acceptance.

Chocolate Frog 07-28-2007 08:42 PM

Awesome interview

Keith_Urban_Owns 07-28-2007 09:24 PM

WhizzyBubbles 07-28-2007 11:38 PM

The film will be AWESOME!

I got a bit confused though in the part where it doesnt actually work ... why?

lyra_eve 07-29-2007 02:06 AM

This was really good. I wanted to what he thought about Harry's fate. The character has been with him so long an is obviously a huge part of his life.

hermione+ron=love 07-29-2007 12:32 PM

I Think The Same About Dobby Dying Its Sad As He Was Really Brave And He Made A Huge Difference To The Plot.

SMalfoy 07-29-2007 09:24 PM

dobby appeared in a chapter died in the next!! I just couldnt understand what hit me!!

MizFit_of_Society 07-29-2007 10:22 PM

I was a bit shocked myself.

*LYNN* 07-29-2007 10:39 PM

great interview!

coolgirl05 07-29-2007 11:31 PM

nice interview
:)

dan'sgirl4ever 07-30-2007 03:52 AM

I felt the exact same way as he did about shocking things and so forth. And, when I finished, it took me a while to let it sink in and realize that it's over. No more adventures with Harry. It's actually a bit more difficult to say good-bye than I had ever imagined it would be...

LuvRac 07-30-2007 07:48 AM

yes, im still in grief with deaths.... great interview, great man Dan...

Eclipsed 07-30-2007 07:53 AM

I understand what he said about Dobby's death. I hadn't been expecting it at all. But it was obvious she'd been planning it for a long time the way she expressed Harry's feelings about his death.

jkrsong96 07-30-2007 08:39 AM

Wow, that's an another theory that's different. Dobby's death was very painful to me...which is why I can understand this.

XxTarnishedAngelxX 07-30-2007 09:44 AM

Nice interview. Dobby's death was sad. Great book, I "demolished" it so to speak too. Took me 15 hours, couldnt put it down.

irishbreezeie 07-30-2007 10:25 AM

I was to shocked about that death and all the other and im glad he will step up his acting for the last one not that he needs to but for the challange for himself

Supernova 07-30-2007 11:50 AM

GOSH, he really wanted Harry to die didnt he.

bitsyandtank 07-30-2007 01:27 PM

 I still can't believe that one of my fave charries is gone. I am glad that I was right about the one being on Harry's side.

phoenix_feather 07-30-2007 02:29 PM

i <3 dan

HP Girl22 07-31-2007 09:58 PM

this book was blow after blow for me. i agree w/ some of the things he said though

Krissy Moon 07-31-2007 11:11 PM

oh I love Dan all the more now.

Angel0425inAlaska 08-01-2007 12:42 AM

Well Said Daniel!!

I couldn't agree with him more! What he said about finishing the book, how he wasn't sure what else to do, I totally agree with him! And it absolutely stays with you for quite a while. I still think about it all the time! I'm so glad the way J.K. Rowling finished this series :-) I can't wait to pass it along to my children when they are old enough!

EstherGreenwood 08-01-2007 02:58 PM

Good to know he doesn't face HP as just work and a movie to be made and actually connects the facts and had theories of his own. This thought occured to me when he says he remembered that bit from the fourth book.

Mari of the Ocean 08-02-2007 06:08 AM

nice interview!!!

xxALEISHAxx 08-09-2007 11:41 AM

I agree with everything that he said, very well put!

Hermionespell 08-09-2007 08:13 PM
