Cast & crew talk Half-Blood Prince + new photo

Actors Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, along with producers David Heyman, David Barron, director David Yates, and screenwriter Steve Kloves were interviewed about bringing the sixth film, Half-Blood Prince, to life and how they readied themselves for the feature. Attached is a new photo of Harry in the boys' dorm; the article can be read below:

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” not only represents a new chapter in the lives of Harry and his friends and foes, it is one that blends humor and heartbreak, romance and redemption, and the past and the present as never before. And in the wake of Lord Voldemort’s return, the choice between good and evil has never had more serious ramifications.

Heyman offers, “One of the central themes in the Harry Potter books is the choices we make are what ultimately define us. It’s also something we have explored and will continue to explore in the films. Each of the books, as well as the respective films, chronicles a different year in Harry’s life, and the sixth installment is no exception. In the last film, we were watching Harry at a difficult stage—tormented by dreams, questioning himself and beset by personal demons. Now he’s a year older and that brings a different set of issues and responsibilities.”

“For me, the films have always been about a loss of innocence,” says Daniel Radcliffe, the actor behind the title character, who can perhaps no longer be called the boy wizard. “When Harry came into this world, it was all just amazing and brilliant and kind of pure. But as the films have gone on, that’s totally disintegrated, and he’s realizing that the wizarding world has just as many, if not more, challenges than the world he grew up in before.”

However, there are some challenges shared by teenagers in both worlds, whether wizard or Muggle. Producer David Barron acknowledges that there is no magic spell to evade the perils of adolescence, noting, “Romantic entanglements are never easy, at whatever age we are, but in adolescence they can be particularly difficult. I think Jo (J.K. Rowling) captured that wonderfully in the book and our remarkable director, David Yates, and our talented cast have brought it beautifully to the screen with both heart and humor.”

Heyman states, “Jo gave us the gift of these magnificent books and every one is a jewel. Her imagination never ceases to amaze me. Each Harry Potter book brings us new challenges and new opportunities, so coming into this movie, we were as excited as ever.”

Director David Yates had entered the world of Harry Potter with “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” the fifth film in the series. “I had such a great experience on the last film and was thrilled to be asked back,” he says. “I loved the sixth book. It is hugely entertaining, bringing more romance to Hogwarts than we’ve ever seen before combined with an intriguing uncovering of Voldemort’s past that has huge implications for the rest of the series.

“Another year brings up another set of challenges for Harry, Ron and Hermione, and the older they get the more complex they become,” Yates continues. “I really enjoyed exploring deeper aspects of the characters further with Dan, Rupert (Grint) and Emma (Watson). They are really keen to push and be pushed in their roles because we all want these characters to grow and develop both with the unfolding stories and the audience.”

The cast has equal praise for their director. “David is a joy to work with,” says Radcliffe. “I always looked forward to seeing him on the set because he has so much energy and enthusiasm, which is fantastic.”

Rupert Grint, who plays the role of Harry’s best friend, Ron Weasley, adds, “We all got on really well with David, so we were pleased he was coming back. Going through the script, he really listened to what we had to say about our characters, but he also offered a lot of help and guidance.”

Having scripted the first four Harry Potter films, Steve Kloves returned to the franchise to write the screenplay for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Heyman comments, “In this film, more than in the previous ones, there were a number of narrative threads to follow, so that was one of the great challenges. We were blessed to have another wonderful screenplay from Steve Kloves, who wove them all together brilliantly. And David Yates really made them gel. He is a formidable director. Apart from telling a good story, the humanity of the characters is so important to him and he continues to draw out new sides of our actors that even I had never seen before.”
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be released July 15, 2009; tickets are on sale now!

Why I oughta...

>Heyman comments, “In this film, more than in the previous ones, there were > number of narrative threads to follow, so that was one of the great >challenges. We were blessed to have another wonderful screenplay from >Steve Kloves, who wove them all together brilliantly.

*Desperately biting her tongue to stop from going off on yet another thread about how many branches were chopped unceremoniously from the tree without rhyme or reason*

>And David Yates really made them gel. He is a formidable director.

Which isn't always a good thing, of course. <_<

>he continues to draw out new sides of our actors that even I had never >seen before.”

Yeah, Hermione has become Herwhiney, Ron has been reduced from a 3-dimensional character to a comedy caricature, and Harry, as we've seen in the NOT funny library moment with Hermajesty and Romilda, has turned into exactly what Snape thinks he is, someone who believes his own press and loves every minutes of it! :hack: :smash: This movie is going to go down the :toilet: I just know it. From an artistic standpoint anyway. There's nothing left to distinguish the Potter films from any other churned out carbon copy Twlight/Narnia movies. And I don't care how many people call me cynical or whatever, the heart and soul has been ripped out of these books for a long time.

Ladycplum, I think you may be exaggerating things a little, tiny bit. Those are your opinions, and you want to share them. Which is good. But, chill. Let's not be over dramatic.

I'm not being overdramatic, I just think they're shooting for style over substance, which is not good when you're dealing with a set of novels as rich and well thought out as these are.

Okay, lets just take a moment to calm down girl.

Im a little scared about being disappointed myself...Its just to me every scene is important in HBP and to read about anything getting cut scares me. Simply because HBP and DH are the climax to the whole series...and I want them to be perfect. Althought im sure everyone's done their best with budget, time, and deadlines being major issues.

I think we should give it a chance, though. We'll all watch HBP at our respective theaters and then come here to SS and discuss it. Good or bad.

ladycplum - I agree with everything you say!

After the film of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the audience reacted very positively to Ron. A best friend, who had a great family and was loyal and funny. However, instead of WB seeing it as an opportunity to attract twice as many fans, they thought he was a threat to Harry! Therefore, since Prisoner of Azkaban, he's been systematically downgraded and made into a caricature for people to laugh at, not with. His cringing throughout Chamber was too similar to McCauley Culkin to lay the blame anywhere but at Columbus' door - especially as Kloves has admitted Columbus insisted on that clapping, cheering ending to Chamber which was so over the top.

The out of character Hermione is because WB wanted to attract the Disney crowd. Hermione was written (certainly in the earlier books) as being closer to Velma from Scooby Doo, rather than Daphne. Yet WB turned her into Hermione Cyrus, in order to attract Tweens. This is a large group of fans who are frequently unruly - where do they get off attacking Rob Pattinson in the street?! I know nothing about Twilight, but maintain some self-respect girls (and women) and leave Cedric alone!

Sadly, they didn't understand that this group may be the loudest, but they're not the largest. There are lots of people who don't post on websites, who prefer the characters and plot as JKR wrote them. Mostly because she's a creative author. I'm no Kloves fan, but believe his average, but accurate first drafts were then amended to nonsense by various Hollywood types trying to tone down Ron, target Disney fans, and make Hogwarts as similar to US High Schools as possible. Sadly they lacked the storytelling ability necessary to make such changes. The Yule Ball was just another prom, the dress robes just tuxedos and the differences that make JKR's original vision throughout the series have been frequently been thrown out to make money/save time. They didn't understand that the things that were different were what attracted lots of fans - they wanted to escape to another world.

The films were wildly successful it's true, but how could they not be with the books being released at the same time and giving the films publicity beyond anything WB's distribution wing could dream of? I still think they could have been far more successful artistically, while earning at least as much money. Prisoner of Azkaban, the film that introduced normal clothes 90% of the time and butchered characters, remains the least successful of all those released. NOT because of a reaction to Chamber of Secrets, because it had a massively sucessful opening weekend. It was the repeat viewings that dropped.

I'll see HBP, but a lack of respect for WB's decisions and an awareness that the Director and Producers have to accept Hollywood interference (the film makers lack the influence someone like Stephen Spielberg has in his films) means that my expectations are low. I'd never expect a film to be as good as the book, but that aside, the series has never reached the heights that it easily could have, considering the source material.

soo close...sooooo close

and Hermione closer to Velma than Daphne...just a funny comment in the midst of that interview

I have to say that I totally agree with you both. HBP is my favourite book so while I'm excited about going to see the film, it is mainly because I'm going with friends I don't get to see very often. Kloves may not be great at defending his adaptations, but he is infinately preferable to Goldenberg who seemly to simply scrape the surface details off OOTP, threw in some cringworthy mistakes (joining the Inquisitorial Squad for extra credit? In Britian??) and further mashed the 'minor' characters, leaving Ginny in particular with nothing to say.

The trick perhaps is to try and view the films as an interpretation of the books, as they are never going to match up.
